The name Yoruba or Yariba or Yooba etc, has no literal meaning in our dialect, simply because it is allegedly a term by which the Hausas refers to the peoples of the South West. As narrated by Dr. Bunmi, there appears not to be a singular or homogenous name by which the Yoruba peoples refers to themselves. In Nigeria, the traditional Yoruba man calls himself, #Omoluabi, in Benin-Dahomey, they call themselves #Anago, in Togo, they are referred to as the #Evwe or #Ewe and in Ghana, they are called the #Ga peoples. However, the name #Yariba stuck on us, because of the records of the Arabic description, using the Hausa term to describe us and the British, not being able, as usual to pronounce African names appropriately, colloquially spell & pronounce it as #Yoruba.
I think that the shape of the nose on the Benin bronze sculptures can identify where some diasporians came from. My father's family has that nose and George Floyd also had it.
Oduduwa is a title and not the singular name of a person. The first Oduduwa, mentioned in the oral tradition of creation of the Yoruba people, is a primordial being, expressly different to the Oduduwa that was the father of the first Ooni. Most people erroneously refer to the 7th Century Ooni as the founder and creator of Ile-Ife, but that is entirely false, as Ile-Ife is the cradle of civilization, according to recent DNA traces, that places Ife as the birthplace of the oldest humans on earth, using analysis of over 3600 samples, across the 7 continents of the world.
The Yoruba's STORY OF creation is awesome but one thing that have me thinking is how and where the Older brother found palm wine? If the hearth was only ocupied by water. Before the younger brother create or separate water from the sky.
antigana da silva : The same way in Christianity and in other religions stories of creation. In the Bible Genesis 4 - 16. God created Adam and Eve, they bore 2 sons Cain and Abel. Cain killed Abel and went out from the Lord's presence to live in the land of Nod where he took a wife and bore a son Enoch. Adam and Eve went on to have another son called Seth. The question is where did the people of Nod came from? Or who created his wife. The same mystery as in Yoruba oratory account of creation.

Ile Ife has been in existence before oduduwa. All Yoruba trace back their origin to Ife . So the first oba of Benin was the grandson of oduduwa and son of alafin
The awori are Yoruba and trace their lineage back to Ife. The father of awori is a son of oduduwa who left Ile Ife to the present day Lagos and Ogun state. Benin conquer awori but awori are never Benin
The founding of Ife is complex because it’s a lie. First, you said Ife was founded in the 4th century BC, but we all know including the Yorubas themselves that Oduduwa came to Ife and founded the Yoruba race in the 11th century. So, who were the people there before? Because the Yorubas keep saying that Oduduwa is their founder, that will make the Yorubas only about a thousand year old people. This is the major problem with Yoruba history. First the Yorubas have to come together and come up with a better and more believable origin story. Until then, anybody that try to explain their origin will just be spinning their wheels. Madam, the Edos and Yorubas have no common history or origin. Our(the Edos) monarchy and the Yoruba monarchy does have similar ancestry because Izoduwa founded all the monarchy in Yoruba land. At the time Izoduwa went to Ife, Edo was already 1300yrs old.
