      well the main purpose of the prison is to isolate these dangerous people from the regular folk it isnt to make them have a horrible life, or at least thats what it should be, the punishment of not being able to go wherever and being stuck in one place for years on end is enough for even some of the worse people, the least they can do is let them eat good and learn to be apart of the normal society

      @slendydie1267 3 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      It's quite obvious what they are trying to do but i dont think its a good idea. Your daughter gets murdered and the lad that did it lives a more peaceful life than you. While you're worrying about funerals and such the murderer is just getting fed good and plays sports every day. And some criminals would commit a crime just to go back in which also isn't good. You have to make prison a misery something dreadful so that someone that has been there would think twice before doing something illegal

    • @meghaha8966
      @meghaha8966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      @@slendydie1267 they base it off of the likelyhood of rehabilitation & repeating the crime. Prisoners in countries with more ethical systems where the prisoners are well fed & have okay living conditions are less likely to repeat the crime. When people first hear about that they often think it’s counterintuitive but it’s very well thought out (prisoners are also usually in contact with psychologists and psychiatrists in those countries which decreases the chances of them repeating the crime as well).
      Of course when your kid gets killed it’s one of the most unbearable things ever, but you also have to think about the fact that people in those countries often do understand why the prisons are the way they are. If it means another kid won’t get killed, it’s worth it in the end. The only other way out with the logic of decreasing the chances of them repeating the crime is the death sentence. There’s the other ethical dilemma of “does one murder justify another murder?”, and most people in the uk oppose it i’m assuming. We don’t live in the us hahaha

    I think a prison should aim to deter criminals from crime and reform the prisoners. We can clearly see the reform rates are higher in countries such as Germany who are less strict since they are turning the prisoners into better people and allowing them grow and learn. Whereas in many western countries they use harsher punishments and the reform rates are much lower which speaks volumes. I think the way Germany are going about it is fair and makes sense.

    13:50 thats the problem with punishment vs rehabilitation. Yeah, someone wrongs you then you want to see them punished, but if the result of that is they leave prison and just do it again then all that is happening is the creation of more victims. Those people will probably also go on to have children, and raise them in a way that they also go on to commit these crimes. The only way to break the cycle is to educate and show people a viable alternative path, and also properly support those in poverty. Yes it will mean for a period that criminals might be perceived to be having lesser punishments, but like in Norway, a reoffending rate of 16%? That can only be a good thing. It is enough to break the cycle. Its a no brainer.

    13:45 See the thing is that something causes to commit people crimes, and I agree anyone would be mad if a person who committed a crime towards you or your loved ones. But one thing is we have to thing bigger here, if we give them hell in prison, they will give hell to other people as well when they get out, so to prevent this prisons should not be hell.
