- This is the dragon's lair under Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Paris - the dragon shows her teeth (and roar) at regular intervals, but is always moving her tail and talons. Also includes a look at the beautiful Castle exterior.

The fact that imagineers have made something as majestic and terrifying as this makes me even sadder that beastly kingdom doesnt exist
I'm still mad at Disney for that.

Maybe they can turn the abandoned river boat ride into beastly kingdom that way they can see dragons, unicorns, griffins, krakens and much more as they hoped they would in the first place
Don't be fooled. In real life this dragon is much more realistic and scarier. I still get scared approaching it and I'm 21! My first experience with it was when I was 8 and I straight up cried the whole time 😂

Fun fact: This dragon is NOT meant to be Maleficent. According to the backstory of the attraction, the dragon (who happens to be male) was adopted by Merlin when it was still an egg to guard his magic shop.
the one thing that would make everything much better is if american DLR recreated this same dragon but made it into maleficent herself to fit with the theming

Personally, I enjoy the story with Merlin adopting the dragon more.

I got to meet Terri Harden, the Disney imagineer who got design and create this attraction. Insane amount of detail and devotion to her work, when she was describing it I had to go online and check it out.

ye, i remember when i was a kid and went there and i was terrified of that dragon
Its was black before tho
They built around her because she refused to move.
Allegedly in the beginning, the dragon also breathed fire at the guests when it woke up. Sadly that feature got removed for safety reasons soon after.
Looking this up on a whim, I found out it was designed by a person named Terri Hardin. I looked her up, and found out that she’s designed an astounding amount of amazing puppets and effects. The stillsuits in Dune, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (and other Ghostbuster puppets), the Flintstones movie, Captain EO… that’s just a fraction of what she’s done.
She also designed a ton of iconic Disneyland costumes and ride characters. It’s hard to believe one person could accomplish so much.
I remember when I was younger my dad took me down here and told me that this dragon ate children for his dinner and I was next 😂

the design and movement on this thing are absolutely gorgeous, it's a lot more lifelike than you'd expect! i feel like i'd be terrified being in the same room as this dragon but watching it from a safe distance i'm mesmerized 😍

I dig how you slowly walked down the tunnel. It gave it some ominousness. Maybe I've watched too much "Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter?" The dragon looks fantastic!
This is super awesome!! But it doesn't move his tail. It would be great to splash his tail in the water.

Josh Dohme well, it isn't specifically stated that it's maleficent. While it IS sleeping beauty's castle, the dragon has no resemblance to maleficent's dragon form. Even with the horns on the sign in the front.

When I was little I used to stand there, waiting for the dragon to roar for hours. I can’t wait to spend my time staring at a dragon animatronic all day.
I saw this as a kid in my only visit to Disneyland and LOVED it! This guy's been in my memories ever since and it's still in my memory to this day and I know deep down, I'm gonna have a new encounter with this magnificent predator.

I wouldn't say Frozen is old, maybe stale at this point. Don't get me wrong, Frozen wasn't a bad movie and the music IS good (with the exception of "Fixer Upper") but the way it's being shoved down our throats in the parks is ridiculous and has made a lot of people sick of it.
I remember going here but the gate was closed but there was a jewelry shop inside the castle and behind it a small door, and the curious little me went back there and saw it and shitted himself went back out quicker then i got in lmao

Weird childhood storytime: my parents took us for a holiday to Disneyland when I was 4, and I became absolutely enamoured with this dragon. For the duration of the trip, first thing I wanted to do was go say good morning to my dragon friend, and before the park closed I had to go say good night. Last thing I did when we left was go say goodbye, and I bawled my eyes out, promising I would never forget my friend and I would come back one day. The dragon/Maleficent became my imaginery friend for the rest of my childhood.
I'm uncertain if my dragon phase predated this event or if this is what kickstarted it, but surprising no one, I grew up to be a ridiculously huge fantasy nerd.
(Also yes, I have been to Disneyland two times since, and I have indeed always made sure to pop by and say hi)

I lived in fr and visited the dragon frequently because i loved him so much as a kid🥰 he was very scary though and i would always dash out whenever he begun moving when i was little 🤣 I would wait for my father to give me the go ahead that he was back to sleep and i could come back and admire him again 😅

First time I saw this as a kid the park was still called "Euro Disney" It's still so impressive all these years later the imagineers can make anything come true
This being near Sleeping Beauty Castle got me thinking- what if that’s Maleficent, trapped in a smaller dragon form and still healing from the battle against Phillip and the many other good forces she’s failed to destroy?
When i was there, in 1994, the Dragon was black. I have two photos from that time in not so good quality. I have a big fear about animatronics. I was not on the Nautilus.
I was there in 2007 and it was black. It's black in the movie.
I knew I didn't just dream that! I must have been around 10 when my family first went there in the 90s, and I'm sure it was darker in the cave with a black dragon! (It seemed bigger, too, but that was probably just because I was a fairly short kid) I think my parents still have an old and grainy photo somewhere...

Cool dragon, but the greatest animatronic dragon is none other then Vermithrax Pejorative, from a movie from the 80's called: "DragonSlayer"
I honestly tried to stay quiet when I saw this dragon so I didnt wake it up when I was a kid.

Fantasy is slowly coming to life I hope in 50 years we can build a place like Westworld but instead of Western it's fantasy and we can build host dragons. Host means robot by the way in the westworld show.

It used too! It was stopped bc it was too scary for guests and was causing problems ie heart/panic attacks and some good old code 2’s, was changed to breathing smoke for awhile and the actions were slowed so that it spent more of its time resting than awake and moving to scare guests. Eventually it finally blew its last plume of smoke and was stopped due to actual health hazards this time(asthma) and was slowed even more. I hope that one day the dragon gets revitalized and will be displayed in its full fire breathing radiance!

I miss the smoke and dark lighting. Don't get me wrong, it's an impressive animatronic but I think it lost some of its bite.

Because it's not. The backstory for this attraction is that this is a dragon adopted by Merlin when it was an egg to guard his magic shop. My guess is that the dragon is meant to guard the shop from Madam Mim (and my head canon is that Arthur also helped Merlin to train and take care of him).
