A great video! Thank you! I love Solvang but I've never been to Denmark and I always wondered what the Danish people felt about the town. This was very insightful
He says, he's visiting Denmark from time to time, and then proceeds to talk about "giving the house snow, so it looks like we've been up in the mountains". Does this guy even know Denmark?
The baker claiming to be more danish than in Denmark is probably right. My grandfather who was a baker often complained that the pastries were more and more about profits than the craftmanship
More danish than Denmark i taking it a bit far. But it obviously represents danish traditions as they were at a certain time in history. Of course Denmark is no longer that way as traditions progress in the native land, whereas the point in Solvang seems to be to keep those exact traditions alive and not let them transform. Being from Denmark, I will definitely give Solvang a visit when I come to CA. If nothing else it sure looks hyggeligt.
I subscribed too you søren. it's a fun idea you've got. and a good project. i didn't know that there was an "All Danish City" or "Village" you might say. kudos to the translater she did a great job. keep up the great work. and i hope once i grow up i could visit California. Especially San Francisco, but Solvang is a good option too :-) the reason why i speak/write english is so "everybody"can understand me even though i'm Danish.
Solvang has definitely got a place on my to visit list, looks amazing and seem to have captured a good deal of the Danish spirit, except for parenting. A few things strike me though, Smorgasbord? That's the Swedish equivalent of "Det kolde bord" in Danish (Buffet with cold dishes, usually eaten with and on lots of ryebread). We still got all the bakery, round one is a spandauer, hanekam is a simple wienerbrød. Also it's a shame to use those American icecream cones, instead of Danish ones.
He is Danish Nikolaj. But here we have snow up in the mountains. That's what he was talking about. We are all aware that there are no mountains in Denmark.
MissOrtvald, it is very hyggeligt and of course not more danish than Denmark ;) But I think it's safe to say that some old Danish traditions are being kept in Solvang that does not exist any longer in Denmark. Maybe some pastries and one of them?
Hi a Dane here, Great Video found it very personal, thats great. I totally agree that the bakery that went out of production was great, cant remember its name, i think the reason why some things wents out of production be course its not only that product, is be course there goes a trend in boying specicik things kind of jante low, or not boying things, though its good, no ones just boys its its a shame, i would love to go to solvang one day and boy your bread, jante low is decaying in dk.
Hey come on out to Racine Wisconsin we got a rather large population of 3rd, 4th and 5th generation of Danes. Unfortunately more and more of them are forgetting their roots and traditions. I just talked to a lady who owns a Scandinavian boutique and is deciding to close up shop because business in recent years has been dropping. You may want to check out Door County WI, it's the Solvang of the midwest...
As a Dane who has visited Solvang, I can say with 100% certainty that it bears no resplendence to Denmark whatsoever. Had it not been for the partially Danish text on various things, I would never have guessed that they were trying to copy my homeland. At best it is a sort of cheap plastic knock off. You know, the kind that just about looks passable in dim light and from the right angle, but as soon as you take a proper look at it, you instantly see that it just isn't right.
I actually have been in Solvang, once albeit, visiting distant relatives and I belong to the group of danes that find this little town 'hyggelig'. I would love to go back and get a real danish again one day..
I can not understand why any Danish person would go there to complain. It is like a time pocket of Danish culture mixed with American culture. Why would you want it to be like where you just visited from? I would love to visit it whenever I get to go the US.
Way more interesting than Elk Horn, IA. (Another Danish town in US) Jeg vil gerne besøg denne her by! I have to remember to swing over there next time I am in California.
All I remember from Copenhagen is the desk clerk, in the hotel I was staying at, short changed me on some transaction and stuck the money he stole under the cash bin in the register. I watched the SOB do it! I told him that money BETTER be back in my room by 4:00 or I'll NAIL the bastard! The money was there!
the so called danish pastry he is showing actually came to Denmark with bakers from Wien there for the name wienerbrød. a hanekam is just a plain piece of wienerbrød with some almondcream inside dressed with nuts and sugar, there are alot more interesting options for wienerbrød the danish bakeries are making now.
This may be a dumb question, but do danishes( the pastries) actually originate in Denmark.. If so I want a lifetime supply of Danish danishes, Chesse danishes preferably lol!
Justin, The funny thing is that the Danish that you get in America is not really the same as the ones you get in Denmark (where we are not calling them danishes but wienerbrød). On www.Danes.tv I'm making map of Danes in America. It will go live February 28th. The map will also contain danish places. Here you will find Danish bakeries. They all make the original danishes as they tast in Denmark. Also in Denmark we don't have chesse danishes. That an American thing :)
They were originally brought to Denmark a few hundreds years ago by austrian bakers, but then modified by danish bakers who made a few changes in the recipe.
Give it a try,you might at least find it amusing. My parents are Danish born(Kobenhavn,Aalborg) and thought it was cute. They sent countless pictures of the Dannebrog surrounded by cacti to relatives.
The danes who talks so much about integration, when it comes to foreigners in Denmark, sure does a good job when they are the foreigners. Argh just kidding love the Danes and Denmark and love that you try to keep your roots. Greetings from København. Danmark for altid. For altid Danmark!!
Well, if it's sunny all year 'round, then it's not very Danish xD
Hahahahaha definitely true XD
Jeg ser en slående mangel på cykler.
The baker's accent is so pure danish it's amazing it's like watching an old danish movie
A great video! Thank you! I love Solvang but I've never been to Denmark and I always wondered what the Danish people felt about the town. This was very insightful

That is really awesome. I am a Dane myself and I wish to visit CA someday. Might swing by and see the town for myself ^^
"We're not trying to emulate Denmark."
But also "More Danish than Denmark!=)#(!=!?!?!??!??!!"
More danish than Denmark i taking it a bit far. But it obviously represents danish traditions as they were at a certain time in history. Solvang is like denmark..... in 1900 ... ._.
No really but it looks that way.
+Muddlefoot -M- Solvang makes me think of Holland
***** This comment is 2 years old lol
American versions of anything look like Disneyland. The cities in USA are like that. Cookie cutter
+MV M solvang is different. It's not built artificially by people who weren't Danes, but it does look artificial through years of renovations.
Hvor ser det hyggeligt ud :-)
Greetings from the old country! I would love to visit your beautiful town.
You should. It lovely 🇩🇰
Thank you for your comment :)

Well done. I will try to include Solvang on a future trip to California.
Pastries? They are still extremely common in Denmark >w
Hanekam... Københavner birkis... Eller Te birkis ;) Jo de eksisterer endnu
He is Danish Nikolaj. But here we have snow up in the mountains. That's what he was talking about. We are all aware that there are no mountains in Denmark.
This is about as Danish .....as Germany. And " Smörgåsbord " is a Swedish word. The only Danish part of this, is the baker....god bless him.
MissOrtvald, it is very hyggeligt and of course not more danish than Denmark ;) But I think it's safe to say that some old Danish traditions are being kept in Solvang that does not exist any longer in Denmark. Maybe some pastries and one of them?
Why am I reading the subtitles, I speak Danish... !?
USA need some Jantelaw!
Fuch yeah
Jeg er vild med den konditor/bager!
I want to just move here. Having lived in sweden but always missed the USA, this is perfect.

one thing i think about: can you get "rugbrød" made the right way in solvang? by the right way i mean with sourdough
I'm pretty sure you can't. I was in Solvang, and you couldnt get it as i remember.
+danm22 Then what do they serve for the open bread herrings?
Hey come on out to Racine Wisconsin we got a rather large population of 3rd, 4th and 5th generation of Danes.

Are you sure John Wayne was Dutch?
I actually have been in Solvang, once albeit, visiting distant relatives and I belong to the group of danes that find this little town 'hyggelig'. I would love to go back and get a real danish again one day..
Hvordan indvandrer man til USA i dag?
Laver I ikke nogle flere videoer?
Yay Mr Olsen!! The Bakery! Best one in town!! :) :)
I can not understand why any Danish person would go there to complain. It is like a time pocket of Danish culture mixed with American culture. Why would you want it to be like where you just visited from?
I would love to visit it whenever I get to go the US.
it can NEVER be more danish than Denmark xD
@Pepe The Great Slap dog af.
That man obviously resents the modern multicultural Denmark.
Because he is old, that entire generation and older resents modern Denmark in some way 😊
As well he should.
Who wants to be like Sweden?
I guess your "modern multicultural" Denmark looks more like Saudi Arabia now?
Well it not really an actual law, it is more a description of the mentality of a lot of danes (and Scandinavians in general).
Way more interesting than Elk Horn, IA. (Another Danish town in US) Jeg vil gerne besøg denne her by! I have to remember to swing over there next time I am in California.
Yes, Solvang is a great danish city. I was just there again. See my latest video here on this channel.- Kim
I don't understand how you Danes can stand the heat when you move to SoCal.

My whole life is a lie, haha!!!
I'm sure not :) - Kim
They were originally brought to Denmark a few hundreds years ago by austrian bakers, but then modified by danish bakers who made a few changes in the recipe.
Roberto Mancini and then modified heavily again when they were taken to America
Tak for tilbagemeldingen.
Wow. I've been to California....but next time I'd definitly visit Slovang
Janteloven er der så ikke mere!
Og tak for det!...
Give it a try,you might at least find it amusing. My parents are Danish born(Kobenhavn,Aalborg) and thought it was cute. They sent countless pictures of the Dannebrog surrounded by cacti to relatives.
I don't know. Don't read them if you don't want to :)
denmark is literally denmark. u cant be more danish than denmark lmao
wow

Greetings from København.
Danmark for altid. For altid Danmark!!
Out of a million Danish immigrants, or descendents of Danes, only 30000 still speak Danish.
Min drøm er at komme til at bo i the us måske i Solvang
Det også et rigtig dejligt sted Anders.
Mener du Himmelbjerget?
sorry i meant kim :-)
Nej. I have been there. It is nice but it is like California.
Study Danish or Norwegian with Phrasebooks by Harald Pennson.
Thats more like holland
that Danish bakery owner was so funny , he was on the food network ha good for him ... except for all the undertones of racism in this video ha
Sry but when did you "encounter" these racist undertones? I surely didn't notice any...
It looks more German than anything, I would say.
good video afbudt solvang
arrrh Wienerbrød dét har vi sgu endnu ;-)
Isn't Danish a pastry?
Integrere jer!
Solvang is nothing but a parody of a Denmark long gone.
Især i hovedstaden.
what the fuuuuuuck
you're welcome ?B;-D
Istedgade Overgiver Sig Aldrig!
Man kan skaffe "ukrudt" over alt i Danmark. TV2 har bevist det. 😋
Nope... Not even close. :)
