Hey Friends!
If you're on this channel, chances are you've heard of the cabal of arcane smiths over at Origin Effects, and are familiar with their game-changing compressors.
Nothing seems to be able to prevent them taking a good thing (the Cali76 Compact) and making it better! The new Cali76 Bass Compressor keeps the intuitive and bass-loving operation of the Cali Compact and adds the visual luxury of a Gain Reduction Meter (yay!) and internal voltage boosting up to 24v (okay!).
This is a great pedal for bassists, with a HPF to leave your earthquake frequencies free to do their thing, and a "Dry" knob to add some life back to your signal after you get your peaks under control. I had a blast getting to know this marvel of British Brushed Aluminum.
As always, let me know what you think in the comments, and thanks for watching. You've been amazing.
I'm one of this dude's biggest fans, and I personally think the goal at 7:00 is pure genius: "Make Slapping Tolerable". It's the true meaning of bass in yo face.
Nice touch adding the meter. Having a visual cue helps to confirm you’ve not shanked a control with an errant toe kick on a dark stage.
Glad to have you back Amos! :)
Amos, this is easily the best explanation of the 6 knobs on the origin compact bass compressor. Past and present. Thank you sir! Keep up the great demos!
Literally, the best demo on this peddle. Awesome playing as well. Thanks.
This is the only pedal demo on TH-cam to use the word “knobbery.” 😊 As a new owner of this pedal myself, I totally agree that it’s the cat’s pajamas. The pre in this thing is magic.
Good to see you back making videos!
I watched a pedal demo from you years ago, compressors have come so far, this is such a smooth rich sound. It's all very interesting.
Dude! This video rocked man! Thanks for making this. that brown Yamaha bass was 🔥🔥🔥
Heck yeah, Amos is back. Loving the big blademan fitted Yamaha, sounds awesome.
Great Bass demo. Great production and presentation, and inspiring playing. Well done!
Great review! Love your videos.
Awesome demo! Glad you are back doing videos!
Incredible demo as usual. Well done Amos !
Great demo Amos. Brilliant track.
Very nice. Killer demo as always!
Another fantastic review as always Amos!
Great demo. Thanks Amos. Got mine in today and can’t wait to give it a run.
Another great review. Really love the sound of those Yamaha basses.
Great playing and demo!!!
What a great video. Demo and playing are super killer of course, but your video chops are getting really solid!
Brilliant review thankyou
Love your videos!!! Would love to see a comparison between this and the Empress Bass Compressor since it also has similar controls and metering!
Thanks Amos for this excellent review. This compressor seems to cover some of the same territory as the Empress Mk II, but it also has its own tone.
Hey Amos! Excellent review - thanks for your perspective and demo settings! I've had mine for a day or two and I've been super impressed with this updated platform. Going to spend some more time comparing the CB to V2, but so far I'm not hearing anything in the V2 that's missing. Just moar better. Enjoy your walk!
Awesome grooves!
Thanks for this!
Such smooth playing and feel, you should consider being a touring musician
Hahaha!
Awesome video, no fluff, just the good stuff. Thanks!
Pretty much what I’m aiming for! Thank you!
I was waiting to see that new custom Yamaha in action, looks and sounds great!
Oh, and the pedal too. Got me wanting one to compare with my Empress Mkii bass comp :)
Awesome content, Amos. I have been eyeballing the older versions of the Cali76 but this new version just seems to be ticking all the boxes that had me on the fence before. Long story to say it's on the way..
Oh and by the way, I love love LOVE your custom BB. Yamaha has been putting out amazing basses; if a version similar to yours would be released as a signature, I'm pretty sure they'd fly off the shelves. So tasty sounding AND looking!
I just recently got the previous version and it became my favorite compressor. I immediately ordered one of these when I saw they were coming out. They made one of the best compressors even better.
這影片示範如何調整compressor的部分太棒了!
Nice demo. I had the Cali76 Compact Bass for the last few years and it's been a wonderful compressor. I snached one of these up as soon as it was announced and it's simply brilliant! Just when I thought the Cali76 couldn't really be improved upon, the new Bass Compressor comes along. I LOVE the LED metering. That was my only gripe about the Compact Bass.
Welcome back!
Thanks for sharing this, nice playing... Need one myself but this Cali76 is not easy to find around me, Thomann Germany haven't this in stock for a while.
Can't go wrong with either the Cali76 or the Empress Bass Compressor. I tend to prefer the Empress because I'll take separate Attack/Release controls over continuous ratio settings, personally, and I like having separate meters for both input and gain reduction.
That Yamaha is stunning!!
Thanks! She’s a killer
Such a classy review... Awesome! But I admit I was 50% here for the Cali and 50% for the BB Custom. When we're getting a demo of it?
Have you tried it compared to the double stacked? Wondering what the best would be for rock/metal.
🎯
Hi Amos, Is that a new Yamaha BB? And can you tell me what strings you are using these days? Great demo as usual! Thanks! Brent, VT
Thanks Brent! It’s a custom piece they were nice enough to make me. And I use D’addario NYXL .045-.105
I love my Cali 76. This one had me at the meter. The power conversion from 9v to 24v is something they picked in their school days at Hogwarts.
These guys have big Ravenclaw energy
Hey Amos, roughly how many Hz do you tend to set your HPF to on comps that have it?
This is my first experience with it, and I don’t know for sure since they aren’t marked on the pedal. I just went with feel
@@AmosHeller it's from 0Hz to 400Hz, so noon would be 200Hz, and so on. As I mentioned already, the HPF is in the sidechain and is here only to determine, which frequencies above the HPF knob will trigger the Compressor. Its not a usual HPF, where the lows are not affected by the Compressor. Here, the whole signal gets compressed, when the Comp kicks in.
This video had a bit of everything. Engaging demos. A tiny masterclass in pedal settings. Convincing me to buy a pedal I did not know I needed. Encouragement to go outside.
I take a holistic approach. Drink some water while you’re at it!
How does this compare with the Darkglass Hyper Luminal?
Less versatile out of the box (only one mode) and as a result a little more focused. The HL in FET mode is doing an impression of the 1176 just as this one it. Loved the HPF on the Cali
"The names Heller, Amos Heller...0007" 🔫
Sharp eyes on this one!
I think it's the first time I understood why as a bass player NEED a compressor
A lot unlocked for me when I really started to understand compression. My first Cali76 was the most I’d really been able to feel it.
Dear Amos,
I noticed you understood the HPF wrong. It doesn't act as a HPF per se (leaving the low frequencies unafected). The HPF on this unit is in the sidechain and only determines, which frequencies hits the compressor . But still, the whole signal will be compressed, also the lows.
@Kbctl9190 nope, he literally says: "the HPF will leave the low frequencies alone", which it doesnt. And literally writes: increase the HPF to recover some lows", which it doesn't. Also: "lets rescue some low end / add some unbothered lows" again, not what the HPF does.
@@KaltOhm exactly THAT is NOT what is happening! The COMPLETE signal gets compressed, always! The HPF is in the sidechain and determines, which frequencies above the HPF control trigger the compressor. For further information, check the official quick start guide video at 5.14
@@KaltOhm for further information, check the Origin Effects Quick Start Guide at 5.14, strangely I can't post the link, as it gets deleted every time...
I hope you have recovered from your tour with Taylor Swift and you enjoyed Australia. Mate!
