  • Here are six of my favorite tunes in Sawmill Tuning . Same Old Man At The Mill, The Lowlands of Holland, Jenny Nettles, Kitchen Girl, Tatter Patch , and Elzic's Farewell. I wanted to work in and out of Dorian Mixolydian and Ionian modes to show how versatile this tuning can be . I am playing on a Kevin Enoch Dobson model with Nylgut strings

    I'm a new player. After a couple of months of noodling, practicing, TH-cam tutorials, etc., I find this is the type/ style of banjo I feel myself increasingly drawn to. I'm so please to have found this medley of tunes. I admire your playing very much.

    I wanted to get a Scottish one in there and I love Jenny Nettles for its shape .A bit silly to do 6 but there are so many things you can do with a suspended 4th tuning . Lovely Joan was in there for a while but the rhythm is so different I thought better of it ..

    Could anyone tell me how exactly to tune to sawmill? I've been playing guitar my whole life but have very recently got into clawhammer style of banjo playing

    • @guywolff
      @guywolff  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hello Ben .. So the most common first tuning one learns for banjo is "G" tuning (very much like "Spanish Tuning" on guitar for slide work) ..G tuning for banjo is gDGBD from fifth to first string (Fifth string lower case) to find Sawmill tuning just bring the second string B up to a C note or gDGCD .. As you can hear in the clip this tuning is great for working in DOrian mode and doing melody playing .. All the best , GUy

  • @mikeelmo8532
    @mikeelmo8532 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello Guy, amazing as always. Questions on your strings: which style of Nylgut are you using? Did you have the nut modified to accommodate the larger string diameters? If so, did you do yourself out bring to a luthier?

    • @guywolff
      @guywolff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As Nygut strings change I have tried a lot of them ..I like the medium classical set with a red fourth .. I have never had to change any of my banjos's nuts . Now and then there is a sharp corner on a turnner hole that has to be softened ..

    • @mikeelmo8532
      @mikeelmo8532 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply! I just put a set of the Nylgut reds on my Pisgah. The nuts seemed a little shallow, which was why I asked, but so far they're holding the strings. They do sound amazing!

  • @grody_highroller
    @grody_highroller 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    can you put those nylgut strings on any ol banjo? they sound wonderful. i dont play bluegrass so i dont really like or want the tinny metallic sound. love the thuddy warm tone of these better.

    • @guywolff
      @guywolff  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you can . You may have some sharp spots to file down .. You will know if strings keep snapping in the same place as you are putting them on .. Buy a few sets when you are sorting that out ..Soon enough you will figure out whats what and by then you will also know how to do a bowline knot . All the best , Guy Elderly sells Classic Aquilla nylgut strings .. .

    May I ask which chords you're using for the first song? I just started learning banjo and have recently discovered sawmill tuning! I've been learning songs by watching TH-cam videos. Amazing playing! :)

    • @guywolff
      @guywolff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      On this group of tunes I am playing the melody line and not adding any chords ...If this was in a G sawmill ..Same old Man at the Mill would have a G chord then an F chord a G and a D (and sometimes anF again ) out on a G again .Look for Clint Howard AT Smithsonian for the original .. You may slow down the video to half speed or slower using windows media player. You will need to be able to save the video, then use windows media player and navigate to the interface that allows you to use the slider to slow down the playback speed. This has helped me to hear and see what is being done when the video shows you the left ( or right, as the case may be) hand on the fretboard. You can also more readily identify the melody line being played

    • @lldanj
      @lldanj 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marc, you can slow down videos on youtube. Just click the gear in the lower right corner of the video. Very handy for learning songs.

      So much for me thinking I'm on the cutting edge. Believe it or not, I'm using Ubuntu /Chrome now, and there are no speed tools under the settings. Just checked, they are there in Firefox. Firefox is a bunch of slavering Progressives, I try to boycott them.

      Guy,thanks for your reply.Being a newbie to the banjo wondering how gut strings would work or sound on a Whyte Ladie.Thanks

    • @guywolff
      @guywolff  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @114540117771896127229 The WL has a great clear tone and is great with Nylgut strings . Some find them a little quieter but I have a hard attack so its not a problem for me .. I also like a higher bridge for my playing .. Hammer ons and Pull offs have a different reaction time with a higher bridge .. None of this is woth experimenting with the first year IMHO .. All the best , Guy
