    I've been railfanning since the age of 5 along the NEC in Norwalk, CT, followed up by the (former) B&O RR in Lima, Ohio. I just purchased a scanner for the first time. I even have a magnetic roof mount. My question is this. When I plug the scanner in a USB port, my computer (windows 10) can charge the scanner but it still doesn't "notice" the device like it would if I plugged my phone in. Any suggestions?

    Your CTCSS is a squelch tone. Which enables you to listen to a specific group, A scenario would be Union Pacific, BNSF sharing the same frequency, A Tone set for Union Pacific, you would only hear them on the channel, You would not hear any BNSF radio chatter. A CTCSS tone eliminates unnecessary static noise or public communications.

    This may be a dumb question but is the software download necessary to program the scanner or can't frequencies be programmed on their own without that software download?

    Thanks for the info, I made sure all the frequencies were right, they were, but i`ve been listening on scan all day and haven't heard anything..is this normal? I only heard one ore two sentences from someone, shouldn't`t I be hearing defect detectors and stuff?

    • @mopac1851
      @mopac1851 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on your area you might not hear a lot. Make sure that you are scanning all of the banks that you have programmed in too.

      Update: Last Night I went to Near the Austin Sub, I actually Picked up the Defect detector at Milepost 182, I then began to hear non stop transmissions from Amtrak #21, and the dispatcher, But from the UP San Antonio Sub. Once I left the trackside, they began to fade out until I can`t get anything from home. After I heard the engineer of Amtrak call a "Clear" He passed. The signal he passed turned green after but I didn`t see it, Then a Northbound Freight snuck up on me heading in the opposite direction, I never heard Dispatch giving it the clear after Amtrak, I only heard the defect detector after it passed. I never heard a word from the crew, only the Amtrak Engineer and the Dispatcher, Do Union Pacific crews Call out every Milepost and signal they pass? `cause this one stayed quiet the whole time, even after it passed.

      @mopac1851 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I know UP crews won't call clear signals or mileposts.

    • @jbrannon509

      You're scanning frequencies and it will stop on the first one that has a transmission but you can listen to audio of more than one frequency at one time.

    The Close Call function has two modes for displaying the received frequency. In the first mode, you need to have time to press any button very quickly,
    to see the transmitter frequency. The second mode makes a temporary write to the databank memory register called CLOSE CALL HITS.
    The most difficult thing is to find and see what is written in this bank. Before each start of the CLOSE CALL function, it is necessary to enter the Close Call menu,
    find the Scan Hits function, go into it, and select SCAN HITS ON and press the PgmE button. After you start the Close Call only mode, and after,
    when you receive the carrier frequency, you can view it later, while the Close Call function is running, press the SCAN button,
    then immediately the HOLD button, you turn the knob at the top of the scanner counterclockwise and find the treasured data bank called CLOSE CALL HITS,
    and there are all your received frequencies.
