Next time do this over a few days by doing small layers. This allows all the water to freeze into ice. Otherwise you end up with a ice layer over water like a frozen lake.

Depends on the temp, i think water freezes faster at colder temps, so if its just below freezing keep to to half inch layers or less.

Quick tip from someone who used to work in a rink use thin layers of water so it is frozen all the way through and you dont have a pond to fall through

What I learned about backyard ice rinks is that thin layers of water freeze better. So putting like 1-2 inches of water at a time, letting that freeze then add another layer. Freezing in layers makes the ice solid all the way through. If it gets cold enough, your rink will freeze all the way through. Also it's so cool to see a dad that creates these kinds of spaces for his family. My parents made a backyard rink for me as a kid, and it is seriously the best thing!

Good job, but, if you see the thickness of the ice ...put just a little less water than that thickness to start...when that freezes add about a 1/4 inch at a time... you started with to much thermal mass. Add thin layers often and you'll get thicker, stronger, smoother ice..... I spent a few hours watching ice put down in a professional ring and they literally used a regular hose and that's all they did...over and over....

Maybe try doing it layer by layer essentially doing a super thin layer, let it freeze, then add another thin layer, let it freeze, etc... It should work faster since thinner layers will freeze faster plus it would probably end up being much more solid
