  • New No Dig Area After 9 Months - see the results of using no dig methods to transform weedy pasture into an area full of vegetables. We started in February and this is November. Vegetables you see are second plantings after summer harvests, such as leeks following potatoes, and mustard after winter squash. The mustard is dual use cover crop (green manure), plus we cut plant tips for adding to the salad mixes I sell.
I show you also how we use black polythene as a temporary weed barrier, against bindweed mainly. We transplant through holes in it, then the polythene under the plant leaves saves so much time weeding. The rain can trickle into those holes and we rarely water - there is no irrigation system here.
The no dig book I show you at the end is based on my forty years of growing, and is available from us: charlesdowding...
In North America you can buy it from Chelsea Green www.chelseagre....
In addition we created an online course about No-Dig gardening and until 31st December 2021 you can buy it half price from my website charlesdowding...
See the August video from this area • No Dig New Area Summer... . We have made a video every two or three months since starting in February, filmed by Edward my son, using a gimbel.
Filmed and edited November 2021 by Alessandro or ‪@SpicyMoustache‬ whose excellent You Tube channel is about no dig gardening in urban London / spicymoustache
Homeacres is in Somerset, SW England latitude 51N, zone 8 climate / maritime temperate, lowest winter temperatures -7C 19F.

Hello Charles! Peeeero no. Es necesario empezar cavando. Luego si se puede ir poniendo compost. Gracias por los subtítulos. Estaré atenta a nuevos videos.

      ¡Hola Maria!

It gives great perspective of where everything is, that sometimes you just can't get from the ground, and I'm really hoping you do a time-lapse from breaking ground on the pond, to when it's established. Slugs...I didn't have big ones this year, honestly I don't really have them bad at all, but I started feeding the cats outside on the porch and I had really small ones come and eat that. Maybe some cat food out away from the garden might be more appetizing.??

Charles Dowding talks about some of this (microbial life, live roots, nutrient cycling etc) in this one...

Good production by Spicy Moustache. I’ve noticed no low frame rate cutaways.
My only feedback is that it’s a shame to lose your purple branding with the formal typeface. Feels more appropriate than the more “urban” typeface used in this video. Also, the use of stock footage isn’t nice. It reduces the production value of the video and makes it look more amateur. Do you ever see stock footage on Gardeners World for example?
    Hope that helps!

Gidday Charles from New Zealand, we transformed our front yard lawn ( 2inches soil/grass)on a very ROCKY subsoil here over the past year to form 10 ten metre long beds 30inches wide using your no dig method and so far this spring its been simply amazing the results from compost added to the surface. We are having a vege garden tour with about 15-20 like minded people from our local community to pass on this knowledge tomorrow, showing them how easy it is to do the same. We are also starting to sell some excess produce to people in our local area and in the process forming much needed personal relationships and building community at the same time in these trying times. Our copy of your older no dig book will take pride of place on the book table! My wife and I can't thank you enough! Sending you and your family compliments of the season. Cheers Mike and Lynette

Dear Charles, thanks for the update, everything looks wonderful, and it's really lovely to watch what's going on. After years of having traditional dug allotments, my partner and I started ours in January this year on a new, to us, allotment in our new town and started out with no dig on a plot that had been left for 8 years! I LOVE no dig, for so many reasons, like not having to dig much (the parsnips are a pig though), way fewer weeds (we are hoping we've weakened the bindweed this year!!), and the veg being so much more healthy and strong (so far fewer pest problems because the plants are stronger). My mental health has suffered through the past year but my allotment has given me so much joy and a large part of that is how you've shown me this way of gardening. A massive thank you

No dig is the way to go for me. You are right about perennial weeds Charles, I find Dock is the worst for me, but the fields around are full of it. Constant battle! I appreciate all your advice. Thankyou! My allotment will be in its third year after Xmas.

What a treat to find your videos! Last year I was do overwhelmed with details, details and more details I was nearly paralyzed with worry of doing something "wrong". I grew most of my veggies in buckets but I'm switching to no dig and am SO EXCITED to get started. Thank you for the simplification of it all!

At the beginning of this year i ran out of cash :( so couldn't build my nice big raised bed like I planned. So I had cardboard and lots of bags of compost. So all I did was lay the cardboard down then the cardboard ontop and started planting I did so well with my pumpkins and peas not so good on sweed and leek as slugs got my sweed and my leeks might of been put in to late opps. In October I got an allotment plot and been working on that and will be doing no dig in raised beds as I was luckily and theres lots of good size raised beds and a frit cage. Keep up the good work look forward to seeing the pound.

That sounds good and fair enough if you like raised beds. As you noticed, great results happen with open-sided mounds!

I checked on my potatoes this morning and noticed that the flower has fruited what looks like a tomato. I was shocked at first. I thought I had created some kind of hybrid because I have tomato plants growing next to them. A bit of googling shows that is how a potato grows in the right conditions. I never knew that they fruited.

Interesting eh? The fruits are poisonous though and seeds have probably cross pollinated

In the 1920s Hans Egon Döblin transplanted rye seedlings. They were raised in trays or beds. When the plants were about 20 cm tall they were transplanted into the soil 9-11 cm deep so that the first nodium is below ground level. Spacing was 10 to 15 cm. During the season soil was put against the plants from the sides to enhance rooting and in order to grow more "stems" from one plant. In 1926/27 Döblin harvested 1000 kg per hectare. This method was used sucessfully by others as well. I read about it in this book: "Der Kleinsthof" by Oswald Hitschfeld, OLV Verlag
I want to try it with oat for muesli next year.
    Cheers!
