  • In This episode I talk about the difference between slotted and slotless motors. Some useful links for this are:

Parker says here: • How a Servo Motor is C... at minute 2:10 that at large diamaters the additional magnets needed drive the cost and they switch to slotted motors.
Another great example of a slotless design is: www.kontronik.c...

    1. easy to manufacture (SL)
    2. stator segments make easy to wind coils (S)
    3. No Cogging torque quiet operation and smooth performance (SL)
    4. concentrated windings in Slotted makes its toque density higher (S)
5 . Slotless also reduces damping
    6. heat dissipation is easy in slotted as iron has edge over epoxy resin
    7. Slotless motors are typically designed with sinusoidal torque output that produces negligible distortion, rather then a trapezoidal voltage output.
    8. high power density in slotted (S)

So small slotless would not be useful for an electric bike. But what if for instance, there were several mounted flat around the rear wheel. Maybe it would be expensive! But no magnet drag, Maybe zero drag when pedaling with the motor off?
