    Love this song. Love this album. It’s one of those rare no skips albums. Every song is great and is so cohesive with the others.

    You're listening to a "throw away" song by Andy Partridge, which is still an astounding song lyrically, with some of the most incredible drumming on record (Priarie Prince), a mind blowing arrangement by Rundgren, and the "reaction" is..."that's pretty good...getting that beatnik vibe, etc."
    Andy is without a doubt the most important Pop songwriter since the era of Beatles, Kinks, and Wilson. Go further into XTC's music. Strip away the 80's/90's glossy production and just *listen*, even read the lyrics while listening, to this band.
    The most intelligent, poignant, drop dead gorgeous pop music since the 60s. Keep in mind, they became a completely different band after the late 70s "Drums and Wires" and even the incredibly important and classic "English Settlement".
    Start with their pseudonym band, The Dukes of Stratosphere. Chips From The Chocolate Fireball is the complete set from the 2 EPs.
    It's simply the greatest 60s psychedelic album of all time. Bar None. Except it was merely a side project of XTC in 1984. TH-cam the video of "Mole From The Ministry" or "So Pale and Precious". The latter is the greatest Brian Wilson song that Brian never wrote. Andy did. Effortlessly, on a whim, as a side project to give tribute to the bands we all love from the 60s.
    Then listen to "Skylarking", Oranges and Lemons, Nonesuch (very possibly their finest album), and then Apple Venus Vol. 1 (Andy's favorite) and Apple Venus Vol. 2 "Wasp Star".
    My unsolicited list of the *most accomplished* Pop songwriters that are not named Simon, Wonder or Dylan are:
    1. Ray Davies
    2. Brian Wilson
    3. Andy Partridge
    4. John Lennon
    5. That Paul guy

    Interesting choice. It's not what most would consider a typical XTC song (and I'm not sure Andy Partridge is the best singer for this kind of material), but I'm guessing that was Rob's point -- to show their range. Although they wouldn't reach these heights until late in their run, and having Todd Rundgren handle production didn't hurt (although Rundgren famously fell out with the band during the making of this album.)

    It's not true that XTC literally never made any money from their music. I believe they earned songwriting royalties and were paid advances against their mechanical royalties. But they were stuck in a cycle where each new album they recorded for Virgin put them back in "debt" to the label, so that they had to break free of the label before they could actually earn out and start getting royalties from album sales. I'm pretty sure they make money on sales/plays of their back catalog now. Of course, it still sucks that they were robbed of millions(?) in revenue during their prime!

    • @JustinPanariello
      @JustinPanariello  ปีที่แล้ว

      I read otherwise. Their manager screwed them royally and they made ZERO. Its in another XTC video i did.

    • @sylvanm4216
      @sylvanm4216 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JustinPanariello Yes, I watched that video, but it's just not quite the whole story. They made zero money from touring and from their recordings during their time with Virgin. However, the record company advanced them at least some money to pay for their living expenses. Additionally, songwriters receive royalties separately from recording artists, so if you write and record your own songs, normally you get two income streams. XTC the band got nothing, but Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding were paid as if they were songwriters-for-hire, writing music for some other band to record. So Dave Gregory, the non-songwriting guitarist, really got the short end of the stick!

    Produced by Todd Rundgren makes it a pretty much guaranteed monster hit. Talk to The Band and Meat Loaf about it.

    • @SmartCookie2022
      @SmartCookie2022 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it wasn't a monster hit. The song was the B-side to "The Meeting Place" which only reached number 100 on the UK Singles Chart. Even the album wasn't a guaranteed monster hit, only reaching its peak position of number 70 on the Billboard 200.

    Justin, If you get a chance, look up the original cover art for this album. I believe it was only issued in the UK. I would imagine it's out there, but then again, who knows. It is, shall we say... Provocative?

  • @KirkVandermiller
    @KirkVandermiller 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    XTC made rockin' music that was also art. Art rock is a dangerous and frequently annoying genre. Rock is supposed to be simple and fun. But some weirdos - like XTC - can't resist trying to take it to another level of art and sophistication. And they usually succeed.

    I made a tier list of XTC's studio album songs and this got an F rating. One of my least favorite songs. Only 10 songs made it to F tier. This is compared to other XTC songs and not just songs in general. If you love it that's fine. Art is subjective.
