- 🇷🇺 Whist travelling the backwaters of Russia I heard about the Mordvoian people who speak a language called Moksha. And so began my journey to a village deep in Europe in search of someone who could teach me a few words.

My heart melted when the sweet old lady said she's going to change into the traditional Moksha outfit for him. She thought he is a correspondent from a foreign country and that's why she wanted to represent her culture. Amazing lady!

I am from Lithuania and my grandmother also have village like this where she spends her summers, my grandfather died 14 years ago, everytime I come to visit her and she feel lonely and bored, of course her health is not as good as this babushkas in the video, but she grows veggies in her garden only thing makes her happy and interesting right now. You can imagine how happy they felt to welcome someone from country like England, they probably never met a foreigner tourist in their village, so even you are living boring or not a boring life it would still make the day more interesting.

Seems to me that if there were more people like you, travelling and meeting people with no agenda other than learning new languages, sharing laughs (and an occasional drink) the world could only become a better place. @@xdygmnyrdf He is right, peasant and christian are quite similar words in russian, one is "христианин" - christian and another is "крестьянин" - peasant, literally baptized man. If you are non-native speaker it's easy enough to mistake one for another.

I thank you for introducing Russian culture and landscapes. I suggest you to meet the Veps (Vepsian) people, it is a very rare people who live in Leningrad Oblast, Vologda Oblast and Karelia (they are only 5000 in the world!). The Vepsians are a Finno-Ugric people just like Mordovians. Thank you again for your work :)

@@constructivist6 Not much. However there are some words that share the same roots and are still recognizable, but overall they are rather different. The languages have gone through various of changes and had completely different influences. The closest languages to Finnish are Karelian, Ingrian, Estonian and Veps.

Because, they haven't much seen the outer world. They are not spoiled like most of us. This globalization makes humans crazy. Everyone runs behind money and don't care of others. Everyone one wants to be the best of all. So sad. These people in this village living a happy life.
Just imagine you living your whole life in a small viliage. You never travelled much, you never went outside of your region and then suddenly an englishman knocks on your door and wants to hear your native language.. Thats an adventure for the babushka and for bald. He clearly made her day.

A little thing that Ben probably didn't know, this type of a song the lady performed is traditional Russian folk music genre called chastushki (частушки). It's usually humorous verses sung with the same tune.

There is not only Moksha, there is also Ersya language. Mordva is actually Russian exonym for two ethnic groups - Moksha and Ersya, who speak different languages - similar, but mutually unintelligible.

English: "fire", Finnish: "tuli", Moksha: "tol"
It is a Uralic language, but very very distantly related to Finnish.
It is the same language group and moksha or mordvins are not Slavic people
@@andrew2263vl11 They are already mixed with Slavic. Even in the times of Ancient Russia, a union of 5 tribes (only 2 of them Slavic, other Finnish) called upon Varangians to come and rule.

Mr Bald, this might come across strange............. this was a happy vlog, interesting and cultural...... but I was close to tears........... not because it was sad, but when she went and dressed up and started singing it was such a lovely thing. These village people that have never met you before, welcome you in to their homes, dress and sing to you and share their history and culture. Its a wondrous thing......... this is why you will break 1 million by Xmas for sure. Fully deserved. You have such a way with your words, you put people at ease, and we get to share the wonderful videos you post from it all...... amazing channel.

I don't think there are any traditional Ainu communities anymore. There's barely any speakers of the language even!
