I used to work as a receptionist for a famous stylist and Elizabeth used to come in all the time. She was so lovely, down to earth, and kind. She would chat with me for the longest time.
Always loved Showgirls and everything else from Verhoeven back in the day! Releasing uncut as NC-17 was extremely bold, but the film told a stylish story about young women trying to make a living in show business. Berkley was convincing and one hell of a dancer.
I have admiration and respect for Elizabeth Berkley. In watching Showgirls you can see that she courageously threw herself into that performance, and then she later handled the rough reception like a pro and never let anything stop her climb.
I was in Canada but we watched SBTB followed by California Dreams every Saturday after a few cartoons. Then wrestling came on and we knew it was time to go out and play!
ladies need to embrace their naturally curly hair, so pretty! I never understood why showgirls got so much backlash, Liz is a great dancer and I liked it.. maybe the storyline.. cause it wasn't the dancing.
I found it hard not to notice. That’s when Tori came in. I liked the character but she was so random of a love interest for Zack. Felt like little explanation about Kelly and the new kid just jumped right into being the new “Kelly”. Sure Tori didn’t go for Zack right away but it was clear she was a new LI of sorts from an audience perspective. Then Kelly and Jessie came back and Tori disappeared with no explanation and it was if she never happened. As a kid that was confusing to me. It wasn’t until I got older and learned oh that weird swap with the love interests happened because actors left. Now I find the and it was like Tori never existed thing funny.
I can't imagine dealing with that amount of ridicule at any age but in your early 20s? That would've sent me spiralling into God knows what. I was about 12 when that film came out and even I remember the furore around it. I never realised that the reaction to it was dumped solely on her. How sad. Everyone involved in that should be ashamed.
I mean, she *WAS* the movie. That was kind of the fucked up thing is that Gershon and McLachlan were the only other really MAJOR characters, and they were kind of untouchable because they already had film careers. Liz *WAS* Showgirls, and fair or not it's failure was dumped on her. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan both of her and of the movie, but there is no denying it is a terrible film, objectively speaking. In later years the director would admit that all of the erratic, spastic acting she did was specifically under his direction to do so, but by then her career was effectively ruined. :9
I have no particular affinity for Berkley, but she definitely got screwed by the system and was unfairly maligned by the Showgirls thing. When I was in college, SBTB in syndication was our comfort food before going to dinner every day.
