I bought two engines from Dex (so far). One was used and the more recent one he rebuilt. Both ran great! I ended up replacing the head on the first (my preference) and the second one has right at 2000 miles since the build. It is running amazing in my 2001 XJ. I appreciate his "realistic" approach to these Jeeps. I will definitely be buying from Dex again.
As a business owner I felt this, and they always think you should fix everything wrong for free. He probably ran it hot from the looks of the rad. But at least you got a good video out of it.
I've had so many people leave the shop, break down in their POS, call me back and blame me. I drive down there to get them and it always turns out to be either a completely other system or bad parts they had previously put on. Personally i have started to avoid all local parts store at any cost, rock auto gets my money.
I’ve found that the crankshaft position sensor on jeeps can cause all sorts of weird issues, from the volt gauge dropping to zero, fuel gage will be on empty even though you know it’s full, motor will randomly cut out and sometimes cut out when hitting harsh pot holes. My son’s jeep needed the head replaced, we drove into the garage changed the head out and it wouldn’t start , it would pop and backfire. Put a new crankshaft position sensor on and it fired right up, we never touched the sensor we changing out the head but yet it went bad
Great video and bad situation but that’s how it goes some days. The buyers mostly likely knows very little about vehicles or he’d have at least checked fuel and fire first thing. Nice work kidd MOPAR2YA 😎
Ima be honest, if it wasn't for your videos and sharing knowledge idk if I would have got my xj running. This video taught me more so when it breaks again I'll be ready
Should do more TJ stuff. Did a tune up (plugs, wires, cap/rotor) with Autozone crap on my '99 4.0 TJ a month or so ago and immediately had a rough running engine, first time I'd used AZ parts in 20 years, remembered why I quit going there. Didn't even try to chase it down, swapped it all out with Accel parts and was running great again. Only thing I buy from autozone now is fluids and batteries.
This is why I shop for my XJ at the junk yard or from American made stuff. Ford 4 hole injectors or the BBK throttle body, factory plenum, WJ airbox tubes and expansion chamber etc. Factory only please and thank you. I wanted the CAD disconnect on my daily for better mileage. You got a video on those? I dont touch the Renix so I know nothing about them
People act like I'm crazy, but i have gotten to where I want OEM replacement parts for anything anymore. New from the dealership or pulled from a junkyard, don't matter much to me.
so speaking of aftermarket grey parts. out of all the parts you can get, do you have a preference? obviously not counting the fact you have the oem junkyard out back. if you were a normal guy with normal access to parts. would you still prefer the junkyard oem stuff? and what should you never junkyard on a xj mj zj etc?
I've had good luck with the brand "standard" for sensors but I'm trying to chase down a rough idle and I'm thinking a standard sensor might have failed.
Lol, I’m waiting on Auto Zone to contact you about bashing their parts quality. But.....when you just telling the truth, what is their argument? Their parts suck, causing you and me both to quit buying Auto Zone parts. Kinda simple.
So I purchased a 6.0 LS junkyard motor came out of a Silverado with approximately 113,000 miles on it. Supposedly it was a turnkey ready to start motor got the wiring harness gas pedal alternator fucking everything and I was gonna drop it in my 96XJ but then I started thinking man I want all the horse ponies so I tore it apart and thank God I did because 2 cylinders are full of water. No biggie but everything else looks good. The bearings look perfect not like I really know what I’m doing. This is my first motor project, so yeah I just want a solid 600 hp for that 96XJ so I smash that skinny I have a grin from ear to ear. I want all the horse ponies well that being said if anybody’s looking for a 4.0 transmission and transfer case I have a 96XJ I’m located right outside of Dallas Texas if anybody’s interested, not trying to steal any business from your DEX BUT I AM IN DALLAS RIGHT OUTSIDE LET ME KNOW BUT IT IS A PROJECT. I TORE IT APART. I CAN’T HELP MYSELF. I GOT TO SEE WHAT’S INSIDE OF THESE THINGS. MY ORIGINAL PLAN WAS TO BUILD THE 4.0 BUT YOU GOTTA LOVE THOSE V8 RIGHT AMERICA.
*** HEY DEX*** 2000 XJ 4x4 4.0 question for you.... You know how the 00-01 XJ's switched over to a split dual cat system, there's like a Y pipe with 2 small cats just before the exhaust manifold. Full disclosure I am not a mechanic. So that split on that Y pipe had a crack and a bad exhaust leak at the neck of the Y. I was stupid and instead of getting the crack welded I trusted a custom exhaust shop to put in a new dual cat system with new o2 sensors. My XJ is low miles and 100% stock, a real cherry so I wanted to keep it as stock as possible. Ever since the exhaust guy put the new dual cat in there the engine runs like crap. Sluggish, check engine coding for cylinder misfires and sometimes I get vapor lock if I try to start the engine when it's hot. Took it to another mechanic who showed me that the exhaust guy welded shut (he called it plugging up) one of the o2 bung holes. So there is an o2 censor in front of the dual cats but he plugged up the one behind the dual cats. I'm guessing the computer doesn't like that missing o2 sensor and the fact that the bung hold is welded shut? Do you think this is making the engine run funny..... clogging up the plugs/injectors and sensors with gum from too much fuel? MAC sensor comes to mind. Sometimes the first 2 minutes of a cold start is loud as hell with black drops of water coming out of the exhaust pipe and a nasty gas smell in the exhaust fumes. Had the jeep 2 years before I had the guy mess with my exhaust and she ran perfect all the time, ever since the exhaust dude plugged up the bunghole where the downstream o2 censor should be it messed everything up. Also the gas milage is terrible now. I was going to take it back to the exhaust shop but they got in some legal trouble so I don't trust them at all. I think I picked the wrong guy to mess with my jeep. Lesson learned there. Sorry for the long question, somehow I think you may be one of the only people out there that can help. MY ONE BURNING QUESTION IS..... Do you know a good brand to replace the 00-01 4.0 XJ entire exhaust system including the dual cat system they used on the 00-01 XJ 4.0. At this point if I'm thinking if I can find a good close stock system I will go ahead and keep the manifold and replace the rest of the exhaust system. I know this was a long one, any thoughts would be appreciated my man. I appreciated all the mods on your Jeeps, really cool stuff. This Jeep I'm talking about is a cherry though so I'm trying to keep her 100% bone stock. Everything works, even the original Jeep key fobs.
I have a jeep xj question. Not i have not problems currently but i have my wiring harness to my thermostat sensors there but no wires hooked up to it ? Could you make a video to replace one
Dex, can you make a video on how to buy, and where to buy parts? What’s wrong with autozone?🥺 I want to fix my 96 up right, it’s really nice. Just a few problems😂
8:30 Buddy your phone got exposed to liquid or was dropped recently. Electronics are susceptible to kinetic shock. Tossing them/Moisture can cause this. Microphones are tiny diaphragms. Under shock or moisture they sound tinny until the diaphragm has been exposed to enough vibration to work it back like a snapple cap. They are water tight now so this is only temporary. This meant a dead mic a decade ago.
tried to swap to the 4 hole injectors in my 95 xj it for some reason no matter the order i put the new injectors the 2 middle injectors wouldn't fire put stock ones back no issue
say away from autozone and autolites 😂 my other jeep i had gotten three crank sensors it would finally start but check engine light still in the end i had go to the dealer and get one and then all was good no light
Im hoping you will answer this can i put a 2001 wj 4.0 in a 1992 xj will the sensors fit i know i got to swap the flex plate and what about motor mounts
Really appreciate your videos. 90 model overheating and good thermostat, good water pump, clear radiator, head and head gasket no signs of cracking. What else could be the cause?
Did you ckeck the Radiator fan clutch? mine went bad on my 4.0, it got a bit warm on hills but kept it cool when driving normaly, thats why i didnt find the problem long time, maybe yours is completely done and therefore has more consequences than i have?
@@haydenwinfrey1337 stick with what your owner's manual says to use. You don't need anything fancy for the 4.0 unless you just like spending money. A good SAE 10w30 and Wix filter has always worked for me with no issues.

Ironically Auto Zone is the first place that pops up with Accel parts when I searched for them 😂
Tj stuff is the same efi system as later model XJ.
Glad I watched this because today my camshaft position sensor magnet decided to fall and the sensor is less then a year old.
Check the ground everytime we put a Jeep engine in. We had problems with ground. Just what I remember
