NYC was known for taking dance music and mixing it and using two of the same records to produce extended riffs etc. That was Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan's specialty. Yes, Frankie did bring the style of "mixing" to Chicago as a DJ. Now the Chi loved what he was doing, but that also sparked their imaginations too, but they wanted to not just mix existing music, but CREATE THEIR OWN DANCE MUSIC! This was the distinction that led to "House Music"! Chicago producers started experimenting with keyboards, drum machines etc creating a particular sound of dance music with repetitive hooks. They took their "newly created" sounds to the local DJ's. Frankie was one of the first to play this newly created music-it was different than the mainstream records that he was used to mixing. Other DJ's then followed and eventually the radio stations started playing this new music. That is when HOUSE MUSIC took off. Frankie was the first to play the new music for the club, but he didnt create it. House music was in fact created by Chicago amateur music producers who were experimenting. Frankie brought his version of dance music to Chicago and took what local producers gave him to play. He gave those producers a chance to shine. Thats why Chicago has dedicated a street named after him in his honor, and labeled him the "The Godfather of House" eventhough he himself never actually "created" the house sound, he used his platform as a DJ at "The Warehouse" nightclub to first play the music created by the local producers. He became the first DJ to play "Chicago-style House Music" which then swept the world.
