    When I was camping in the bwca as a kid with my dad, a thunderstorm came out of nowhere in the afternoon and Dad pitched this before we had the chance to get soaked. We were stuck until morning under it.........all the mosquitoes came in from the rain too until dad found the mosquito netting........ peanut butter and bug sandwiches, a Minnesota delicacy.

      Sorry, Dad put all the other gear under the canoe do it didn't get soaked.

    Simple, concise and no hitch knots to memorize or worry about remembering during a stressful or if cold mechanically impaired situation.

    This is the easiest tutorial I’ve seen for an emergency tarp shelter. I’ve been prepping 72 hr bags and this will be one less thing I’ll have to worry ab.

    I admit, I was surprised at how comfortable the plow point set up is the first time I tried it. It is very handy to have the tarp prepped and ready for either set up, and fold I g the legs into the tarp keeps them with you. Dan, you showed me the set up in class and I now travel everywhere with that tarp. Thank you! Lesson remembered!

    • @SonsOfLorgar
      @SonsOfLorgar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you carry it in or tied onto your backpack? Because I would probably fold, roll and tie it with one of the short loops sticking out and put a carabiner on it to snap it onto the outside of my pack. That way, if needed, It would be readily accessible for use as a rain cover for the backpack too. Maybe even use a poncho style tarp with a flap covered hole in the middle.

    • @douglasmaccullagh7865
      @douglasmaccullagh7865 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SonsOfLorgar I do not think the way I carry my tarp should influence you, and how you carry it should not influence me. Use the carry method that works for you. Now, to answer you - right now it is tucked behind the back seat of the truck. Since my pack has a rain cover, I usually carry it in the pack, but now that I am switching to an army surplus pack, I am taking another look at my options. My method varies. If I experiment with a large haversack, my tarp will tuck inside. Your poncho idea may be a good option, too.

    I super appreciate the approach you took with this. I wish more people would teach simplicity like this. Theres too many people that just buy overated trash survival stuff that wont work when alk they have to do is spend the 15$ and fifteen minutes to do this.

      Comanche nation had 256 named plants for medicinal purposes. A pharmacy at their beck & call. Within a generation of them leaving the hunter gatherer life style & becoming "civilized", 90% of this nature knowledge was forgotten. Use it or loose it! Practice!

    I cut up a large "contractor's" type clear plastic garbage bag into a rectangle, taped the corners, cut holes (for paracord) in taped reinforced corners, and voila, a easily carried "survival" shelter. I like your tie-outs and will include them in my DIY tarp. Thanks.

Excellent that you showed both ways to set the tarp up and this is something that will be remembered for a long time. A small tarp like that is lightweight and inexpensive insurance. That is simple! If you tied your ridgeline knots to the tarp about 8-12 inches from the tarp, you wouldn’t even need the 2nd loop on those corners. Just use the loop created by the ridgeline’s overhand knot when needed as a ground tie out.
    2nd - I want to see Dan V use the Velcro option. :-D

    I'm an ex boyscout and volounteer militia radio specialist, but I'm lazy as fuck, so my every day shoes as a taxi driver are leather with elastic wedges and my army boot strings aren't tied either, they are fitted with a slip lock like the draw strings in most winter jackets so I can get them on faster to reach my fox hole outside XD
    Just because I can tie most knots, raise an 18 man stove heated army tent and set up a 12cm towed mortar in the dark doesn't mean I can be bothered to do any of it unless I see a clear purpose to do so XD

  • @evanwindom3265
    @evanwindom3265 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I get the "easy" part. You said it was "the most effective". Why? What makes it any more effective than any other lean-to? A lean-to is fast and easy, but not very complete in terms of protection, so I'd like to understand how you're defining effectiveness here. I do completely agree that prepping the shelter - however you choose to tie or rig it - before you go out is important. Trying to rig a bunch of trucker's hitches or whatever when you're in the weather or wearing gloves isn't ideal.

      I think his point was any tarp that is about 5x7 feet will do. If you are taller than 7” then get a 6x8 etc. Keep it simple. Use a shower curtain, or a dozen chicken feed bags sewn together. Improvising is creative thinking. It requires flexibility.

    • @krishoogstraat6866

    Why do you need a survival shelter? I don't get it. When I pack for outdoors activity there will be a tent on my bag. I would feel if I lost it 100% :D I've never understood the survival shelter thing at all because of that. It's like building a survival shelter indoors, just in case the walls come off. PS: I'm not trying to be an asshole about it, I'm just curious.

    • @coalcracker
      @coalcracker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s intended to be carried when you wouldn’t normally be carrying a tent. So a day hike, trail run, hunting. In case something goes down at least you have a shelter. This one is small when packed but we are coming out with something even smaller so you can fit it in your pocket. Hope that helps

  • @carlbernsen1290
    @carlbernsen1290 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    But one handed? And a fire one handed? I’m curious as to why survival tarp users don’t add ‘wings’ to fill in the sides against shifting wind and rain. And a lightweight floor to keep off the wet ground. And maybe a simple drop down front piece to really shelter inside and keep out biting bugs. And what if no trees? Maybe add some really light poles so it can be used anywhere? With lightweight fabrics it would still weigh less than 2 pounds.
    Oh right, because then it would be a lightweight tent and no one needs to pay to learn how to carry a tent and set it up.

    • @coalcracker
      @coalcracker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carl because that’s not what I did. I’ll check out your video on it. Do you only have one hand?

    • @carlbernsen1290
      @carlbernsen1290 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coalcracker Bushcraft Lol, no, what I mean is that an emergency situation can easily come about due to an accident and hands are commonly injured, either during a fall or when using sharp blades. Any shelter strategy which needs two good hands to tie knots and light fires has a serious potential problem.
      Sorry if I came across as rude but I worry that people who don’t know any better might actually pack a little tarp and rely on it for shelter in really bad conditions when their lives might actually be in danger. There’s no way a little open tarp, even an open fronted ploughpoint, offers as much shelter as an enclosed lightweight tent. Ideally the tent should be possible to pitch one handed too, but you can crawl inside a flat tent and be sheltered ok. This basic style is fine for a challenge but it’s definitely not the best gear that people can carry for a real emergency.
