I saw the winning moves by White: the move Bb8 and later Bg3 and Bh4 immediatly, also certainly the moves g2 -g4 + But I have seen ALL studies by Wotawa long, long before. Many of the Wotawa´s studies I have corrected.

Why is only white ever winning?

This is normally usually assumed, as I know. If you say, chess is only strategy and thinking and the factor of luck goes against zero, I ask myself, whether would should always win right away, just because white ist to start in the beginning of each game, or how do you call it, match ? In German we say Partie.

I love puzzles like this because they could happen in a real game. Hence they are far more useful for improving your chess skills than absurd puzzles.

Wotawa´s studies are one of the best studies for grandmaster and super grandmaster to improve their calculation skills. Often these grandmaster solve such chess studies without seeing the board.

I was greatly surprised by the second move of the Bishop! I was thinking about keeping the Bishop somewhere where in could stop the black pawns, not somewhere where it could sacrifice itself!

I saw the mentioned key move, but only on that position, not before, so from the beginning position I was not able to solve it.

Lovely puzzle. I just wish I had been clever enough to see the solution! 😞

It does´nt matter. If you see many, many chess studies and their solution you will find later in chess studies the solution yourself. Because the chess ideas in studies are not always totally new.
