  • Magensium (Mg) is a macro-nutrient your garden vegetables need to thrive. I explain what it does and how you can add it to your garden in both a slow release form (garden lime) and a fast release form (magnesium sulfate/Epsom Salts).

    I have been enjoying the information on fertilizers and how they work. There are not many sources out there explaining "why" I thank you for thinking of it. I have started calling you "Thing" because of the hands in your videos. LOL

    Great video! I appreciate your stressing of less is more when it comes to this. Since I'm mostly gardening with compost that turned out really well, and transplanted most of our plants and added azomite rock dust and have had great results already, I think I may do a soil test soon, and possibly add small amounts of macro-nutrients over time while building our soil over this next year.

    I haven't really used Epsom Salts much, but, I do use Garden Lime in many of my containers. For several years, I played with a pine bark based mix, and it really needed the lime for the ph bump as well as the Mg. Never used it on the in-ground garden. Like you said, all that stuff is already there in the beginning and I add organic matter / compost every year, and haven't had a nutrient problem yet. Containers are a whole other world, though. :-)

    I'm watching all your videos. They give me a new look at what I'm doing in my garden. They are well-panned, and I like all the cards with the info ,s to that i can stop the video and write things down. the weakness, is that i wish your hand was not always in the way, and you used a very thin pointer stick in lieu if your hand. Otherwise, excellent job!

    I've used Magnesium Sulfate in my garden for many years. But what about Magnesium Citrate? Would it be beneficial as well?

    Hi Gary! Great video..does dolomite lime have more magnesium?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually dont know for sure. The back of the lime should have the analysis on there for what every type you buy. I think magnesium is pretty well represented on most types. You don't need a lot.

    do magnesium and potasium go hand in hand? if we use epson salt (magnesium sulfate), that will throw off the plants balance of mag and K? Is this where Sul-po-mag comes in?

    I submitted a sample from my garden for a soil test. The test revealed a high level of magnesium. Will this high magnesium interfere with growing vegetables? Should I take some action to bring the magnesium levels down?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually dont know. i would look it up but I dont think there is a way to decrease it but for adding compost and soils to your garden. Ive not heard of magnesium being an issue.

    • @Teofane
      @Teofane 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gary. I've been told to avoid high magnesium fertilizer. But perhaps better composting will take care of any problem (if any).
