  • In this video we are exploring a variation of the iodine clock reaction that can be pretty easily done at home. There are load of different variations out there and I am going to explore another one in the near future.

Nice white background! I really like the demonstration when the solution is stirred - the colour appears suddenly and uniformely. (Some people think that this dark-blue colour appears as quick as a night in Egypt, and that's why this reaction is also known by the name "Egyptian Night")
BTW, I thought that it's I2 that makes a nice blue complex with starch, but apparently I was wrong.

+GamerGuy ephedrine would be hard to do as a total synthesis. It's a stereoisomer of pseudoephedrine (sudafed) but it has a stronger effect as a bronchodilator than pseudoephedrine. It's sold behind the counter along with the Sudafed products. It's marketed as a bronchodilator for mild asthma symptoms. The brands are Bronkaid and Primatine tablets, and the Primatine has a generic. They were all off the market for a while but are now back on the market.
Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are the same molecule it's just that it has 2 chiral centers so you end up with 4 stereoisomers, 2 of which are l- and d-ephedrine and 2 of which are l- and d-pseudoephedrine.
Both ephedrine and pseudoephedrine can be reduced to methamphetamine quite easily (you're just removing the hydroxyl group from the beta carbon and bam! meth) so that's why they're behind the counter and a limit placed on how much you can buy. The limit is actually quite large though. (I'm going off of how the laws are here in Michigan, other states might have stricter laws, and I don't know what the laws are like in Canada or Europe for pseudoephedrine and ephedrine.)
You could extract it from plant sources.

This reaction is something like the Lugols test, it happens because the iodine gets inside of the helicoidal structure of the starch (which is a polysaccharide) , the elemental iodine color is blue , so that's why you get that color

The chemical reaction looks great, and a very fascinating observation of the chemical process through a visual frame! I carefully followed your lecture, and I would like to thank you very much for the education, and I was carried away by creativity to perform such an experiment in my laboratory and it really worked, I am amazed :)
I had to record and share with the audience and people who know me such a magical effect of chemistry. Now I noticed that the reaction is not reversible, so when the solution turns black, that's the end. So I would ask the question, what needs to be improved in this experiment, in order to obtain an oscillatory chemical reaction with several repeating episodes of color changes, using the same substrates and reactants? I would be even more grateful, although since I am a chemist I will do my best to come up with a solution by myself, but in the meantime, please give me some space and time to try on my own, so if you have a solution for the illustrative reaction, write me the recipe on how to make it, or even better post a new video about it? Thanks bye :)

Why vitamin c? Vinegar or any other household acid seems like it should work as well. I haven't tried with the clock reaction, but vinegar definitely makes a black/purple starch/iodine solution turn back into a clear one. Apparently clearing out all of the triiodide. I've yet to try this, but apparently adding a base makes it turn back to a black/purple color. So, it seems it could be used as a base indicator. Which is probably something tons of people already know. I'm just happy to have figured it out.

ONE glass started with all the necessary ingredients to cause the reaction (minus a pipette of other liquid) we were instructed to intermingle our contents with anyone we chose (or not to intermingle with anyone we did not want to) for two minutes then we were all given an STD "test kit" (the pipette) we were told only one person started with the STD, and if this pipette causes your liquid to change color, you were infected. Class of 40 students, two stayed clear.

Maybe you'll answer what I'm noy able to find - why iodine ions are colorless?

    • @SuperBiba1234
      @SuperBiba1234 5 ปีที่แล้ว

The only ions which are colorless tend to be ions of transition metals, because the way that electrons move around within the transition metal ion electron shells causes energy to be emitted in the form of colored light. The movement of electrons in non transition metal ions doesn’t do the same thing with the colored light and iodine is not a transition metal, so iodide ions are colorless.

I'm having a moment of deja-vu here...I can't remember if it was a short story, or a plot device in a book, but when I was younger I read some kind of mystery. In order to catch the culprit red handed, they added something to a doorknob I believe, and somehow got a second something onto the suspect's hands. When that individual ended up touching the doorknob, the two components mixed, and some time later caused a reaction. The resulting effect was that the suspect's hand had been dyed with a dark color, similar to your experiment here, allowing the protagonists to identify who had touched the doorknob.
So, my question, is it possible to use solutions A and B to set up something similar, and would it dye someone's skin for long enough to identify them? Or did the author take this reaction and build off of the actual science of it for something like science fiction?

Those chemicals are found in the body, I'm wondering if a similar reaction dose occur in biology.
Thyroid hormones, glucose and vitemin c and peroxide production from the cells

Hydrogen peroxide is a reactive oxygen species, ascorbic acid is an antioxidant. Living tissue maintains an antioxidant buffer and if it were to run out that would mean the tissue is in bad shape.
That said, human tissue can alter the prevaing oxidation state to fight an infection - the snot-green enzyme myeloperoxidase uses hydrogen peroxide to synthesize hypochlorous acid and literally bleach pathogens.
Hypochlorous acid is too strong to be medically useful, but iodine is less reactive and actually used for wound cleaning. The stuff you get in a drugstore usually isn't sterile and is only intended for superficial cleaning, but sterile povidone iodine is sometimes used for deep wounds or during surgery.
Iodine is very well tolerated - doesn't burn like the lighter halogens - and the biggest medical concern is elevated iodine levels that can interfere with thyroid activity. And it's an oxidizer and it wouldn't be good to have it in your body constantly.
Oh, one last gross bid of household chemistry. The myeloperoxidase in pus or angry sinus-infected snot can be detected by exposing it to household grade peroxide. It makes a faint but nasty bleach odor.

I did this for a project in 8th grade but I'm pretty sure I measured the cornstarch wrong and low-key screwed up the reaction time. Also, I now realize that sink water probably wasn't helping me either lol.

Does anyone know how to change the dark blue back to clear? I saw a demonstration where another liquid is added after the iodine clock reaction and the water turned back to clear. I can't figure out what liquid it was.

What's going on here is that the oxidizer and the reducer are competing to do their particular magic to the iodine. In the end, it's a numbers game -- whichever solution is more abundant will win. If there is more reducer, the final solution will be clear. If there is more oxidizer, it will be dark. So, if you want to clarify it after, add more of solution A.

I hope you didn't leave that dark solution inside that Coke bottle unsupervised ;> Someone could take it for a real Coke and drink it accidentally :q
I have a question though. Two, actually:
    1. Does it react only with ascorbic acid but not citric acid? Because I wonder if it could be used to tell apart ascorbic acid from citric acid? (they're both acidic, and they have pretty similar properties)
    2. What is the role of that starch in this reaction?
