One of the questions I try to remember to ask myself is: "if I had this deck in my collection right now, would I go use it?" If the answer is "eh," I wouldn't stop watching TV or watching TH-cam tarot walkthroughs, then probably I don't really want the deck, I just want to buy something, I'm just caught up in the hype.
Absolutely love this conversation. I had a very tight budget for several years, which made it easier to say no...if I couldn't afford it, that was that. My financial situation has evolved for the better this year and now it's so much harder for me to say no to things that I wouldn't have any trouble saying no to before. I'm going to print out Peggy's guide and make a point to ask myself these questions before hitting "buy".
Another consideration for me is sets or series of decks. I am a collector (about 150 tarot and 50 oracle decks and counting). There are some series, such as Seasons of the Witch, where not having all 8 just hurts me until it's complete. (Where are you, Ostara?!) OTOH, there are some creators that I mostly love and want to support, but I just don't resonate with one of their decks. I have become slightly less OCD about this so I can actually say no to that one, with some effort. Although I still worry that I might want to sell or trade to another collector who wants every single deck or book by a particular creator.
So I received an email on Thursday saying my Unicorns Journey decks shipped and woukd arrive on the 15th. I came home from visiting My dad in the hospital and the package was sitting on my step. These came really fast. ❤ I absolutely love them.
That video hit home for me! ❤ I am a passionate collector of many things - tarot decks, incense, vintage books, Doctor Who action figures... and I love my collections so, so much. ❤ Thing is, I'm planning to buy my own house in the next two or three years, and I don't want to accumulate any more stuff before the big move. Besides, I've found that I don't appreciate my individual things as much as I'd like to, because some collections are becoming a bit too big. I'm trying to be much more mindful about what I bring in these days. What really helps me is - give it 24 hrs. Often I'll come back the next day and I'll find that I already have something similar, or that I was just having a Squee!-moment or FOMO and I don't actually need it. Research is also very important. My first 3 decks I bought off of recommendations from TH-camrs or Bloggers, and guess what. I never connected with them! I've since researched every consequent one I bought and I haven't regretted a purchase since. ☺
I was just watching gardening videos and all of a sudden my phone was like immediately shuffled into this. Time to grab some coffee and settle in. The algorithm knows me. ❤
I've kept these concepts in mind with purchasing decks ever since the guide was released. I may not go through the entire process every purchase, but the general gist of it has guided my deck purchases for a while now. It's really helped me to be mindful with my deck purchasing. I typically now don't pre-order, with the exception of the rare few Kickstarters. I wait and watch walk throughs before I purchase most decks. Or at least if I can see the artwork before purchasing somehow. My budget is somewhat limited. I also try to be mindful about if I'll actually use a deck, especially right out of the box. I also prefer to work with Tarot and Oracle deck pairs, so that's a criteria I consider when purchasing. Will I be able to pair this deck with something I already have or another deck I can purchase at the same time? That's something that's pretty important to me personally, because of how I typically work with my cards in my practice. It's not an absolute requirement, but definitely an important consideration for me. I will say that I did back Lisa's deck primarily to support her work. I'm not totally sure how often I'll read with the Unicorn's Journey Tarot, but I wanted to support Lisa and have the deck as a part of my collection. ❤ I'm excited about Sassy Dragons for the same reason. And I'll definitely be backing the Unicorn's Journey Oracle when it becomes available also. Sometimes, I want to support a deck creator, even if at the time I'm not totally sure how often I'll use their deck. And I'm completely fine with collecting decks for that purpose. I JUST got my shipping email for Unicorn's Journey Tarot and I can't wait to get it!!
Love this! It's really easy to get caught in the consumerism spiral. I'm glad more people are talking about thoughtful spending and minding your budget in a way that's not shameful 😊.
Exactly, I don't do unicorns/faeries/mermaids et al. Just not my jam. I just cannot connect with decks like that. I wanted to support Lisa but at the same time... I couldn't afford a deck I knew I wouldn't ever use. I use all my decks, they work for me. So, decks that I cannot use I just cannot afford to invest in. How does it fit into my practice is a crucial question to ask yourself.
Thank you. I love your take on this. I also have to say, y'all are so ADHD. Lisa, bless you. I thought you were alpha ADHD until this video. Peggy is so much more so. You have to so fight to complete a thought. As a seriously ADHD person, y'all are so an example of my intimate relationships with non-ADHD people. Thank the Divine, ADHD people are generally so awesome - fun, loving, interesting, loyal, creative, yada yada - that we're worth the conversational challenges. 😂❤❤
@@Lisa_Papez And I’m here for it. The way y’all have adapted to, and thrived, from being with each other makes me teary. She’s the yin to your yang. I’m really happy for y’all. ❤️
I've decided that I can only have tarot decks in one drawer in one of my mini chest of drawers. Now, I can fit one more deck, so I have to be careful with choosing the last deck.
I wanted to back Lisa’s Unicorns Journey Tarot but I knew I couldn’t because I recently retired and wasn’t sure what my budget is. I was disappointed. But I am glad i didn’t as I haven’t gotten my retirement check yet and it has been 3 months.
Because of budget I veeeery rarely by indie decks (three trees tarot making this really hard), bc more expensive, shipping, tax etc. etc. But bc I don't want my collection to get too large (it being about 60 tarot and 15 oracle decks right now) even with mass market decks, I usually put them on my private wishlist and there they often stay for weeks or even months. And thanks to Lisa and Peggy I also do the "What in my collection scratches the itch" thingy...
i absolutely LOVE peggy she rocks. AND OF COURSE MY LOVE FOR LISA is there feeling this with you. I dont want to go through this but my many decks need trimmed as get rid of (I say that loosely, i like all my decks). LOVE TO ALL~M`

Peggy I need help! I have the orisma visions and cosma visions mini and the big book. I want the mirror visions which is both decks in one using the ventricular plastic that switches between 2 pictures from the 80s.... it's $100 and I don't need it but the eeeew factor has been the same massive level for months. I don't find a need for the ones I have very often at all at all but I want it cause the eeew. Please help 🙏 😊
You need to ask yourself why you still have the first two even though you don't use them. Unless you're into collecting, you're going to end up with regrets instead of a deck you'll actually use.
@ppapez I got the cosma visions spasifically for past lives reading which I just don't do very often and I got the big book because the mini doesn't come with a book and I got the prisma because it's in the book and finishes the set. The mirror visions would not fill any need other than novelty and collection especially since I cannot get anyone to riffle shuffle it on camera so I think maybe it will harm the deck to do so 🤔
You already have the same cards and book. Sounds like your only reason to have it is to collect. If you're not a collector then this isn't a deck you should get. If you are a collector then double check your budget ( I always say that lol), and make sure you're ok with the idea that you probably won't ever use it. It seems like your biggest issue is knowing that you won't use the deck because you're afraid of damaging it. I doubt you could harm it. But it's not my money or my risk.
@ppapez that's true and I'm usually pretty good at looking outside the box for ways to use a deck just for an excuse to get it but if I can't riffle shuffle it probably won't get used. 😕
@@rebeccarodger2636 yeah sounds like a pass to me. Maybe down the road if you end up doing more past life work and need to replace your current decks but definitely not right now
I enjoyed this and listening to you two! What would Peggy say to someone you follow comes out with a deck and you want to support them but the deck itself just isn’t your vibe?
You can support anyone and anything without spending money. Like I said in this video - Lisa's deck isn't my vibe. But I supported her in every other way I could while she created it and happily recommend it to anyone whose vibe does work with the deck. Sometimes the best cheerleader is the person who can say "this doesn't work for me, but I'm sure it will work for you."
A big thing for me is that when I get something like a deck I like my brain decides if I like something they make I HAVE to like ALL their decks/books etc. and I have to remind myself that I don’t. Granted I’m a bit more of a collector, but even then.
@@Lisa_Papez It’s easy to do. I have a few decks I’m like “I want” but I’m bring good because I’m not financially stable right now. But some are from creators I love so it’s sad, but… oh well. I do wish I had ways to exchange or sell decks that I didn’t bond with. A video on that.

Also, you can back a Kickstarter for $1 to support creator without breaking bank or getting something you won't use.
