  • Asked how to face up to life's difficulties and not turn to alcohol for escape, St Josemaria recommended turning to God, "an all-powerful Father".
Listen, you know how happy we Christians are, but because of life's difficulties we lose that happiness. Many of us men turn to alcohol, drink, thinking that we'll get back the joy we lost. Could you tell me, please, what should we turn to for happiness, as good Christians?
Listen, my son, if life's difficulties mean you have to turn to drink, then I would have thousands of litres inside this cassock... because I've met so many difficulties, many more than you can imagine, and I thank God our Lord for it.
When we meet difficulties, we go to the Master, to the Lord who is all-powerful and, still better, we go through his Mother. Go through St Joseph, who was his foster-father, he stood in for our Lord's father on earth.
And we present him with our difficulties, we open our hearts in Confession. And also, we go to a good friend in one of these Centres, to whom we also open up our souls a bit, and we come out resolved, yes! -- to stop drinking and be cheerful instead, by God's grace. The difficulties don't count.
You see the Andes there? They are crumbling away, it's such a shame! Well, difficulties crumble away much faster, if we turn to our Lord. Everything is smoothed out, becomes a plain.
Go for it, my son! There's no excuse for... No excuse for that.
It's a fact, there's no excuse, but right now, I do excuse it. But you have to make the resolution to advise your friends to leave off that method, which is out of date, right?
I can suggest a system that goes back much further: talking to God, because God is our Father, and not just any father, but an all-powerful Father. With him, difficulties melt away.
I have a little experience, because I'm just that much older than you, a little, not much. And because I know so many souls, so very many. I am in the fiftieth year of my priesthood. Through these hands, sinful, but consecrated, have passed thousands and thousands of souls, and I know about all those sufferings and all those glories, all those difficulties and all those victories, and I can tell you that alcohol isn't the way. The way is to come closer to God, and to face up, honestly, sincerely, to the difficulties. And you conquer them!
