The dream sequence was just that a dream, a concussion response actually. He dropped the rosary in the water. So he wouldnt have had it as a old man. Blackthorne never left Japan. He was "broken" as Toranaga eluded to in ep 4 or 5 when explaining using hawks to hunt and the parallels to men.

It was not a dream of an old man of his younger days. It was a younger man's dream of what his old age could have been (holding that cross)

People were like wheres the big battle. To me winning a war without shedding blood is more satisfying. It's pure genius. I think that's what they highlight by mentioning Toranaga's lineage. He's an elite. Comes from elite Samurai, warlords, strategists.

...well there was allot of blood along the way - strategic blood - not tactical - and I agree it was amazing!

The line that Toranaga says before Yabushige's death, "Why tell a dead man the future?" is exactly the same line that Yabushige said to his nephew in the beginning of the series. Yabushige was referring to Toranaga though, when he was planning on keeping the cannons/guns from the Anjin's ship. Toranaga said the line right before Yabushige died to reveal to him that he knew where his loyalties were all along.

Anjin never returns to England. When he attempted seppuku he was reborn, this was why there was a flashback to his dream and timeline. His earlier dream was to return to England. Now he has embraced being there. When he puts Mariko's rosary into the water, he has let go of the past and focuses on the new, unknown future. The Dream of a Dream....
In the book, when he attempts seppuku (in a different scene and time), he is reborn a true samurai and hatamoto in reality, not just in name.

So glad you enjoyed this masterpiece of a show! So many callbacks in this episode, and such beautiful writing! Loved the scene of John and Fuji scattering the ashes, it was so moving - and Mariko bargaining for John's life was so her! Great reactions, as always!

Being able to say "I sent a woman to do a job an army never could" and having it being a noncontroversial statement in 2024 is the most remarkable achievement of the show. Because it makes total sense.

So many call backs - Saying pissing into the wind on the banks when pulling in the ship - Yabushigi said that when speaking to John then Buntaro shows up - This time John says it and then soon Buntaro shows up - but the outcomes are different - this is great writing what a show!!

Nooo you didn't cut away during the poem?! to ask for "subscriptions"?! That's the last way to get them?! 🤭 It is so beautiful and layered! "Flowers are only flowers because they fall, but thankfully the wind".
It's a mixture: Flowers are only flowers because they fall - A callback to Mariko talking about "We live and we die" - but then Lady Ochiba added "But thankfully the wind" to point out how much longer Mariko came in life, than she was "supposed" to... That's what we call a f*ck up 😅😜 On your part...

you would love the book too I think. The show doesn't reproduce it exactly but it does reproduce its wishes in spades. The book was such an eye-opener for me as a teenager and it was up there with the like of Asimov, Tolkien and other novels that can re-shape your thinking for the better.

The most important part of a ship like that is the keel. Which was protected, along with many ribs of the ship, by being underwater. So the ship can be rebuilt.
In reality, William Adams, on who John Blackthorne is based, did indeed stay in Japan and serve Toranaga/Tokugawa. He built at least two ships for the Shogun, and sailed to Macau and elsewhere on business for him.
