The drop in feature would be awesome for connecting with the elderly with emerging dementia! Folks with aging parents might find this a godsend. I'll have to check this out.
People keep using the word "creepy" to describe the drop in function but they are misunderstanding it's purpose. Show was also designed to be an in home video intercom system. The drop in feature makes it so you can access a room with out having to have a person answer or to peek at a wireless camera like ring, or arlo. I own 4 echo shows 1 in the kitchen, master bedroom, and both my kids bedrooms. We can now use drop in to call them downstairs for dinner, or to get there attention without having to scream at the top of your lungs., or send a text or call to them in our own house. In the Alexa app there is a choice to only allow drop in for your own house hold but it can also be used by relatives to check on a elderly parent etc. I think it's working excellent so far, my kids can listen to all the music they want and watch TH-cam and we get to have a simple effective futuristic space intercom system in our fully automated smart home. WIN WIN...
Ok, that's great and one side of the coin. What if you're having a private convo or doing something you don't want your kids or anybody popn in on. Is there a way to shut that feature off?
I’ve bought one of these in a sale and I have to say it’s the best model of amazon echo out there. I’ve pretty much got them all and this one is the best so far. The camera a bit pointless , I’ve never used it. Great product.
true but it could be programmed to pick up universal signs such as "time", "weather", etc. it probably wouldn't work by signing full sentences as if in a conversation but it could at least recognize basic signs.
That would be a whole other programming gamut by the developers to code for visual spatial motion signals. This was my thought exactly as well-- how can the Deaf use it? And believe me, when technology is developed, Deaf people are usually an afterthought.
To all those haters that are like WHY.... We use Alexa, echo Dot and the show. This is useful if you are already using the other devices. We have them in kids rooms, (alarms that I manage remotely, stories, music), we have it in the kitchen, in the office, basement... It makes it very easy to communicate around the house, and also spy on your kids while say you have you hands covered in raw meat cooking dinner and your 5 year old is trying to sneak watch TH-cam Minecraft with ak47 videos because he knows your cooking. But the show is awesome because now I can SEE the kids not just hear them. Security camera in babies room? I can not only watch from my show, but if there's a baby sitter I can drop in from my phone and see what's going on. The thing is cheaper than most video baby monitors and its high def (most baby monitors are not) and I can tap into it from anywhere. Just that alone makes it worth it. Why not an iPad? Simple.. I can't intercom by voice with iPad, I can't tell it to place music from the other side of the house, I can't control my lights or thermostat. You may say sure, who really needs that, but once you have it there's no going back. And a bonus, these things are made pretty solid. I keep one in our camper and I forgot about it one trip and it fell off the cabinet and rolled around for two hrs during travel and there's nothing wrong with it! Do that with an iPad! I was looking for more info on the more advanced features in this video, like home thermometer controls and camera sync, possibly additional features I may not be aware of because we use this soo much!... moving on to other vids.
I would greatly appreciate you guys not installing skills on my Echo in the future. I watched this review on my TV, and thanks to the video I now have a recipe skill on my Echo.
They should drop the Amazon Echo to $129.99 and the Show should be $179.99 (or even lower). At the current price I feel like its getting closer to an iPad price. I can do all the same things and more, plus its portable if I want it to be and less blocky. Too pricy for me.
Why do I remember that the first song in this video was also used in the video where TheVerge went to Google to get a hands-on and interview of the Nexus 4/Nexus 10.
That drop feature sure is Creepy! Another tool for the NSA to use on you,Plus what if I'm walking around naked? Will someone just spy on me and say nothing?!
And as if the NSA isn't/hasn't already tapped millions of "spy's in everyone's pocket" - (a.k.a, your smart phone). That has a camera, travels everywhere with everyone, and likely is even taken into the bathroom with millions of people.
I never understand why people complain about Echo products being government spyware whilst they all walk around with phones and use computers. Your privacy is already compromised unless you're some master hacker or completely off the grid
Raphael Insigne Well, Apple is continually developing their Ecosystem, and its a software update away if needed. I don't have confidence yet inAmazon's software development, plus there are tons of 3rd party accessories for iPads. Also what if you want to move the device from by the counter, to by your stone so you can read the recipes? You would have to power it off, since I assume theres jo battery, and I doubt there are ruggedized cases for such a thing, or at the very least a Ziplock bag you can put it in.
This has better microphones. 8 of them. So better for voice. But yeah, if money is no object then an iPad would be better. This looks like something from Amstrad in the 1980’s. Doesnt blend in to the home.
Just got mine and so far I really like it. I am looking forward to more apps being developed for this device. BTW, when you gave your Alexa commands, mine responded. The chocolate chip cookie recipes looked great!
honestly I think these home assistants are ahead of their time... I don't think they'll take off now but they will eventually be in all of our homes in the next twenty years
I’ve been using Amazon echo for a few hours now and it is very limited in terms of where It can go. The idea seems great, but it does not integrate with anything other than its own systems such as Amazon music and Amazon phone applications. It cannot use Gmail because that would be Google. Unless it’s versatile, it’s used will be limited
Just bought 2 shows before reading all these negative comments 🤧 went to get a spot and a show , but at the same price of 129, went for 2 shows. Like that you can see who’s at your door without reaching fir the phone. Does it have all the bells n whistles? No but it cost 129, not 600.
Its perfect for old people and young kids - a lot of us live on the other side of the world to our parents, my kids and my parents both have tablets and still never talk to each other on skype or FaceTime, they still wait for me to do it. With something like this, it opens up to these sorts of people and makes things so much easier.
We bought mom, age 92, a Kindle Fire so she could continue "reading" via Audible (she was an avid reader but quit when her eyesight failed), but she never took to it. Too complicated. The Show just might be simple enough for her.
What do you think about the Lenovo Smart Display with Google assistant in comparison with this? I mean the Lenovo Smart Display works perfectly fine for me, and the features they offer with the price they are selling it for, makes it totally worth it. Love how life changing the features are. The built in speakers for the lenovo smart display works just as good as my harman/kardon speakers.
I muted the echo sitting next to me, but this video still managed to activate the All Recipes skill via my echo in the kitchen on the other end of the house.
I'm an android guy myself but I can see this working for those who don't want or have time to do all the work involved. Like a mom with her hands full making dinner in the kitchen but wants to have hand off for recipes music and maybe a movie or 2. Just sayin
Great review, unfortunately I feel this device won't appeal to anyone.... the only new feature I need still from amazon is the ability to connect my echo to my fire stick!
I like the video aspect of this assistant, however I already have a Google Home and I'm reluctant to pay over $200 for another one. I might wait to see if Google will unveil their version of Google Home with video and without that drop in feature which lessens your privacy.
You can drop in on any other Echo Show Device without the persons permission? What if a pervert finds your device and drops in on you or a thief finds you device and can see when you are not home and break into your house? Can you set the screen to time out so at night it won't keep you up with it always being lit up?
honestly with all the hate im seeing, the echo is one of the best iv seen i have mine controlling everything from my tv to my kettle to my shower to my PC opening apps and games all just saying Alexa. Basically a real life cortana just trying to make a hologram now :P the future is bright
bet you amazon was like fudge apple is gonna put a screen to outsell the echo. After WWDC, amazon was like well fudge they wasted our time damn you Phil.
A echo show is like slicing donuts, totally unnecessary.
Cai Canyu 😂
Cai Canyu maybe the donut slicing scene is a very low key subtle way to say how unnecessary this was
Cai Canyu lmao 😂
The Google Device is much better
Did he just cut a donut into 4 slices ....
Mostafa Hamdy Bruh, I know....wtf?
same thing i was asking myself...lol.
Mostafa Hamdy yep so metrosexual
Yeah, that's not normal. 10 bucks says this guy has some dead bodies in his attic.
One of those people who eat french fries and pizza with a fork I bet.
The drop in feature would be awesome for connecting with the elderly with emerging dementia! Folks with aging parents might find this a godsend. I'll have to check this out.
The drop in feature is prefect for taking care of grandparents.
People keep using the word "creepy" to describe the drop in function but they are misunderstanding it's purpose. Show was also designed to be an in home video intercom system. but seriously... who cuts a doughnut?
Obsessive hipsters is who.
"but seriously... who cuts a doughnut"
said by a fat person...
Mustark Shahreya somebody who wants only half a doughnut ?!
😂😂😂😂
I’ve bought one of these in a sale and I have to say it’s the best model of amazon echo out there. I’ve pretty much got them all and this one is the best so far. The camera a bit pointless , I’ve never used it. Great product.
This would be a cool device for the Deaf if the camera could be programmed to interpret sign language
Rikkaboy would be hard tho cuz sign language has plenty of improvisation
true but it could be programmed to pick up universal signs such as "time", "weather", etc. it probably wouldn't work by signing full sentences as if in a conversation but it could at least recognize basic signs.

Don't watch this with your echo in the same room. It triggered mine like 6 times during the video 😂
This thing will become really interesting when it gets AI that can totally simulate a real person. Something like a virtual head on the display.
To all those haters that are like WHY.... We use Alexa, echo Dot and the show. This is useful if you are already using the other devices. Amazon, bring back 1990 with landlines.
Geo Neo
They do have a device that integrates your echos with landlines.
I would greatly appreciate you guys not installing skills on my Echo in the future. I watched this review on my TV, and thanks to the video I now have a recipe skill on my Echo.
Too bad it looks like a 2002 projector tv.
louis callewaert
Lol
Ha, it does.
Bahaha 😂

cool ...does it work in CAR with hot spot or bluetooth ...??
I just found one at the thrift store for 20 bucks, trying to decide if i should keep it or resell.
Looks pretty cool. Its definetely the start of something that will be the norm in the future! Digital home assistants.
Why do I remember that the first song in this video was also used in the video where TheVerge went to Google to get a hands-on and interview of the Nexus 4/Nexus 10.
That drop feature sure is Creepy!
Another tool for the NSA to use on you,Plus what if I'm walking around naked?
Will someone just spy on me and say nothing?!
hb0x loooool ur ding dong
The NSA could care less what you do. Why would they spy on you of all people?
And as if the NSA isn't/hasn't already tapped millions of "spy's in everyone's pocket" - (a.k.a, your smart phone). That has a camera, travels everywhere with everyone, and likely is even taken into the bathroom with millions of people.
ffs don't activate the drop feature then. It's a choice.
I never understand why people complain about Echo products being government spyware whilst they all walk around with phones and use computers. Your privacy is already compromised unless you're some master hacker or completely off the grid
It's better to get an iPad and stick it to the wall!! 😛
SauMik Pal more expensive tho and Siri is less advanced than Alexa
You'd have to get up and lift a finger. That's not the future. We'll be glued to our couch.
Raphael Insigne Well, Apple is continually developing their Ecosystem, and its a software update away if needed. I don't have confidence yet inAmazon's software development, plus there are tons of 3rd party accessories for iPads.

This has better microphones. 8 of them. So better for voice. But yeah, if money is no object then an iPad would be better. This looks like something from Amstrad in the 1980’s. Doesnt blend in to the home.
Integration with security camera smart devices is a welcome benefit of having the screen.
Or I could use my phone?
Just got mine and so far I really like it. I am looking forward to more apps being developed for this device. BTW, when you gave your Alexa commands, mine responded. The chocolate chip cookie recipes looked great!
Know who could care less about the new Echo? Your cat.
Joseph Akbrud
So the cat does care at least a little?
Can you look at your ebooks that you purchase on amazon?
Very well reviewed. Its an interesting product but still in early phase of development. It would only become more smarter in future models.
honestly I think these home assistants are ahead of their time... I don't think they'll take off now but they will eventually be in all of our homes in the next twenty years
2023 and most people have an alexa or bixby in their homes now, with everything in the house connected to them
I’ve been using Amazon echo for a few hours now and it is very limited in terms of where It can go. This was a super interesting review. I loved the conversation/demonstration between Dieter and Dan.
The design looks like it came right out of the 80's
The sheer amount of Trek references in this video makes me happy. I’ll stick with my Dot, but it’s cool.
You guys ever gonna make a verge app
Slicing the donut is oddly satisfying 🤔 😜
Is Alexa a service you have to pay for? Also can you Bluetooth an iPhone to this Echo Show?
I'm not so into the whole Amazon show stuff but this would be great for Ann alarm clock since the 1st gen is so cheap!
Just bought 2 shows before reading all these negative comments 🤧 went to get a spot and a show , but at the same price of 129, went for 2 shows. Like that you can see who’s at your door without reaching fir the phone. Does it have all the bells n whistles? No but it cost 129, not 600.
Wouldn't a Amazon Fire tablet running the Alexa app do most of this (if not all)
Regarding 'drop it' do you need 2 of these echo show devices to make that work? ty
Can this be plugged into a 240 volt socket?
Black and White? It looks like color to me? Do you have a different one than the one you are speaking of?
You just made me install the chocolate cookies skill... thanks
This Device support the Home Automation yes or not ?
I want to use it with security cameras like an Arlo or Ring. I have heard you can do that. Have you tried using it with either of these cameras?
outbackeddie there are other reviews on TH-cam that show that
Can you limit the people that can use drop in?
That drop in service! I'm going to get this to help us keep an eye on an elderly relative!
Battery Exhausted banos
You can get one on Amazon for $129.99 with a few scratches but it works great.
does the video chat work for echos that are not inside the united states?
Can we connect other Bluetooth devices?
Your boss' life goal amuses me
So why wouldn't you just get a tablet instead of this?...
Christian Pak bc Alexa is more advanced than Siri

Anyone knows whats the sound track being played in this review? The Verge used it before, I couldn't find it...
I muted the echo sitting next to me, but this video still managed to activate the All Recipes skill via my echo in the kitchen on the other end of the house.
LOL at the doughnut cutting... I was like
Is it ring compatible?
It looks like a tiny version of those really big, early 2000s TVs.
Perfect for screening cooking instruction videos in kitchen , while you follow along. :)
SONY DASH, 10 years ago.
You call that a sharp image?
Screw the echo.. Did you just cut a donought using a knife??
Why did they add a donut being cut at 1:30?
It probably sends video to Amazon as well
Can this connect with echo spot for drop in
Terok Nor? Your trekkie is showing. And that's perfectly fine.
Discovery news and trailer, WiFi named Terok Nor, and a cat named Dax. Benjamin approves.
The dropit feature is kinda like it is in the movies
Idk why but the picture of my screen on Alexa is yellowish and the detail is yellow. How do I fix that??
Echo Show in a nutshell - Alexa on a different OS stuck in a Amazon Fire 7
does it have usb?
I'm an android guy myself but I can see this working for those who don't want or have time to do all the work involved. Like a mom with her hands full making dinner in the kitchen but wants to have hand off for recipes music and maybe a movie or 2. Just sayin
Good video. There were lots of pointless comments about Dan’s sexuality and donuts, but I think this was a good, quick review. Thanks.
Great work on the review!
What can you do with this, that you can't do with a phone?
And why would I want to use this instead of a tablet? You can take your tablet anywhere, this needs to be plugged in to work.
Great review, unfortunately I feel this device won't appeal to anyone.... the only new feature I need still from amazon is the ability to connect my echo to my fire stick!
The cat at the end was worth it.
0:39 how did those artifacts make it through to production?
If it doesn’t already have it, they should add their digital Dash buttons.
Nice DS9 Reference!
I like the video aspect of this assistant, however I already have a Google Home and I'm reluctant to pay over $200 for another one. I might wait to see if Google will unveil their version of Google Home with video and without that drop in feature which lessens your privacy.
how is this different than a fire hd tablet?
its nice but seems kinda limited.
Points for having a network named Terok Nor. Negative points for misspelling it, though. :)
You can drop in on any other Echo Show Device without the persons permission? What if a pervert finds your device and drops in on you or a thief finds you device and can see when you are not home and break into your house?
Can you set the screen to time out so at night it won't keep you up with it always being lit up?

Great review- Thanks guys!!
1:08 did anyone see that the light on the screen is pointing towards him?
Cats have their own swag!
Is there a Google equivalent device with a screen?
Tape solves your NSA fears
It's so thick 😳
That's what she said...
Of course it is, so are the people selling it.
succ
I think that makes it look cool. Kinda retro-futuristic or Star Trekky. I think it was inspired by Star Trek.
Mikael Murstam it looks like its from the 80s lol
His wifi is Terok Nor and his cat's name is Dax. I wonder if he's a DS9 fan. Lol
can't a phone everything it can?
The biggest problem of Amazon products is most consumer services are limited only to North America only.
Soooooo it's a tablet with less options for more money?
I'm good, I have too many devices that have cameras already. Yeah, I'm talking to you, NSA!
This will be great for old people who have troubles with their laptops and Skype. Pretty niche though.
bet you amazon was like fudge apple is gonna put a screen to outsell the echo. After WWDC, amazon was like well fudge they wasted our time damn you Phil.
