Been using my packout stack working as a mechanic for about 3-4 months now. Never had an issue with anything! Now I cannot wait to build the table work top!!!
I've found that if you put your tap in a bit holder instead of directly chucked into your drill, it gives you a little slop, which helps diminish the chance that you'll make it go "tink". It was fun watching someone else break a tap for once.
I’m just starting as a millwright, and so far, I really like it. No issues with the 3 drawer and rolls into the cage without any issues. I have sockets, wrenches, and heavy hammers. Oh, and the drawers are lockable. The bar swings up and clips in and I padlock it.
I’m a heavy equipment mechanic and they work great for me I have 5 of those packout drawers I highly recommend packout drawers as an addition to a full tool box . These things work great if you run a service truck as well . I can lock them on to my service truck a drop them off at the shop if I don’t need the tools in a particular packout . It’s also a lot cheaper than buying another tool box .
All you have to do is put in a metal or plywood bottom (something ridgid) liner if you don't want the drawer to belly.... then you can Load her up all you want
For the cost of these things, I’d prob just get a normal metal cabinet. But I do like these! Can get much more usage/space out of a metal cab for same price. But great idea though!
Also u can use self tapping 1/4 20s instead of drill and tap. I use them on iron beams and they work great. They made by Dottie and sold at electrical wholesale houses.
I’ve got a bunch of these packout boxes and you can put a lot of weight in them.. more than I think you are giving it credit for… it’s not steel,, but pretty good… I’m more than happy with mine
Im thinking about doing something like this for a mobile finishing workspace. I do trim carpentry, so something like this to put my tools on and move to the next door or window or whatever would be quite nice.

Dang Dan.. you beat me to it. I was building a similar mod. Yours looks really nice bro. Your take is uniquely cool, love how you cut the top. I was going to use finished wood. Dude Congrats 👏 👏 very well done.

I am also 100% sure when a little inch annuity someone will customize a DeWalt tough system I have idea of myself I just don't feel like implementing them don't have a need for them but you could probably add a corn Ravel for your extension cord maybe some kind of modification at a tool bag like a smaller style crate
I was thinking with the sides, use the new pack out half plates instead the dolly, $19, maybe put a piece of play wood underneath for support, but yes it could be a really good set up, I’m a plumber apprentice and I work on new construction projects, this would be really good set up with the packout top clear boxes for fittings.

As a multi-tradesman, can confirm, not for mechanics, so pretty will be instantly greasy and black, but it works great for transporting tools to various job sites as long as you configure your loading correctly.
You might be a mechanic by trade but you are one hell of a carpenter and Jack of all trades! Very well done man! And those Diablo steel demon blades work great! I have the same saw and it runs that blade awesome. Very impressive all around. Plus I like all the tool companies you use. Bonus points on using many brands! 🍻🍻🍻
I like using a m12 impact on low setting for those tap jobs. not enough torque to snap them. just back it off and go again if it gets stuck. no need to even pre-drill with those drill/tap combo bits.
I’m a heavy equipment mechanic any time my service truck is down for major repairs I run packout system with all my essentials obviously big hammers and pry bars breaker bars you need to get some accessories to hold them but as far as power tools , hand tools sockets wrenches pliers etc picks screw drivers I can carry almost all I need for 90% of jobs with a 3 drawer 2 drawer for the deeper sockets and hammers etc … a clear top organizer for consumables and a bottom wheel large box for battery tools works great yes it can work for mechanics not as your main box though
" Is it good for a Mechanic, is it good for a Mechanic.?" 🤣 I'd say it depends on what type of Mechanic. Automotive/Truck where you don't need to move your box out of your work space, probably not. But if you need to move around a lot, Yup. I've done Heavy Trucks, Automotive, and Railroad type work, never needed to move my Snap-On out of the building. Currently I'm doing Forklift maintenance/repair, needed something I could roll around to where the equipment quits running. The Packout moves like a furniture cart, I've had to break it down to load in the truck, roll it up to loading docks, taken elevators with it, climbed stairs, sometimes walking up to a quarter mile through tunnels/halls. There's other brands as well, but this type of box works well for this type of work.
I see you used a circular saw to cut metal. Does it have to be a "metal cutting saw" or can it just be a regular circular saw with a metal cutting blade?
There’s lots of metal blades out there that will fit your saw. Diablo makes a lot of them, even some for aluminum. The saws that are specifically made for metal contain the shavings better and are a little slower for a better cut. If you use them on any type normal saw, keep in mind, you’ll have metal shavings everywhere, the blade spins faster with less blade life, and more poor of a cut.
It's out of the system now so don't panic but just so you know in the future, if you're wanting to block out the addresses on a shipping label, you need to block out the barcode too. It's like going out of town and locking your front door but leaving the back door open. Been a year since you posted so I'm curious what type of a store had the tops on clearance. Those are very much not on clearance at HD and they're selling like hotcakes since they also left their backdoor open and show you their inventory levels at the warehouse.
After seeing a few of the modifications. It sure would be nice if Milwaukee made these foldable end shelves available for sale in stores. If anyone has seen the setup for sale? Please let us know
Mechanic here, I wouldn’t listen to an engineer’s advice! I’ve been throwing wrenches across the shop for over two decades because of some stupid engineer’s design on a car! 😂😂😂
you learned this the hard way, but the drill/tap combo bits only work properly with thin stock, like where the material thickness is 1/3 the diameter of the bit. Anything more than that and you're rolling the dice on breakage and better to use a traditional tap.
What installation driver are you talking about for those pieces? I remember, i could have sworn, I while back I saw a Milwaukee 4 in 1 driver with adapters like that, but it looked more like a regular driver, without the magnetic thing on the front and it was fuel. I cant find it now. I can find one like it, non-fuel, but not the fuel one.
