Why not step back about 5-10 cells after occupying the entire map, then create zigzag obstacles on the left and right with stone towers and wooden towers to slow down the zombie waves, then the survival rate will increase. higher . try it to see if it works
Actually in some challenge runs people use stone towers and wire fence traps to do what you just suggested. I think on this run I felt pretty confident I'd win and I almost got punished for it!
