You can run flat tops and deck the heads to get a bit of compression. I had a 351C SBF that was pushing 12:1 compression. I had to run premium plus two bottles of octane booster when I couldn't get race gas. I don't suggest going over 10.5:1 in a street car. You can get the power, rather easily with a good top end and cam. You also need to address the rotating weight at the dampener and flywheel if you want a motor that revs and drops rpms quickly so you can get fast shifts. It's more important to have an engine that's built right regarding good seal at the piston and valves. Beyond that it comes to flow and a complete burn
You will have to deal with the computer to achieve any timing changes on an LS engine. You can't just turn it up or down at the distributor or with an MSD kit because there is no distributor at all. Programming can help these engines out a lot.

The 243 ls6 heads are the same as the 799 castings that came on some 5.3Ls like the L33 which is a rare aluminum block 5.3L with flat top pistons from the factory. So an L33 is basically a flat top piston, aluminum block, with ls6 heads. So just add a cam and swap on an LS6 intake. Which is exactly what I've done. The literal only difference between the 799 heads from a 5.3 and the LS6 243 heads is the exhaust valves on the 243s were sodium filled. I'm now contemplating adding a turbo to this engine because I love massive power and it's in a 4000lbs 2000 ZR2 S10 4x4. You could do a mild cam and ls6 intake on a stick L33 and put it in a little light weight car and it would scare the hell out of most anyone. An rx7 would be a great car for the "baby LS6"

Front wheel drive car, though. Torque steer was a bitch, and that stupid cylinder shutoff had to be deleted.
Was fun to smoke C5 vettes on the highway in my 4 door Pontiac, but it was 470 ish hp at the wheels. Decent torque but that POS GTP transmission was the weak point. Warranty covered 5 of them lol.

Stock 4.8 pistons are not an alternative to a domed piston. All 4.8's had a true flat top piston, also you have to remember PtV when considering a longer duration cam with any domed piston. 243/799's are cathedral port heads but just stock aren't going to get you 500hp. 862/706's are good too but you Must put a good port in these heads, larger intake valve and a good valve job. Then the cathedral port heads Really make power especially the 243/799's with that nice short turn radius they have that the 706/862's don't really have... however they'll still get destroyed by a good CNC'd rec port head🤷🏻‍♂️. The 5.7s are extremely restricted engines. Take a look at your exhuast manifolds once and you'll understand what I mean. They're very very capable but nobody every really does a whole build on them. I would argue the only glaring restriction that came with these truck motors is the laughably weak cams that came in them. The cylinder heads are proven to be pretty damn good depending on casting and at most would require a milling and porting job to be fine for street use. The truck intake manifolds outflow the LS1 and 6 manifolds, and is only really topped by the TBSS intake if you’re only looking at factory manifolds. That being said, a H/C/I Vortec is still a nasty combo for just about any vehicle you could drop it in.

Get a proper click type torque wrench and look up the torque spec for every bolt. There’s countless videos on TH-cam for just about every part on every vehicle. Learn some stuff and have fun. And when it all comes together at the end, knowing you did it yourself makes it fell a thousand times more rewarding.

This motor is equivalent to the chevy 327liter... short stroke crank for alot of torc from this engine... not just truck motor, it's in the tahoes also!!! You can always tell without popping the hood by looking at the VIN number and if there is a " Z " as the 7th number/letter, you have a 5.3 Vortec engine!!! Chevy installs these engines in the police packaged vehicles!!!

Keep the stock piston and add boost! Probably should replace the rings and beatings though. And new oil pump.
I just came into ownership of a 1980 chevy g20 with a vortex 350. I'm getting 400hp with really simple upgrades and it's really stable.

Good to hear a young man knows engines.
Can't find technicians to work on cars that would take it seriously for a profession.

Put a mild cam in a 5.3 and opened up the exhaust. Dynod 333 hp and 360 lbft at the wheels.
The torque is just amazing, prduced 360 from 1300-6k rpm all the way through..

The 243 heads had smaller combustion chamber causing the compression ratio to go up, factory pistons are domed, if you put flat top pistons in they'll burn better, and the truck cam is still solid for lower end torque which goes against the pistons and heads, go with a racing style cam, nitrous, supercharged and turbo cams are all different, the racing cam with 243 heads would pump out 500 fo sho
