What a pocket rocket. James is the showboat king. Well done on your recent pre 66 wins. Amazing drifts and race footage on your channel too. Big up WeaselWerkz
great video guys. its good to see one of these once much under-rated and unloved cars being kept alive as a racer. my very first car was a 1970 mk3 when I was 17. replaced the standard 875cc lump with a 930cc block from a scrap Chrysler Sunbeam, head from a Stiletto running a Weber 28/36 DCD and a Janspeed exhaust system. other than the time-honoured front end suspension mods, an uprated radiator core, rev counter and the wider 155 radial tyres fitted the car was standard. had lots of fun with it and your video takes me back 40 years like it was yesterday
Good insight to a young bloke doing well with an imp. I hill climb them and they are great cars. Light and grippy through the corners. I believe they will get very sought after as time goes by. By the way all the mini minor drivers I hill climb with i call the the hillman imp fan club. Haha
Brilliant car control 18 minutes in - you can see why James wins races! Credit should also be given to engine builder Andy Jones of Shrigley Engineering.
I have had six imps....loved them...and some tweeted ones to, but not to that level. More basic... The Ex would collect the kids back in 85 from school...and at times 5 in there.. maybe more... Never today🤔👍 These are simply great. They have served their private and commercial purpose well. Not forgetting that people could have have sport fun too. We need cars like that today for town use... You don't need big oil/fuel burners...with one person in them.. One needs practical... honest cars.... mini or imp..like that. Bring back 'Practicality' You've done a good job preparing and racing...l have also seen you in some race videos..well done. Imps always catch my eye.. And will forever...😅👍👍👍👍
Even a standard 875cc could be great fun. My '66 was lowered 1" on slightly stiffer road springs with a few other mild suspension tweaks and decent radials, and a slightly tweaked rebuilt engine on a single Stromberg. Used to amuse myself chasing supposedly faster cars on twisty roads. Now I wish I'd kept it but I sold it to my BiL on getting a company car, he used it for 18 months before loosing reverse and sold it to banger racers in '82.
You can imagine the response I get from some with the Datsun engine in my Imp. It'll be fun seeing the reaction when I finish my goldwing flat six conversion :) @@WeaselWerkz
I ran Imps for years (from late 90's to early 2000's), had a rare Commer van and a basic 70's saloon, pride of the fleet was a 67 Californian Coupe which i rescued from a scrap yard in Falkirk, done as a road/rally car, had a Mk1 Fiesta rad in the front and Fiesta disc brakes, cage and bucket seats, rally dash pod same as James's car, Monte Carlo springs, Spax shockers, engine was the standard 875 Sport motor with twin Strombergs, went really well and was reliable but got bored with it eventually, bought a 1980 Chevy Caprice, sadly stripped all the good bits off the Imp and gave the shell away.
Running an Imp on the road without an air cleaner was always described as an instant re-bore kit as the engine compartment would fill with normal road dust. Race cars could afford the frequent rebuilds. I found that one of the most important mods was to reinforce the front suspension bracket pick up points with a length of 1" square box section welded in but I then triangulated the stiffener with tube and a brace between the arches. The effect is amazing as the front end torsional stiffness is vastly improved. The Imp engine is strangulated with too small and tortuous an inlet tract that limits the max power to no more than 120bhp and that with a 1200cc engine
James never disappoints. So many memories over the years of him ripping it up in this in its many various states and his E36 compact up at our local meets in MK every Sunday evening. Don’t get to see him much anymore which is a right shame
Great car had one in the 80s my first car used on the road had a1040 great ham engine built by Andy Chesham ran a r21 cam Monte Carlo springs at front with spax and rac springs and koni at the back jack night transaxle twin dellerotos on janspeed combined inlet and exaust manifold with a transit back box had 110 bhp at the wheels those were the days regards tony
I own 2 hillman imps amongst other cars , they are serious fun , I wish I could get hold of a jack night gearbox , there literally like hens teeth , great video guys , keep up the great work 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hello. A beautiful and stylish car. Is the yellow-blue sticker on the side window the flag of Ukraine? why am I asking because I am from Ukraine, the city of Kyiv.

Doesn't take much to turn a normal production car into a fun little ripper! Jealous you got to experience one!
Wicked James. More shows like this please. Doing your best to upset the classic car barries.
Purists hate him

Proof that it's not all about big power to have a fun drive
They are available...
so sick
cool little ripper!
Have a look at 'Apex - the inside story of the Hillman Imp' for more background. I suspect Jason has read that a few times!
pretty bongin that frfr
skrrr skrrrr
I can confirm it's possible to stroll around holding a fully built Imp unit, with carbs and exhaust. I weighed it at around 60kg.
Did you bench it?!
