In the 2015 renewal of the Vase, Ryan Moore got it right on Highland Reel. Just go back and look at the splits he allowed Highland Reel to run in the Vase in 2015 vs. the splits he let him run in 2016 and there's a substantial difference. The bottom line in this year's renewal of the Vase is that Ryan Moore allowed Highland Reel to go too fast in the early and mid sections of the race. Add to that tactical error his kicking for home too early on Highland Reel, which I believe played a huge roll in his running out of gas in the final 50 or so meters of the race, which allowed Satono Crown to nail him by a head at the wire. I'm not suggesting that Satono Crown didn't run a terrific race in his own right because he did. But in my view this was a race that not only could've been won by Highland Reel, it should've been won by Highland Reel had he been given a smarter ride by Ryan Moore, IMO.
Shame to see him get beat,but the winner here is no mug!Nearly £4 million prizemoney and one of the best in Japan and we all know how often Japanese horses are under rated especially if ridden by one of the best jocks in the Far East..
It's not been a bad year for Highland Reel, has it? Satono Crown has always been highly-regarded in Japan but hasn't put it all together in big one until now,

He won the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and G1 Breeders Cup Turf, and he had 2nd place finishes in the G1 Prix De l'Arc de Triomphe, G1 Juddmonte International Stakes, G1 Hong Kong Vase, & G2 Hardwicke Stakes. I personally think the Hong Kong Vase & Hardwicke Stakes were both races he should've won, but even still, his year overall wasn't too shabby at all, IMO.
A very poorly judged ride by Ryan Moore aboard Highland Reel in this renewal for sure. Moore allowed him to get into a horse race with Big Orange with 1300 meters left and then allowed him to start his stretch run far too early at the 1000 meters giving Satono Crown exactly what he needed to reel in Highland Reel, pardon the pun. If Ryan Moore had just gotten Highland Reel to relax and dropped him in right behind Big Orange after he made his move for the front at the 1300m, and then held on to him for about another 1/2 furlong before turning him loose, I have no doubt he would've held off Satono Crown's late charge and become a 3-time winner of the G1 Hong Kong Vase, IMO.
