Yeah it’s a pretty awful thing to say to your mother, I personally would let my mom and dad live with me, But if they NEEDED to be in a place where they had 24/7 professional care i would bring them to a retirement home, If I have the money I hope to have one day I would pay special nurses and care takers to come in and help me take care of them

I’d understand if the term was used in context of a statement that never doesn’t mention psychological and/or physical trauma. But I believe this person directly states their experience with emotional abuse from thier mother.
I guess I’m just bothered by the term because when it’s used it seems as though people are dismissing an issue. No matter how minor that issue may be, I just see it as unnervingly ignorant. It’s almost as though the people who use that term regularly believe that if the negative aspects of life are ignored, it can’t effect them. +gc68 Honestly there are many aspects to this and you shouldn't be so black and white about it. Like taking into consideration if your future house has many stairs or obstacles in it that your parent wouldn't be able to walk around easily when they're older. Or if you're still working a lot and don't have time to make meals for them. With a home, there is someone there to constantly watch after them.

+Jazzy Ziggy You clearly aren't an adult as you would realise how stupid it would be to do otherwise. There are numerous reasons why you should do that. You may not have the space. When you have you and your partner, plus X amount of kids, you may not have the room for another person. If you both work there is no one to look after her. At a rest home they can socialise with people their own age, and science has proven socialising is good for us. They also have round the clock care including medical care, and considering a lot of old people have dementia, alzheimers, need help walking, going to the bathroom etc. As long as it is a nice place, pleasant, clean and they have good care and you visit, there is nothing wrong with that.

I never said anything about leaving them at facilities that are harsh or don't look after them, nor did I deny the existence of rest homes like that.

Chuck Norris I don't know how old you are, or what ethnicity you belong to but I certain none of you have common sense. I described perfectly why you could have to put your parents in a care home. Nothing crazy about that. Its logical. And people agree with me. I'm guessing you ethnicity isn't American or European and your culture mainly follows historical practices. Cultures like Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern, Russian, African etc. don't believe in placing elderly in care homes (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) however most of those cultures are fairly backwards in other areas as well, and anyone can see that backwards practices are not smart. What would you do if you had a wife and kids, and on top of that your parents developed dementia and needed full time care. What about space in the house? What about their social life, which can be maintained at a rest home?

I never said nursing homes don't have a purpose & shouldn't exist, but to send every elderly person to one is heartless. They need to socialise so you're going to dump them in a nursing home? What kind of fucked logic is that?
My grandfather had cancer, my grandmother dementia, my other grandmother paranoia, my mum's uncle severe dementia... Yet we all grouped together & cared for them & gave them the absolute best care until they passed away - and they lived the happiest lives they could have. Im part of an organisation that visits the elderly in homes - and they all have an underlying sadness, and while they make friends, they feel lonely deep down without that family bond. My parents haven't reached a stage of dependency (& I pray they will always be well enough to be able to look after themselves), but if they do, I will always look after them & care for them to the absolute best of my ability.
But you're too blinded to comprehend where I'm coming from or anything I'm saying so I'm not even going to bother any further with you.
FYI I'm born and bred Australian, with a half European half middle eastern background so don't try to stuff me in your limited category box.

The mere idea of a person sending their parent to an elderly 'home' gives me goosebumps. The person who raised you spending sleepless nights taking care of you, worrying about your future, sacrificing lots of things to make sure you get all that you need and want...how can you so heartlessly send them to an elderly home when they're not 'useful' to you anymore?...as if they're disposable items to be ridden off when not in use...
Then again, it all comes back to the culture you belong to.
And ofcourse in some cases, the parent may need close medical attention that you cannot provide by yourself, but I am not even talking about those cases.

Actually, I am Asian too (not East Asia but more like the Mediterranean region of Asia). I guess one's personal relationship with their parent has as much bearing as culture on this matter, if not more.
Not all homes are bad though, its seen as 'throwing them in a home' when in a lot of cases its not. A lot of elderly people suffer from dementia not to mention countless other illnesses and ailments and its a lot better for them to be around people that can care for that. Its not like once theyre in a home it cuts off all communication and visitation with their family. My grandma for example is in the early stages of dementia and while she currently lives in a bungalow we've had many discussions about moving her into a home. She likes her independence yet she needs care and thats what she would receive in a home. She had a fall at the bus stop a while back and since then shes cut herself off from all the communication with her neighbours and friends her own age as she is uncomfortable with travelling too far from her home to go to church etc. So she is really looking forward to finding an assisted living facility that she likes that means she can be around people going through the same thing and be able to talk to people more and recieve the help she needs
