  • We arrive at Altnaharra C&MC Site. Possibly the most remote club site with the Caravan and Motorhome Club. We drive via through Durness with some amazing and slightly scary roads.

    Not sure that Sue would like the narrow roads but the reward is the fabulous camp site at the end. Lovely video again, thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻

    Durness was a holiday spot for a young John Lennon and it is said the song In My Life was about his time there - many people are unaware of the link to the Beatles. Funnily he revisited the place many years later and managed to crash his car on the single track you you mentioned as being a bit hairy LOL. Have been there with the band for a music festival many years ago and fell in love with the place. A lot less busier than these days and everyone in the village had a role in the music festival. From what I remember dogs were allowed on the beach and have some grat photos including some with the mileage pole to various places. Whilst it is great for the village all the increased visitors the North 500 brings it does make me remember the good old days where the roads were quite empty. I believe the campsite in Durness is free during the winter for the hardy adventurers LOL

    Nothing wrong with the water at that site. We went to it 3 or 4 times a year for 22 yrs and Grummore (the site name) was the jewel in the crown of Caravan Club sites until they went H&S daft, especially with the water which can sometimes have a little bit of colour in it from the peat. Lovely roads, there are 44 tonne trucks on those roads and they manage with no bother :-)

    A week ago today we woke up at Sango Sands site, great views over the sea, the beach is beautiful, there is a bother beach just beyond the prominence as you look up the beach. Smoo cave is good for a visit, and cocoa mountain isn’t far from Durness, gorgeous chocolate and hot chocolate. Yes, Malcolm, my husband who drives a fire engine agreed it was a challenging drive driving east to west, he was tired after drove from Dunnet Bay to Durness, mind you, in October it was a lot quieter. We fancy Altnaharra as well, the list is getting longer..😂😂😂

    Watching this in 2021.we have done this drive every year for the past eighteen years.yes its a long drive from Scourie to Altnaharra ( one of my husbands favourite sites)I go there to please him.you should have stopped on the c.l on loch eriboll to break the long drive especially on the miles of passing place road.because of the stay cation due to cover when we were up there late August it was horrendously busy and people were driving into the sites and being turned away.we have never seen so many hired motorhomes.next year hopefully will be more peace and quiet.enjoy your travels.c.c mh members for 40 years.enjoy.

      Yes, it was really busy this year in the Highlands, seems like everyone who went abroad previously had just bought a motorhome or hired one and drove to the Highlands.

    Might be a silly question but what are the thumb-wheel things under the end of the armrests of the front seats which are visible at 17:27?

    Nice views, but we have definitely gone past no toilet block sites ? Hope you have stocked up on food etc, have checked the site details and shops are 20 miles away, good luck ! I hope Jenny managed to watch the cup final, pity about the result. I noticed that there seemed to be loads of Motorhomes on the road and in the lay-bys , what is the Scotish rules on overnight parking on wild camping ?

    • @BobEarnshawMoHo
      @BobEarnshawMoHo  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colin Humphries Thanks for the question. As I understand it, there is no legislation to prevent roadside parking in Scotland. However, Wild Camping byelaws in Scotland apply to light weight camping not motorhomes. However some places encourage it, others tolerate it and we have a permit to camp overnight in the Trossachs National Park.

    • @jennyreddaway2666
      @jennyreddaway2666 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BobEarnshawMoHo Perhaps that response needs a wee bit clarification. To Colin, you cannot park in passing places on single track roads - they are not lay-bys - but you can, unless told otherwise, in proper lay-bys. Bob is quite correct in saying that there is no wild camping for motorised vehicles in Scotland - something made quite clear in the Scottish Access Code. As for single track roads, work the rules. If the passing place is on your left, pull into it, if it's on the right, stop opposite it - the folks at 4.59 in were wrong. Remember that passing places aren't just there for oncoming cars to pass but to allow following vehicles to overtake you. No-one minds how slowly you drive on these roads so long as you are aware of what's around you and remember other people aren't necessarily on holiday.

    Sorry, Bob and Jenny, because you're obviously experienced round Scotland from your videos, but was really confused at your comments about driving on particularly narrow single track with crash barriers to and surprised at meeting a bin lorry. It seemed strange from folks so experienced as yourselves that you didn't anticipate something as mundane as a bin lorry! There was some pretty awful driving (NOT by you) in this clip; for example the convoy of motorhomes coming towards you in convoy at 4.something and the two vehicles parked in the passing place on the wrong side at 5.03 - someone else has mentioned the bikers.
