      @@comfortablynumb9342 Indeed. Otherwise, hollow wooden arrows wouldn't be tough enough to handle the stress of the bowstring, which would promptly split the arrow in two. More dangerous to the user than the target, if you ask me! Actual warbow arrows were made of thick wood, moreso towards the center where the force is higher and where arrows otherwise tend to break more.

    • @Harrowed2TheMind
      @Harrowed2TheMind 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@RemusKingOfRome That being said, while I don't think medieval archers did, I know that Koreans did in fact use it en masse with arrow launchers propelled by gunpowder named 'Hwacha' around the 15th century, which are more like early rocket launcher platforms, if anything. I can explain the miracle arrow in the cabbage.
    When the arrow exploded, the tip was destroyed so fast that the tail was able to to continue its forward motion into the cabbage. The explosion had to nudge the back of the arrow a bit.

    • @paul-davidbadovinac3635
      @paul-davidbadovinac3635 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was nudged downward a bit because the arrow hit directly above the cabbage and the explosion was forced upward and outward. Well, from there Isaac Newton can explain the rest...... Lol...

      If you're in the UK that's not true, UK is far more restrictive. For starters you can carry locking bladed knives up to 11 or 12cm in public in Germany, and even fixed blade hunting knives. Secondly you can buy blank firing pistols over the counter, and they will do some damage at close range - they call them Schreckschusspistolen which means literally ''shock shot pistols''. You can also buy .22 calibre CS gas rounds for them. It's very easy to obtain a licence to carry one of these in public, concealed carry i.e. in a pccket or handbag, I say handbag because since 2015 and the events in Cologne I think about 1 million of these licences were issued, mostly to women. In the UK I can't even buy a replica pistol or airsoft pistol unless it's painted bright orange.

      Yeah ,We getting creative here in the UK and Europe.Learning how to make effective self defence projectiles is becoming a thing now. The one advantage with a bow or repeating crossbow is that your discharge doesn’t reveal your location anywhere near as easy as a firearm. This is critical if you are up against multiple assailants in a home defence situation. Of course no two situations are the same even in the same location.

    New goals. Exploding arrow ~vs~ body armor. 💥
    The rim fire cartridge of the .22 blank, needs to be struck against a hard surface, like a steel plate, or it won't explode.

    • @billyandrew

      Maybe hot glue a toy pistol cap with a small screw atop it, head towards the target, to ignite the cap, which will ignite the main body of powder?
      It only takes a spark to set off black powder.
      Any resistance the head meets doesn't have to be 100% solid to push the screw back enough to set off the cap.
      If the screw being propelled through the target by the explosion doesn't do some serious damage, then the resulting explosion will, as we saw with the cabbage.
      Job's a good 'un! 😂

    But IF some of you are going to try something like this at home (as I did when I was in my teens) then PLEASE take some precautions.
    Keep a fire extinguisher at hand. Try to use electric detonation rather than a lit fuse. Make sure you have a barrier to take cover behind.
    And also, never experiment with compounds you don't know the chemistry for disarming. Not all explosives are rendered inert by water. Some explosives will still be live, even if completely soaked in water. And other chemicals will even be set off by contact with water.
    So make damn sure you do your reading first.
    I don't want to encourage people to play around with explosives. But knowing human nature, some of you will probably try it at some point. That's why I want to strongly recommend doing it with all precautions.

    "The loudest thing you'll hear at a fireworks display will be about 20 grams of flash powder"
    Sorry, that's just wrong. The smallest starting salutes most commonly used are 75mm or 50mm shells with around 100g of flash powder. Alternatively a 50g ground salute can be used when the safety distance has to be less.
    20g is in the range of the break used in effect shells.
    Big fireworks shows with decently large shells will have much more than this.
    In the UK you can legally buy rockets with 10g flash each, without any license.

      They were banned in the '70s but the ban was lifted in the '90s. After the ban was lifted, they were virtually unregulated for a bit.
