I used scrap pieces of 2x6 to make u-shaped pieces that I screwed to the inside of the sideboards where each support goes so you can slide the board in from the top. We haven't used the bed for quite a whole year yet but the side boards don't seem to be bending out yet.
We painted the bed once it was all assembled. I made the bed so that it could be easily disassembled to get it in the house. The headboard and footboard come off and the whole bed frame breaks down into individual pieces. I made slots for the support pieces so they could just be slid into place and the side boards are bolted to the headboard and footboard.
I used 6 - 4 1/2" screws on each side from the outside of the post into the headboard. Also the 2x4 that goes over the top is screwed to both the post and the headboard.
