Jenkins, Marshall, and Babbington's move from Nucleus to The Softs was one of the most under-rated trades in sports history!

And Holdsworth, too! Wow! Ian Carr must've been kicking himself all the way to his grave, (RIP)!

This is sublime allan, his sound was superb both with soft machine and Tony William's (check scirroco with William's lifetime band)
    Great post.

of course! The the Bundles album, 1975, is based on stuff evolving in 1974 - if I only had known - excellent professional performance. Only slight technical & mood differences with the record. But the unpredictability of the late 60's live gigs definitely had its charm, too, one needs to see their complete career evolution

I saw this line up live at Birmingham University back in the 70’s. During the first number Allan looked uncomfortable. He left the stage mid song and returned with his duffle coat on, he was obviously cold.

That is some serious shredding. Does anyone have a tab of this? Just kidding. RIP Alan.

Thank you for doing so! I've been listening to AH since I was a teen in the 80s, never fails to inspire.

I had AH autograph my copy of Bundles. He was playing at the Birmingham Strathallan Hotel on 19 October 1980 as part the band Turning Point's tour (some really interesting folk in the line-up, including Gary Husband and Pepi Lemer - vocal coach to the Spice Girls! www.fingerprintsweb.net/ah/press/tp80.html ). Sold the lp when I was short of cash - what an idol am I! Saw Allan at several Birmingham Jazz Society concerts: Ian Carr's Nucleus, Turning Point and IOU - and at my first ever concert playing with UK. Plenty of great shows too when I moved down to London - Gordon Beck band at the 100 Club on Oxford St (with guitarists such as John Etheridge in the audience) and his own band at the Bass Clef Club (stood in the queue for hours on the first night and didnt get in so queued straight after work the second night and just got in). Those were the days! Great guitarist who is sadly missed. But what a legacy.

My favourite version has always been the 1974 "Switzerland" version but the blowing on this version gets very close. Every recorded 1974 version demonstrates an incredible variety of licks which are different at each gig. A perfect demonstration of his "Coltrane" style and influence.
Allan first came to my attention with Tempest (just before Soft Machine I think) where his playing was in a similar Jazz-rock style and incredibly committed. I also attended the Birmingham gigs you listed as well as Ronnie Scotts in Birmingham. Such a humble and gifted musician that we were able to witness probably at the height of his career.

Reminds me... When I saw Allan with the Jazz Explosion Supergroup (Dallas/FtWorth show), after the show I sent my black I.O.U. t-shirt up to the stage for an autograph (the stage was quite far, 30+' maybe, from the stage/band/Allan) and it was taking a while. So security/police decide the venue was closed and we, I, had to go NOW! Anyway, I got my shirt but it took begging, pleading, arguing and maybe coming somewhat close to getting arrested to do it. My shirt's gone (long disintegrated), but I do have a picture of me wearing it at least.

At what point in this video is Allan Holdsworth playing violin? I only heard him playing (freakin' otherworldly) guitar.

Anche The Soft Weed Factor (in Six) è simile a Song for the Bearded Lady e Hazard Profile.

Same composer (Karl Jenkins), basically this Soft Machine is mostly a rebranded Nucleus as most of the original Soft Machine members had already left the band when Bundles was made (except Ratledge) and were replaced by former Nucleus members. So Jenkins basically reworked his classic "Song for a Bearded Lady" into "Hazard Profile".

That speed and dexterity has to be some crazy cross wiring in the brain. 50 years and I can't get that and the endless licks! The fastest my hands ever got was when I unspapped my girlfriends bra for the first time at the movie theater. Now i'm just Old, slow and too Ugly for a 20 year old...

Every live take I've heard of Hazard profile is a mess and this is no exception. They must've really lucked out in the recording studio
