- In this concluding episode of the three part short course on civil society, the view of Antonio Gramsci are presented. In a twist from either Hegel and Marx, Gramsci considered civil society to be part of the state. Its function was to build ruling class hegemony in the realm of ideas. But civil society was also a terrain of contestation where counter-hegemonic forces could form a historic block to create a political, economic, and most importantly, a cultural revolution.

I call myself a neo-Gramscian scholar as I’m using his ideas of cultural hegemony to look into the cinema of Pakistan and Iran post-Islamisation for my PhD thesis. Through your lectures you are destroying hegemony of ruling class , we need lot of work continuously because ruling class is dominating through various ways through technology , books , cinema etc.....

3/3 Liberal civil society is part of the state, I don't doubt that. And it has made our task more difficult in some ways. but as long as people are willing to question the reality they live in, capitalism is destined to fall apart. We just need to keep doing what we are doing.
I watched both of your lectures in Urdu and English which made it possible to understand Gramscian Interpretation of cultural hegemony. I recommend every curious mind to watch and listen to Dr Taimoor Rehman on different political and economic topics.
