My understanding is that Otis was the "musical director" of Muddy's band and he'd rehearse the band in the basement of Muddy's house while Muddy would be upstairs watching the baseball game.

This is absolutely as good as it gets. Otis & Willie are both in top form. Notice how Willie sets the tempo? I like the camera shot towards the end from behind Willies right shoulder. Thanks for posting this great video.

I played keyboards with Maurice John Vaughn at the Yale in Vancouver 1992 January. Freddie Dixon, Willie's son played bass.

I'm going to upset alot of people here but IMHO Otis Spann was the ULTIMATE Blues singer.
There's no one with that same , smokey, weathered voice...and what an amazing pianist.
Yes, it is a shame Colin James talks over the intro...

I had the great good fortune of meeting Willie Dixon's daughter and interviewing her in Burbank, CA around 1995. Willie wore a lot of hats as a producer, A&R man, session musician but he was primarily a great songwriter. If you'd like to learn more about all these guys a really good book is, "Can't Be Satisfied, The Life And Times Of Muddy Waters," by Robert Gordon.

Otis Spann - piano and vocals; Willie Dixon, bass & S.P. Leary, who absolutely swings his ass off on drums. What happened to that kind of touch and sensitivity in modern blues? Also, am I alone in feeling that Dixon's double stopping shows he has roots in common with Mingus, when Charles goes way down in the gut-bucket alley?

It is a coordination task, and one thing you might try is to record only your left hand playing a 12 bar blues (eg) and then play your riffs with your right hand as you listen. This will help your ear pick up on the relationships between the two hands, and then you'll be better able to work it out. He truly was an amazing pianist - one of my early favorites.

This is pretty much it as far as REAL (Chicago) blues. This is stripped down and these cats are layin' it down. You know Otis knows what he's singin' about - check out the point when he puts his hand up to his head. He ain't jivin' - this is true. And that piano! Plus Willie on the bass - what can you say. Is that S.P. Leary on drums or.....? Check Muddy's guitar lying on the piano. Oh Man - this is it. HAVE MERCY!

You are welcome. Let me know how it works for you~by the way, each key offers it's own challenges for the same kind of ostenato's - you may find that some work easier in some keys more than others, but these built-in differences help to evolve more diversity in your soloing. The more keys you can play in, the better musical "friend" you'll be to non-piano musicians!

I get sick of people passing judgement with some kind of superior attitude. If he knows so much, where is his video of blues music played with style and such feeling. We should take a look at ourselves before we judge others!

Dear OP! 1. Thanks so much for posting this! 2. Would it be possible to re-post a version where you edit out the annoying white dude who spews some condescending bullshit about Otis under the pretext of an "introduction"? So that we're just left with the actual music? It would really save the video!!!
