      well, it's great but severely limited. If Sony releases a firmware that lets it use the full mechanical shutter up to 1/8000 then it will be the best camera there.

    Something to be mindful of is the cashback and offers available at time of purchase. In the UK (so it may differ by region), there are the following:
    - For the A7IV, there is currently a £300 Summer Cashback, dropping the price to £2100 from £2400. If you're a student, you can also get an additional 10% off the camera, dropping the price down to £1860.
    - For the A6700, there is no cashback, but the student discount applies bring the price from £1449 to £1304. You can also get £250 off each of 4 lenses (10-20mm PZ, 15mm f/1.4, 70-350mm, 16-55mm f/2.8), PLUS the "Welcome to Alpha" cashback (£100 off 3 qualifying lenses following each Alpha camera you purchase, including the new A6700) and the Summer Cashback and the student discount. I was able to pick up the A6700, 16-55mm f/2.8, 10-20mm PZ and 15mm f/1.4 for a total £2400 after all discounts and cashbacks are applied (reduced from £4000).
    Be sure to have a look for these in your region, you might be able to save yourself an arm and a limb!

    The verdict is in. I took A6700 on my Portugal and Spain trip with lenses: Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, Sony 16-35mm F/4, and Sony 20mm F/1.8. Firmware 1.01. With all lenses, eye Autofocus pointed to an eye, but all pictures were out of focus when cropping in. I had the same problems with other APS-C Sony cameras such as A6000 and A6500. Low light is a complete failure. Anything greater than ISO 1600 is getting color noise and light noise. Colors are starting to shift. The noise level at ISO 1600 is the same as on A7IV's ISO 12500. The absence of closed curtains when changing lenses produced "dirty" pictures, even though I used an air blower to clean between changing lenses. I never had this issue with A7IV. The viewfinder is terrible. Even though I set it to a high refresh rate, while making the video and monitoring it in the viewfinder, the video looked choppy, like at 15fps. Another issue was that sometimes the camera failed to power up when I flipped the switch, and I had to do it multiple times. I wanted to like this camera but I am returning the A6700 and I will continue to use the A7IV for trips even though it is slightly heavier.

    It will be interesting to see a comparison of the new Fuji XS 20. Vs the 6700 as they will likely be two main competitors. Likely a no brainer for those already invested in either brand, both are good each with their own respective strengths. Though reviewed separately I saw Cameralabs gave the Fuji a rare ‘highly recommended’ and the Sony ‘recommended’ (A74 was highly recommended). As Gordon says often though ‘your mileage may vary’. Another great video Mark! Btw…I tended to prefer the 6700 in the early comparisons, just looked a bit more realistic to me, though that alley is amazing regardless.

    Since i have aps c lenses and size for travel is important to me I’m going with 6700. I have been shooting 6000 waiting for sony to come out with a camera like this.
    I almost went a7III to upgrade years ago but glad I waited as all new full frame glass is expensive for a hobby and travel.

  • @SilatShooter
    @SilatShooter ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Agreed that the A6700 is a better value and as a total 'system' much less expensive and smaller to live with. I also agree that the A7IV is the better camera, especially if you're a more serious shooter. The larger form factor, viewfinder, ports, dual card slots, higher resolution all make for a better shooting experience. Casual shooters or shooter on a budget can't go wrong with the A6700. It's a beast of a camera in a small form factor. Having said that, I would also pick the A7IV over the A7CII for the same reasons. Plus bigger FF lenses aren't going to handle well on the A7C II like they would on an A7IV (IMHO).

    Great video, Mark!!! The A6700 seems truly excellent. It's a remarkable machine not only for those creating content on social media but also for certain professional tasks. Now, why on earth didn't SONY make the ALPHA 7IV capable of shooting in 4k 60p without any cropping or even up to 4k 120p? Cheaper cameras with smaller sensors can already achieve that. And we're not talking about an entry-level camera here. Perhaps it's time for SONY to consider updating some of their cameras?

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Different cameras have different sensors and processors and limitations. So the a7iv is 33mp and full frame, and in order to get over sampled sharp 4k60, they couldn’t use the whole sensor because the readout speed is too slow. So instead of line skipping or pixel binning like in some Canon’s who do full with 4k60, they opted for the crop in the sensor. But 4k120 was likely not doable at all

    As usual, another excellent video Mark!👍 I’d love to see a low light comparison of the A6400/A6600 vs A6700. I love my A6400 and trying to decide whether the upgrade to the A6700 is worth it for Astro and nightscapes. I’ll wait for the A7Cii for an upgrade decision, but already having the Sony 18-135, Tamron 11-20, Sony 11 & 15 and Sigma 18-50 lenses makes the jump to FF a tough justification for a hobbyist. After the kit lens, I blame you for emptying out my wallet.😂

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you won't see a noticeable improvement in lowlight with the a6700 for astro and night-caps - but you will see a big improvement with full frame. You can consider getting a used a7iii or a7c for what you're shooting (ir wait for a sale - Sony just had the a7iii $500 off - I'm sure they'll do it again)

    Just a note of caution, overheating can be very unpredictable. I have never had any overheating issues with my Sony A7IV up until last weekend. I shoot student music exam videos. My typical use case is on a tripod, screen flipped out, temp setting high. Usually, I fiddle around with the camera for 10-15 minutes to setup basic lighting and then I record in 4k XAVC S 10 bit 422 (2 cards backup recording) in bursts of anywhere from 5-10 minutes each. Repeat at most 3-4 times. This most recent time, the camera was on for around an hour. And I was in indoors, it's winter over here so the house heating was on but nothing that was alarmingly warmer than it should have been. Fairly large room too, plenty of air flow. The camera showed the overheat warning at around the hour mark and it freaked me out! I took out the battery (genuine Sony) which was about 35-40% at this stage and replaced with a new one. This seemed to fix things and so I continued without issue for another 10-15 minutes to finish the recording. All good in the end but it was a somewhat nervous and unpleasant experience towards the end.

    Waiting for my 6700 to arrive in two days. For me it is a cost, size, and weight decision. No contest.
    The cost gap grows much wider when multiple lenses add much to the FF game. I prefer the EVF on the left.

  • @AprilClayton
    @AprilClayton ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just the video I was looking for. The EVF on the A7IV is what I have come to love. I don’t like it on the side. The full frame shallow depth of field is tricky to get used to coming from APSC. I keep getting one person in focus but not the other without stopping down.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis

    Thank you so much for this video, great comparison of the pluses for each one. I happen to be rally a full frame shooter for a long time and already own the A7IV( along with some higher end Sony A7Rx and A1 body) but for small size I’ve been using the A7C. I know A rumored update of that has been talked about but the A6700 really appears to be better even though I rarely shoot video. I do have my bigger Sony GM lenses but also the Sigma I-Series small primes that I think may translate to APS-C well, I.e. 24->36, 35->52.5, 50->75, etc… so I think I’m covered and they are not that large. Thanks for your time and effort.

    Great video. From a low light perspective, I see that the A6700 sensor is no better or even worse than the old APS-C sensor from the A6500 I had in the past. I am about to receive A6700 and would have to decide what I would take on my vacation to Europe: A7IV or A6700. Weight is a strong factor here. I want it to be light, but, for a day I have, before I leave on my trip, of testing between the two I would have to make a decision and either return A6700 with Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 or take it on my trip.
    A7IV with Sigma 28-70 f2.8 - 1129g FF vs A6700 with Sigma 18-55 f2.8 - 783g APSC. Difference will be felt after the whole day of walking and shooting on a gimbal.

    I'm undecided whether to continue with my A6700, which I'm very satisfied with, or switch to the 7-4. The 6700 satisfies me, it has phenomenal autofocus and everything else is excellent, but the 7-4 would give me greater creative control with depth of field, greater security thanks to the double memory slot and (maybe?) better ergonomics.

I have a fair amount of apsc glass, but it's tempting to make the leap up to full frame (I went on vacation and took in the range of 12K pics, but under pressure, I often struggled to get sharpest focus with wildlife with the a6300).
    By the time one factors in the $1300 CAD of the A7IV over the a6700 *and* getting new lenses, it's a lot of cheddar. It also feels like the A7IV, as good as it is, is getting just a bit long in the tooth compared to its competitors (Canon R6II, Fuji X-HS2), i.e. cropped 4K60. Still a great camera and the focus is great. But I wonder if it's better to wait some months for the A7CII (is rumored to have similar or even better specs to the A7IV) or a direct successor to the A7IV.

    2:15 Sorry, saying that a 16mm 1.4 becomes a 24mm 2.1 on a crop sensor is misleading and incorrect. It becomes a 24mm 1.4 on a crop sensor. The reason the DOF is changed is because you have to reposition the camera further away to achieve the same photo with a crop camera. It is the repositioning of the camera which changes the DOF. In fact, an image from a16mm 1.4 on a crop camera will look EXACTLY like an image from a 24mm 1.4 on a full frame camera.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sure - but that doesn’t help people understand that if you stand in the same spot with an apsc camera with a 16mm 1.4 that it will look equivalent to standing in the same spot with a 24mm f2.1 in terms of field of view and depth of field. You say a 16mm 1.4 looks exactly like a 24mm 1.4 on a full frame - well, the background will be much blurrier on the full frame standing in the same spot and it’s not helpful to tell people, that it’s because the sensor size relative to distance of the subject makes the 1.4 look like a 2.1.

    Hey, Mark! Great video as usual!! There is a question I have regarding the a6700 that I couldnt find the answer anywhere… Do you know if I use the Hdmi out (to a monitor for example) if it loses the face/eye detection autofocus? i know in the FX30 it retains the face AF… As it has a full sized HDMI, I wanted to know if the a6700 works the same with its micro HDMI. 😅

    For a similar price and forgetting for a moment all the extra features, if we consider only the image quality straight out of the camera (PP0, no post)... Would you say the full frame A7C sensor and the 6700 APS-C sensor will give similar results in normal light conditions (indoors/studio)? Most of those new features are not really important for me and I'm just interested about getting the best quality for this price range.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you don’t plan to do any colour grading they will give a similar image with PPOFF. The issue will be lenses. You can get a sigma 16mm 1.4 (what I shot this video with) for $350. To get a full frame version of that will be much more expensive. So your total cost with the a6700 and a good lens is $1750. That will be closer to $2500 for the A7C and a good lens

    Hey Mark, appreciate your video a lot thanks. On 3:24 you compared 6700 4k60p vs a7IV 4k60 which is supposed to be a cropped sensor size the same like 6700, and then we need to multiply again both the Focal length and aperture by 1.5. But the question is why do we still get shallower DOF (more bokeh on the backgroud), when this is supposed to be the same when using cropped FF sensor area? Does that mean that 6700 also crops at even smaller area of its sensors and do not oversample from its full APC-S coverage?

    i disagree with a7iv crop 60 fps in video disadvantage, the a6700 has a apsc crop sensor so the a7iv crops to 1.5 times or apsc mode on 4k 60fps, it is truth that the a6700 does not crop but you dont count the 1.5 times already crop apsc sensor of the a6700 so they are equal in that mode.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its just that the angle changes dramatically when going from 4k 24 to 60 on the A7IV. So there are lots of shooters who have a lens on, say, shooting a wedding, and then they want some clips of the same scene in slow motion - then it crops in 1.5 times. So in order to combat that - you have to be in APS-C crop the whole time - at that point, why not have the camera that is $1000 cheaper or the FX30

    Good comparison. Thanks. I have a a6500 (about 5 years) and I have enjoyed using it. Not perfect, but as an amateur it fits my needs for family and vacation photos. Also, a lot cheaper for camera and lenses than full frame. I looked at upgrading to the a7C but could not justify the expense of going to full frame lenses. I am considering the a6700. It certainly is a big upgrade compared to my a6500. However, I lose the built-in flash (which is handy in lower light situations and I don’t have to carry around a large flash attachment) and I lose the panoramic mode which I use on my annual fishing trips into Canada. I only use jpeg photos and out of the camera videos. So I’m wondering if I should keep my a6500 and invest in more lenses or go for the a6700?

    Mark, from your high position in anything camera, do you see improvements in sensors that will make the smaller aps-c more attractive than the heavier and more expensive alternative? Just when I think we see the end, Sony pulls out a couple of remarkable cameras, the FX-30 and the FX-30 with an EVF, aka the a6700! After a lot of photography, much of it macro or just messing around, I find the aps-c more than adequate in producing professional grade images. Now that the a6700 is a baby A7R5 with a few DNA strands from the ZV-E1, it makes me think that it is the Messiah of aps-c cameras. This will give photographers a break from the overly heavy, overly praised FF bodies. I do love my A7R3 for the things I love to do with it, like bird photography or taking pictures of that darn drone the U.S. Air Force flies over my house.
    Even taking pictures of the moon is easy and I get a 300-900mm zoom with my a6600 or ZV-E10 vs, 200-600 on my FF body. Images are very close when it comes to image quality.
    BTW, the little ZV-E10 is one great photo camera. I just use more powerful reading glasses to see the screen better.
