- I called FoxFarm and got the scoop on their feeding schedule vs. bottle mixture, the difference between their Ocean Forest and Happy Frog soil, and whether to use their Hydro version of Grow Big when fertilizing using the double-cup method.

The last one for soil . Look for the yellow row (cal-mag). This is for Fox farms cultivation Nation brand of Cal mag. Maybe double check the ingredients if you're using a different brand. Also, I prefer the metric (spanish) chart since it makes it super easy when doing half and quarter strength mixtures.
Their feeding schedule is designed for growing marijuana indoors. It can be adapted to growing things like peppers or tomatoes, but that chart is specifically designed for marijuana plants. The 18 hour light cycle turning to 12 to start flowering is the biggest give away.

I start my seeds in a plastic cup using Happy Frog & then transplant them to a larger pot of Ocean Forest... wait 2 weeks, then start the feeding as per their chart (diluted 1st two feedings: 3 tsp & 5 tsp respectively), then do exactly as you state and extend the Week 4 schedule until Flowering begins. Grows Monsters!

Beginner grower here attempting my first grow. So what your saying is I can start feeding my seedling when it has 2 true leaves? And can I feed it when it’s in a solo cup or should I transplant first

Thank you. So basically if you used ocean forest you can wait to feed nutrients until 2-3 weeks because the seed has nutrients and the soil has nutrients. Mix that with coco/pearlite 70/30 and baby you got a stew goin’ then when you do start feeding with nutrients ease up the amounts. I’m glad you got the clarification we all desired. Use the 3 as one.

I save a bunch of gallon water/ice tea bottles and keep a bunch of different strength mixures laying around. Makes for easy application when the weeks call for different strengths.

@@rexluger1940 Yes I did. I did the sledgehammer flush and then I did four straight days of straight water flush. For peppers, I don't flush since they're only growing in my house for 2 months and then they go outside
@@86peppers thanks, but isn’t the flush to keep excess fertilizers from getting into the food and changing the taste? Or are you saying that you are only feeding them while they are inside?
@@rexluger1940 for peppers I don't flush since they go outside after 2 months. For other plants that stay inside until harvest, i flush for that very reason. You can also flush to remove a buildup of salts leftover from too much fert. Helps u start over in case u get nute locked. For me though I don't want non-organic chemicals in my fruits so i flush em out. I'm going to try Agrothrive next season.

Ah yeah, it's a tough schedule to follow for sure. I've had plants that loved the trio and others that did not. Especially autos. I've really been digging the masterblend lately. Fully synthetic tho. Npk numbers are insane. I only do half strength tho. I should prob do a video on it... 🤔

whoops. well I am 2 weeks into seeds in ocean forest. I guess at this point we will just have to see. The trio is waiting though. Thanks for the tips
I use a 1 liter cold drink bottle cut a little over 1/4 from the top an turn it upside down in the bottom end with a wick punch or burn holes in the top part i cut for air roots then i put Ocean Forest in the top bringing the wick up in the middle an place my plant in it "and water it " not with liquid fertilizer water@5.7- 6.8ph" I've been doing this for years with no tip burns are other problems resulting from dry and liquid fertilization.
Sounds like a pretty hi tech system. If it works don't break it! 🤘

I don't use the bloom first 2 weeks just half dose of grow big because foxfarm living soil holds what you need in big bloom nitrogen is really what your young plant needs 👍🏼

After harvesting, should I go back to step 4 until I see flowers again, and then continue as you described to produce the next harvest? I am growing peppers exclusively indoors and expect to harvest perennially (fingers crossed, if all goes well!)
Thanks Jay! Pepper plants will sprout peppers at all different times so there is no 1-time harvest and then it all starts over again, so there is really no flushing that can be done. I try to stick to organic fertilizer if it's something I'm eating. I've not given much thought to growing peppers perennially inside so I never thought about fert for that use case. If you end up doing the ff trio I'd guess that you'd stay on week 5 forever?

Very good info. I'm using the trio fertilizer for the first time. Well second. I freaked out because I had fungus gnats and couldn't get rid of them so I ripped out plant and throw out soil. I over watered and messed up.
Thank you! For fungus gnats I fill the top of the container with 1" of sand. Also bury the bottom too. Works like a charm 👌
@86peppers your saying put a layer of sand huh? Again this is really my first grow. I bought ocean forest along with happy frog and fox farm fertilizer. It's all trial and error until I can get everything dialed ín .
@86peppers I don't know why but I question everything I've read and watch. They're are really good videos that are educational. I really want to pull this off and grown my own medicine. I have a green thumb. It's just so many steps. I'm learning as I go. I'm more of hands on
@@joescott4545 there is a TON of snake oil in this industry and tons of sponsored people trying to sell you stuff. The best advice I can give is to get a notebook and take very good notes. If you have the ability to grow multiple plants, experiment. I also prefer to learn from industry experts with degrees like Dr Bruce bugby. The Mr Grow It channel also hosts a lot of industry experts.

When mixing the fox farm trio is there a certain order to mixing. I have been told to use tiger bloom first. I can’t find info on this.
I actually have a part 2 video in the works. I called Fox Farm a little while ago and this was one of the questions I asked. The answer is no LOL. It doesn't matter how it's mixed just that they are not all mixed together by themselves. - i.e. add the first product to a gallon of water. Stir. Add the second product to the gallon of water. Stir. Repeat

Do you know if the soil schedule vs happy frog schedule will impact the growth while using these 3. It’s used differently than the soil method as you show the soil method. I don’t wanna hurt my plants
I'm not sure I follow. Is there a different feeding schedule for happy frog soil? These days, I like to use a soil that does not contain any nutrients so I can start my Fox Farm trio regimen at any time. I have been favoring the ProMix red garden bags that are just peat, perlite, and mycorrhizae.
Do you regular water once a week too or fertilizer every time
I usually just do once a week, usually every Sunday . In the beginning that's sometimes all they need. As the plants get older and need more frequent feedings, I'll water with ph water that's been left out to dechlorinate.
How often should you use big bloom and grow big while in the 4 week? Once or twice a week?
I personally only feed once per week. But some people measure the ec in their water to determine how hungry their plants are, which helps to gauge how frequently to fertilize.

@@melvinmccoy72 just remember half strength and less for autos at first to see how they adjust. You might never need to go stronger than that throughout the entire grow.

Im new to growing. I have one clone that I purchased today. The clone is basically in very very early veg. When should I start giving nutrients and should I start out with just grow big from fox farm? I also have been composting. Should I use nutrients or Should I top dress with compost instead, this early on.

It's chicken poop so it does have a bit of an odor for the first couple days after application. I apply once per month. Home Depot has the best price/pound if they carry it in your area.

What if you are growing a small autoflower should I use less? or follow this Thanks.
The doses get gradually more potent as the plant matures. I have seen some autos be more sensitive to nutes than others. Personally, I would do everything half strength to start and see what happens. Flush regularly, see how that strain responds, and take notes. Luckily, autos have a shorter life span 😂
@@86peppers Hey thanks for the reply one more question it says to feed every other watering but I'm in a 3-gallon pot so I would be feeding 3 times in almost one week and I have seen the same size auto in a 7-gallon pot they would be feeding once every two weeks how many times a week should I feed to be on the safe side? @@muppetonmeds the size of the plant should not effect frequency, just the amount of water per feeding. As a general rule, I only fertilize once per week. Some plants can handle more, some not. I like to pour enough water until I see it coming out into the tray. If I have to water more than once per week I will give it straight ph'd water. Nutes only once per week. Does that make sense?

@@muppetonmeds it's all a bit of trial and error until you get to know how the specific strain responds. If you can grow more than one of the same strain then you can really do experiments of different mixures/frequency and directly compare the results. Good luck!
How to do i flush i looked up videos but im confused by these videos im seeing 5 gallon water jugs which i don't have i just want to flush the nutes out of my plant when it done and ready. Please help, recommend a video even though i've seen a few or tell me in the simplest way to do it just water it with regular water for a week straight every day im in a 5 gallon fabric from beginning until end photoperiod seed those are some of things i have, plus a spider farmer sf1000 led tent?

Flushing is when you put so much water in that it rinses all the salts and nutrient build up, using just water for 5 days isn’t the same as flushing, fox farms recommends sledge hammer to mix with regular water I would just run 5 gallons of regular water and that should do the trick. You want to see water pouring out from the bottom of the pot quite a bit of it
@@Tony777Zz So all at one shot water my 5 gallon fabric pot when its about ready for harvest flush it with 5 gallons of tap water? And shouldn't i flush it with ph leveled tap water? And won't running so much water expose alot of the plants roots when you put a little too much water on one spot when trying to water my plant and possibly drown the plant?
@@goldengod87 perhaps dump a gallon in everyday for 5 days. You want a lot of water running out of the bottom of the bag. This might be tricky with grow bags since a lot of the water is going to run out of the sides so you want to make sure that it gets down through the bottom and drains out. Flushing the soil. This is typically done a week before you chop the plant so pH ing the water is not necessary. I also wouldn't worry about exposed roots because the plants not going to be around much longer. This is from what I have read, I will let more experienced people chime in here.

What size pot should the cannabis be in? I think a gallon of water would be too much for this size pot
I rarely mix up a gallon. I usually do 32 oz if feeding one plant or 64 if feeding two.
I usually use around 3 gallon pots. But have gone up to 6 gallon pots. I found that I would rather have more of a variety in my tent rather than two big plants. So, for me in the beginning/ later stages I usually feed 32 oz but when they are thirsty they can definitely take down 64 no problem. I made myself a little cheat sheet with the conversions for half and quarter strength mixtures so I wouldn't have to do the math every time! It also really helps to use Fox farm's metric chart. Really helpful when doing the math. They have the metric charts on their site.

Absolutely! Probably not needed, but it wouldn't hurt. There's definitely less expensive options (and without bat guano).

@char26104 I just figured not everyone would be cool with bat poop in their house. It's a bit Overkill for house plants since it's a micronutrient blend designed for flowering plants. So, short answer, it's not intended for house plants but it's okay to use. I would rather use something inexpensive designed for house plants.

Lol, according to FF you would start using Tiger Bloom when you start seeing buds/flowers, which they indicate might start happening around week 5. You can keep repeating step 4 until you see bud/flowers.

FF says 2 weeks, but I'd personally wait a bit longer. OF has a ton of nutes that will feed the plants for 1 month at least. I have 2 grows going now at 6 weeks and they are still super dark green and thriving..
i notice no one really talks about how mixing the trio drastically changes the npk ratio of your feeds. I assumed fox farms has a formula for npk that uses all the products listed on their feed schedule so simply feeding at the recommended doses for only the trio would be incorrect as far as npk goes from what I understand. For example week 3 calls for 6ml of bb and 3ml of gb but this npk comes out to 2-1.6-1.8 not very optimal for veg growth so what I do is mix them to get a 3-1-2 or 3-1-1 which is what I see most people recommend for vegging then I dilute it to my desired ppms or ec. Any opinions on this?
In your example, week 3 calls for 6 teaspoons (29.5ml) of BB & 3 teaspoons of GB (which is a micronutrient that doesn't really affect NPK until you start adding in TB at week 5. But then you can see the BB tapers off. IMO these feeding schedules are for people that want a (relatively) easy process of feed and forget. There are just too many variables to consider like nutrients that might already be (or not be) in the soil (which I find to already be wildly inconsistent), feeding amount, and strain/plant tolerance. People really diving into the weeds with ppm/ec calculations are probably using more high end nutes or living soil. We know that plants need N when growing, P when fruiting/flowering, and K for disease resistance, so I've since been using a loosely based schedule of my own concoction using the dr earth organic liquid trio and judge based on plant response. This is about as technical as I get. If I had the time and could find a strain guaranteed to be similar I would grow multiple and run experiments of different strengths to see how the plants react.
@@86peppers thanks for the response, I am trying to learn this stuff. I thought npk is calculated by volume and by mixing gb and bb in equal amounts you can calculate the new npk of your mixture. I put the amounts into a fert calculater and thats how I got the npk i mentioned, which to me seems a big difference from the 3-1-2 that most people seem to agree on for vegging. It seems to me also that the ratio is more important than the numbers themselves as far as being high or lower strenghts , since they are diluted to the desired ec/ppm anyway. Like am I thinking about this all wrong or do you understand what Im saying?
@@johndoegta2189 I think I get what you're saying. Yes, if you mix GB and TB you would be feeding your plants 8-12-8. I think the ratio is important since plants need N throughout their entire grow, but I think most people really just focus on N during veg, P during flower, and K towards the end. That's what the pdf feeding schedule is trying to do - take the guesswork out of when they *think* your plants will need these nutrients. I have never really heard of a general consensus on the actual value of NPK as you mentioned. Every fert is different. Look at the synthetic stuff which has like 20N. And there's the fish fert that some people swear by that just has 6-0-0. IMO, I think casual home growers just try out different products and schedules until they find whatever works best for them.

I tried following this schedule too but I could never get the weeks to line up. I see Nitro is important during veg, POG during flower, and GB towards the end. So I just make sure I give them these things at the right times.
There's also Agrothrive which has just 2 liquid ferts, one for veg and one for bloom. Super simple.
FIRST TIME GROWER. Im using foxfarm half ocean forest and half fox farm happy frog soil on my 3 week and 2 day old photoperiod gsc feminized plant in a 5 gallon fabric pot i planted the seed without germination and it still sprout and was told i could wait a month before i start to use this 3 pack of nutes because of the soil im using. Well Its been 3 weeks and 2 days should i wait like one more week or a couple more days and finally start with the fox farm Big Bloom by adding half the amount needed to a gallon of water? And how much water should i be giving my 3 week old photoperiod plant now and once i start to add nutes the same fox farm trio in this video and i have the schedule, so i also just feed it meaning water it only twice a week with the nutes it needs for that particular week? I almost forgot im asking how much water should i be using because im not transplanting my grow ever and my 3 week old plant, a few people said i should be giving it a gallon of water. But im afraid thats too much and it'll drown my plant.
I'm not sure about growing that particular type of plant. But in my experience less water is always better than too much. Also, I'm finishing an experiment where i tried to see how long the nutes last in ocean forest/HF. I'd say a good 2 months before the plants started stressing. So, imo, there's no harm in waiting a bit longer if u wanted.

Hi Kevon, my experience is more with hot pepper plants, however it is indicated in the fox farm feeding schedule that all three are to be used together when the plants are flowering. Although the plants still need nitrogen in the grow big, it's not as important during the flowering stage. But Big Bloom and tiger bloom definitely are.

I should have clarified. My pepper plants are inside for only 2 months before they get transplanted outside, around memorial Day. They are not blooming inside so there's no need to use the tiger bloom. Once the plants are outside I just use espoma garden tone (granular) once a month for the rest of the season. (Along with all other plants outside). The npk is balanced enough imo.
Other flowering plants that stay inside will get the full FF trio treatment. Along with calmag.
@@86peppers I'm using the Fox Farm Trio along with cal/mag this year. Thoroughly impressed with the results. I felt that the Fox Farm feeding schedule was a bit complex for my 93 yo Mom to follow. Got her the Garden-tone instead. She is loving the results on her jalapenos & cowhorns. So many peppers she is having to give some away. Thanks for the advice.
Forgot to mention. Sister used some of my Mom's Garden-tone on her bucket vegetables. Best year she has ever had for her bucket garden.
@@rondorriety8090hell yeah! 🤘 That stuff is awesome! Strangely however, this last bag I opened smelled so bad. The stank was real. I don't know if I got a bad batch or the chickens got into some nasty stuff but this was absolutely repulsive. Stinks up my entire shed. Definitely do not apply it if you plan on spending time outside near the garden.

Yeah, that's what I do. Just water with the mixture until it starts to come out of the bottom.
I'm new to gardening, I'll be trying to grow hot peppers. I saw that you said to use the fertilizer at half strength and once a week. Do I use a whole gallon per pepper plant when fertilizing? I'll be growing them outdoor in pots in either a 2.5 or 5 gallon pots.

so if i use the ocean forest potting soil to start, i shouldnt have to add any plant food until a few weeks after transplant but starting at the dosage required for the age of my plant, right? because its not going to be a seedling by the time i transplant it. im just trying to understand that because its not that clear in the video.
Ocean Forest will provide a good month or 2 of fert. So If you sow with OF, I would wait one month before using these ferts. Then, if your plants have 2 true leaves or less start with the "seedlings" week. If they have 3 sets of true leaves or more start with week 2. (Half strength)

I have found that less is more when using any fertilizer.. cut the feeding to half the recommended dosage.. then as the plants grow gradually add a stronger mix of fertilizer.. my experience has shown to work because the plant is only able to uptake what it needs and as you become more familiar with this method you will find burning the plants can happen when using the recommended amount,,, grow in peace

Well surely I've been doing it all wrong cause i have mixed all three from seed to harvest every three weeks@ 6.8 although i use Ocean forest with out Liquid Fertilizer(all three) until about 1 month so far so good is all i can say !!!

I did an experiment giving seedling fox farm Grow Big at half and full strength once a week for 2 weeks and they were fine. I would probably wait until you have a couple sets of true leaves though. And make sure the soil they are in does not provide any nutrients of it's own.

I don't feed my plants the first month using fox farm oceanic mix soil. Has everything you need for the first several weeks. I'm not growing peppers though...
Yes, this is also what FF recommended to do. I'm wondering if you could get away with more than a month though. I used FF trio at half strength and it still burned my plants 🤷🏻♂️

Hi Joe, would I be able to use this fertilizer trio for pepper plants that have overwintered, second year plants. I see a lot of information for seedlings but I have plants that are now a year old and would like to begin fertilizing them as the growing season is starting. Would I just need to repeat week 4's feeding schedule until I see flower buds?
Hi! These can be used for plants at any age. Just adjust the mixture accordingly. Yes, I would just repeat step 4. Check out 2:54 in the video!

Thank you! I've actually never done a foliar feeding. I apply the fertilizer directly on the soil. Sometimes I bottom feed too. Edit: The fertilizer mixed in water of course 🤣
@@86peppers Thank you for the fast response. I just applied the Week 5 schedule (my plants have flowers and some smaller peppers already). I also followed the 50% dilution tip (1.5tsp, 1tsp, 1tsp) per the instructions. Will apply this every Sunday. ;).

@@86peppers yes…the are in 5G fabric pots. I have 1 Ghost, 1 Habanero, and 1 Jalapeño. They get direct Florida sunlight. These are the first pepper plants I have grown. Trying to be extra cautious.

L O L. Well, in this gardening world, there is a big debate, and there’s a line in the sand that is drawn organic versus synthetic. I must admit I am totally organic, but it becomes so much work from fungus gnats to just slow releasing fertilizer so I was wondering could I do a little synthetic but still keep my organic stand so I begin to sneak around to find they are others just like me lol it looks like I can’t look down on the synthetic so I’m in bracing and using the best of both worlds. Love the video just what I was thinking of doing this will really help me and save some time. So, I’m taking off my organic snob hat. I apologize synthetic. I would totally do all organic while my plants are indoors if I could find something odorless. FF ocean/frog have enough nutes to carry the aeedlings for 2 months so I don't need to add anything. Once the plants go outside I use organic Espoma garden tone fert.
How often do you fertilize? I just started adding this to my plants on Saturday and I'm assuming I'm at week 5. It says "up to two times per week" but is that the way to go for peppers?
I usually do it once per week at half strength. But once I switched to Ocean forest and Happy frog soil I don't need to fertilize at all while they are inside for the first 2 months.

When you say half strengths, do you literally mean instead of 6 tsp of Big bloom and 2tsp of grow big in week 2. I would do 3tsp of big bloom and 1 tsp of grow big?

I have been using this exact stuff for mine other than my pH balance everything was perfect until I tried to drop my pH by using vinegar and added a little Epsom salt but what happened was my plants started to dry out even though they kept their color green they did not turn brown or orange or yellow or anything like. They dried up to a crispy Green Leaf what did I do wrong?
Hey, I don't use epsom on plants. I've read enough studies that prove it's not as effective as people believe. Most of these household remedies take a long time and these plants only live a short while. Vinegar is toxic to plants. I'd keep it simple. I use the ph down stuff. That's really it. amzn.to/3Ykd1pV

If the week on the schedule calls for multiple fertilizers, yes you mix them all together in the same gallon of water.

Hi there, from my conversation with them, they don't recommend it. They have a separate line for hydro stuff, for example they have a grow big specifically for hydro. But, you should definitely give them a call. A person picks up the phone and they are super helpful and nice.

Everything mentioned has been my experience with bell peppers and tomatoes in containers.
1.) I've found no plant that does not enjoy germinating directly in Happy Frog.
2.) EXCELLENT recommendation on 1/2 strength nutrients. Tiger Bloom can burn you if you're not careful. You can always increase as needed or try more on your next grow. Journal.
3.) CalMag for blossom end rot on tomatoes and usually necessary for "tomatoes" as well.
Oh thanks so much for the kind words! Thanks for the tip on germinating and happy frog. That's good news for the double cuppers out there who don't want to be bothered with seed starting mixture. I think with peppers we can get away with a lot more since we typically only do this for a couple months until they go outside. Then I let nature balance it out. But for others that grow the THC type plants, there's a lot more scrutiny involved especially with pH.
If your outdoor get some bone meal, fish bone meal, this will be better then cal-mag

Sure, i would still start at the beginning (1st week) just get them used to the fert.

@@Lucas-gu6py oh gotcha, well then, I suggest half strength at first to see how they react. I would continue the dose you gave for another week and check for signs of stress. If all looks good then continue through the weeks. Of course, this is just my opinion and depending on the lifespan (photo/auto) you'll need to adjust accordingly.

Super confused. I was told 1/2 HF and 1/2 OF with added perlite was ok for seedlings.
In my other video "ocean forest vs happy frog" i had pretty good results germinating seeds in these soil, although FF doesn't recommend it. Also, I didn't find the need for adding perlite.
I killed my plants And i dont know why i Used this soil and Ive Watered them every day and they got big right around 2 weeks to 3 weeks in they started to curl from the bottom leafes they also turned yellow and dry I was told this is lack of nitrogen What can i do too fix This problem.
Maybe get a PH meter and make sure the water is 6.5 ph
