In contemporary Dutch, “een bede” still means “a prayer” or “a humble request”, albeit a bit formal. “Bidden” is our verb meaning “to pray” and the common word for a prayer is “een gebed”. Thank you for this lecture on St. Bede.

Please never mention a number around St. Bede! He'll go on for 3 paragraphs on the significance of that number...
    Oooops, I said 3. 😅

St. Bede was Catholic, but not Roman Catholic. He was Orthodox, as were St. Patrick, Gildas, Benedict etc. There was no Roman Catholic Church officially until after the Schism of 1054 A. D. Prior to that all Christians were Orthodox Christians.

No. St. Bede refers to the Pope wielding pontifical power "over all the world". erickybarra.wordpress.com/2018/10/29/st-bede-the-venerable-historian-universal-papal-primacy-of-the-roman-see/

C'mon, brother - you must see that by that logic, that there was also no Orthodox Church officially until after the schism. The truth is that prior to the schism, all Christians were Catholic Christians. And as I will say in the next episode, the authority of the Papacy was one of Bede's important themes. Bede would have considered himself a Catholic, part of the universal Church with its headquarters at Rome. He certainly understood that it was the Petrine office that guaranteed the unity and the orthodoxy of the universal Church. And especially as a westerner, in England - a place evangelized by missionaries sent by, and under the direct authority, of the Pope - St. Bede would seem to be the last person about whom you could make that argument.

Although there were pagans and split tribes all over the place, England saw many devout Christians - since AD38 via Joseph of Arimathea - !!! - LONG before the Roman Catholics came (first to Kent)...
The old Celtic.crosses all over the British Isles make this clear.
These very early Christians - as we know - did not agree with some things that later came from Rome...
Anyway, I am from Kent originally (now Mexico) and see much good from the main Churches including the then Orthodox/Roman Catholic creed that came over with St Augustine to Canterbury in the 6thC that led to the conversion of all of England and led to Bede, etc.
True Christ is in the hearts of ALL true children of.God... And these children exist across sectarian lines. True brothers - disciples - saints know this to be true.
Bede refers to the legendary belief that Christ came as a young man to Avalon with His great-uncle Joseph of A. (the rich tin merchant on one of his several trips to Cornwall's mines... Many of us (such as Queen Elizabeth II) still believe that their may be truth to the legends of Glastonbury that there marked the spot (St Mary's{?) of the first Christian church on Earth, founded by Joseph in AD 38 after Christ's ascension - before Joseph died there in.Avalon....
William Blake's poem, Jerusalem, was not his pure imaginative invention - it was at the very least based on strong folklore - or legend - that simply has refused to die for so many strange clues still exist today - things that are at least so astoundingly curious.
It may be beyond us now to ever know such mysteries.
BUT we do know the one thing that truly matters: Jesus Cbrist, our King of kings, died to save us - and rose again to conwuer death - leading us all to the Father and the New Kingdom of the New Earth to come.
God Bless all brothers and sisters - and all those yet to come on board - in Christ's name.
(God Bless His English people to repent and come good again ❤).

@@matthewstokes1608 And did those feet in ancient time
      Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
      On England's pleasant pastures seen?
I love that song, even if it's not exactly historically accurate ;^) - and FWIW, I think we have Celtic Christianity to thank for some of the early background of our Sacrament of Confession and Penance, as well as a beautiful prayer tradition. Thanks for your comment!

@TheOriginalChurch Thanks for the series you have made... God Bless the Church of Rome, and Eastern Orthodox Churches, Coptics, Anglican (nkw GAFCON and the ACNA), and our various Protestant brothers and sisters....
ALL those who have personally been chosen by God, become a new man, and are now guided today by the Holy Spirit, being in Christ's One and Only TRUE Church.
He alone will decide who is who and judge us all individually.
God Bless you on your own unique journey Home, brother.
