    I paid 400 CAD for a real wool jacket 8 years ago. It's still holds up after daily use. A button came off, but that's about it. Stitching is fantastic. You try the rest, or buy the best. Good gear lasts for a long time and holds up...matters if you want an item that will become apart of you, or an item that you will replace sooner than later.
    I would gladly pay 350USD for a jacket that will hold up for that long, or longer.

    I spent that amount on a jacket. Mine was on the Filson Mackinaw Cruiser. I love that jacket. Plus it has a life time warranty.

    I agree with what you say about Made in USA and waxed canvas/natural materials. We need to support American workers. Now if I have a choice, I almost always buy made in USA because I'm an American (not Mongolian!). I have been buying custom knives made by US knife makers and I also buy a lot of Filson gear. I'll check out ColdSmoke's website to see what they have also. Thanks for sharing.

    I like Carhartt coats too. They are not quite as stylish as this but they are rugged and made in the good old USA. Not as expensive either.

  • @ogenmatic

    I like having those side pockets zippered. That's where my gloves go when they come off & there's nothing worse than having only one glove (or none!) when your hands are cold enough to put them back on. Been there - done that.
    Don't mind paying some extra for US made but that's more than I've put into any coat for any purpose. But it does look very nice, is well thought out, and well made.

  • @MoranGuyVideos

    I appreciate quality but it is a bit expensive for my opinion for a coat....

    • @Dunkingsonn
      @Dunkingsonn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I once used to be skeptical on expensive products, but after stepping into the domain of high quality and pricing for things I use on a daily basis or for its utility, I never looked back. Mainly because quality tends to last a little longer (provided you give it the care it requires)
      My jacket is pretty cheap mainly because I don't usually spend more than an hour in the cold during winter and most of the days we don't even get below the freezing point so I can last for a while with a cheap jacket. There'll be people who work outdoors in places where winters are harsher and longer, and they might find it better to invest in a quality jacket.

    • @OutsideAndStuff
      @OutsideAndStuff 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes sir. I've bought multiple versions of cheap things only to have ended up spending more if I had just gone with the high quality to begin with.

    I shop Best Made for the cottage industry stuff they put up in small batches, when I can afford it. Some of their ads and marketing is overwrought but I have never, out of 10 or so products bought, had a negative experience. They kinda just put all the cool finds that we would all usually celebrate in a glossy, hipstery veneer, and add a small finders fee. I really don't get the hate the angry people cast on them. Especially as loads of ther stuff is US made.

    When buying gear that you will use in the outdoors, It all comes down to construction, materials and customer service. I've easily paid +300 on down jackets...because I go out into the mountains and need to be able to trust my gear. But I also only need to buy it once, because if something does happen, the manufacturer is going to help me in fixing it. The same goes for a lot of my gear. Big Agnes, Nemo, Sierra Designs. Call these people up and talk to them. They want to help you. My response here is long winded, like this review ;), but I live by the "buy once, cry once" moto. If I need the gear to survive, I will pay the price once and be done with it. Thanks for the review. And why didn't you call us turtles in the intro!?

    Hey, thanks for the heads up on Cold Smoke. I will check them out. I try to shop American as much as I can. Big Bill Flannels, Vermont Flannels, and Filson are one of my favorites. I have a Mackinaw Cruiser by Filson and love it. Yes, I did gave to save enough money for a few years but totally worth it!!! Sorry for the novel. But how do you like that jacket compared to your Woolrich Hunt Coat?

  • @msilverhammer
    @msilverhammer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, this is a very nice jacket, the style is nice, and many people like you, prefer the old fashioned, rugged look of waxed canvas.
    There are probably better performing modern fabrics, but again, some like this type of jacket.
    I guess the bottom line on how someone would look at this jacket, mainly depends on a few things...first, does one actually like the style of the jacket?
    Second, does one have available funds or expendable income, and a willingness to spend those funds to purchase the jacket?
    Third, will the jacket provide the specific performance that one requires for the tasks at hand?
    The final issue that I can think of off the top of my head, and there may be more issues to consider, would be the made in the USA issue.
    Some of us will only buy made in the USA, some do not care, and look for the best value, (Price + Quality + many other factors), and some like you, only care that the worker who made the garment received a fair wage, which is hard, if not impossible to determine, as the wage information is probably not available, or just plain subjective, as fair is different to everyone.
    So if I had expendable income I would probably buy the jacket, as I like many of the features, and the style, but because I need to prioritize and spend my money on items like food, gas, and housing costs, I will not purchase the jacket, but instead continue to search for deals that are 40% to 80% off retail prices.
    Basically, I need to find extreme deals, on gear and clothing that I need to perform a specific task, or to perform at a specific level, at the best cost possible.
    I have been very successful in doing that, and sometimes just have to pass on a purchase of an attractive jacket just because it is not in the budget, and therefore not feasible or practical for me to purchase.

    Heyho, how tall are you? thinking about ordering one from the US to germany. But i am not quite sure about the sizes. wondering if L is to wide for me but i am 190 cm tall. So, is the jacket more slim fit or wide fit?
    Thanks for an answer!

  • @ilbob
    @ilbob 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would suggest this.
    to me this is not anything really practical for the vast majority of people. while it has some nice features the pockets seemed just a little under-sizedl. it looked to me like the sleeve was a little short. the opening at the neck is just inexcusably bad design. I think a version of this that fixed the pocket issue and the opening at the neck and ran the sleeves a little longer would solve most of the issues for me.
    however for me I would take out the lining entirely and make it basically just a cover jacket for Wind and Rain protection.
    a a hood would be nice too. especially if it could zippered into a compartment when it wasn't needed.

    i dont like how they use giant buttons that are designed to LOOK like slot buttons but arent. yes, these are more easily repaired but the slot button is FAR stronger. while you can sew a button back on you cant do it in the middle of a blizzard so id rather have buttons that wont fall off rather than ones i could put back on.

    For me waxed canvas is ok but a bit of a pain to own, rewaxing, very heavy, you sweat a lot as it doesnt breath, and super expensive.
    There are a lot of waxed jackets around for a lot less.
    I make some waxed canvas products, like tarps, last a while but just too heavy for most uses.
