I'm in despatch for a major gourmet pork product supplier. I pick the product from the chiller an load them into refrigerator trailers. I'm on £12.50hr to put the sausages on a trailer. The 10phr driver you referred to needs to have a serious think about what he got himself into.if I'm getting paid more to put sausages on the trailer then the driver is to transport them then something is properly fked.

Worked as agency class 1 for 4.5 years for a large department store. Asked to sit in on cpc training. Told no chance. Left as I was not going to spend £300
on 5 days training to earn £11.34 per hour. Company did six assesments to get a replacment driver. He did £52000 pounds of damage to a loading bay/shutter.
    Great corporate management!!

They can only see as far out as the front of their noses. Why on earth would you get rid of an experienced driver over £300 and why should you be expected to pay for something that you only need for work. £11.34 is shocking for a class 2 driver let alone a class 1.

I work for a family owned and run firm in the Midlands, they’re known for taking on new pass class 2 and 1. They took me in with zero experience and after 2 years they put me through my class 1 training. I think I’m on a good hourly rate, but most importantly I’m treated like a human not a number.

I always said I'd never work for a big company for that reason, Grew up around the industry with my grandad and he was with turners and knew them personally and then went into scrap.....I grew up in the lorry or in the yard with him and his boss was amazing with me as a child, instilled and reinforced the fact you can't go wrong when your boss is as human as you and personally knows you and gets your struggles when they may happen! Funny how it's always the small company's willing to give chances when they have alot more to loose if it ever went wrong!

Stobart's were the original industry disrupters, got great PR for the smart uniforms and the named trucks. While we were applauding this new look, we didn't see the lower pay and the end of Day/back/night shift. Drivers shifts starting at 1am, 2 am etc was the beginning of the end for decent conditions for their drivers.

Large company's always do the same, supermarkets do the same, they force farmers to take the lowest pay for their products so they can give their customers cheap prices (and improve their profit margin). I have a farmer friend who refused to lower his prices, he now works farmers markets and earns 4/5 times the amount he earned with the supermarket.
OK we all want cheap prices but a fair days money for a fair days work is not too much to ask, my farmer friend was working for such a small profit and the supermarket still wanted cheaper prices.

    Coach driver here
    £14.50ph. Day work no overnights
I do 50 hours in three days generally 1 double man and two 15 hours
Only have to work 3 days a week now to get more than what I used to earn before the shortage/loss of polish drivers after brexit it was £9.15 ph and I used to to 5 over 7 then 6 over 7 cycles
Same three days every week too and have 4 days downtime between each work spread. I’m never tired and always have more than enough time each week to do my own things. It’s a step by my employer to work with people for best balance. It works and creates lots of driver overtime availability

Its been going on since the early 2000's lots of small firms went bust & the big boys started taking over, think of all the names that dissapeared. I did 3 years with DHL which made me appreciate the small company. I work for a company with 6 trucks, only the boss to deal with, he drives as well, no planners or hangers on you get looked after, proper overtime rates, cabs with microwaves. DHL had everone as LTD companies, so they did not have to pay holidays, pensions etc, always treated like children.

@@CarlSab9088 DHL bosses should wear a mask and red and black striped jumper. All the other big names are the same. HOYER stands for Hand Over Your Employment Rights. My gaffer is a proper old fashioned haulage man, he drives and loads and his wife does the accounts he'll never be rich but loves haulage with a passion, but sadly that type of character & company is slowly dying out. I am a wagon driver not a steering wheel attendant. I always tell young lads getting into driving, only use the big names for a bit of experience whilst you wait for a good little familly business to advertise for drivers.

Every company I've ever worked for (I was on agency for 5 years, so quite a few) has claimed to treat you like a human, not a number. I've yet to find one that delivers on that promise, and I'm what I'd describe as a 'good driver' - I get on with my work, don't complain, if it's safe and legal I'll get it done etc etc. Some disguise themselves quite well but the cracks appear after a few months. I ultimately gave up trying to find a 'decent company' and accepted that things are the way they are... I now drive fuel tankers for a huge company with the same spiel about valuing their workforce blah blah. I went in with very low expectations apart from the money, and I've not been disappointed. My advice - if you DO find a genuinely decent company that you really click with and have a good relationship with, don't fuck it up because it's a rare thing. Also, if you're in the midlands, accept no less than £17/hr on days. Really you should be looking for £19 plus minimum. Unless you're desperate, don't even call the ads that offer less than that.

Yer bang on mate, I left HGV work in the 80s because agency's were ruining the industry, I Spent 25 year driving buses in Glasgow for more money than an HGV driver was making, like yourself I now drive fuel tankers and as a driver of such a dangerous substance I still think we are under valued. Agency's are the way to go now due to the fact that you can now hold them to ransom as to where and when you can work as many big company's cannot get the drivers to move the goods. Its an undervalued necessity as jobs go and companies large or small should realise the need to have a happy well paid workforce earning what they are truly worth.

15 years ago I was on £9.80 for agency. Pay very low wages attract no drivers the industry collapses - no way of getting goods to end users, economy slowly collapses. There are jobs out there that do not affect your health as bad as a HGV driving job. You can work in some super markets on more money an hour and then as you will not get the hours you need get the gov to give you benefits. The problem with the decline in drivers has not gone away, the shelves in shops show this. Is this be design, you would like to think not but with what is being lied to you in the fake stream media it would be surprise anyone. ....

In the care homes carers used to get paid extra for working nights, Sundays, bank holidays and for overtime. The big companies bought enough homes that all homes had to do the same costings to compete, so staff now get no extra pay for nights, Sundays, bank holidays or overtime. It will happen to driving if you let it and believe you are worth no more than minimum wages.

I started on £16 a hour class 2. Then £18 a hour class 2 and now landed a £45k a year salary job on the books class 1 which shifts are around 8 hours a day. So works out around £20 a hour or more. Crazy when I speak to other drivers with so much more experience and better at the job than me on £13 a hour doing 60 plus hours a week at 50-60 years old. I started class 1 with an agency, Ltd company from day 1, they will find you work no problem! Always try and make sure your next job pays a better hourly rate than the previous, 5 years ago I was on £13.50 now I’m on £17 hr Ltd Mon-Fri no nights out no flat beds, just curtain side same truck each day for a small company, tell them what you want and what you won’t accept, register with a few agencies that accept Ltd drivers, advertise on job websites, update it regularly and you stay top of the list, pick and choose or it’s a race to the bottom. Totally agree with this post, there are way to many companies taking advantage over drivers hours and pay rates. The trouble is there are quite a lot of people prepared to work under these conditions, that’s what needs to change, if drivers stick together and refuse to work for those ridiculous hours and rates, I believe things will change, there isn’t enough drivers as is in this country, these companies will soon run out of options for drivers and have to put the money up, I think it is starting to in some driving industry’s but not all, food is good, building materials can be good, car transporting also ok 👍

The likes of stobart have an unfair advantage. They are that big they can order 100 scanias and get a few more free. They use that much diesel they can negotiate amazing deals. They can take on rookie drivers because they could run their own insurance like DHL do. So no pre conditions on driver experience meaning hiring no experience drivers for buttons. this means smaller operators can't compete on price. They came into Ireland on the Tesco contract years ago and for some reason couldn't get into the rest of the industry, maybe because of that relationship element between operator and client where pricing wasn't a major consideration. More about consistency and reliability. They left the tesco Ireland contract and DHL operate it now. Think all they have now is petrol tanker contracts with Circle K.

Nice to see a new vlog from you again. The thing about big companies is true. It is the same over here in Norway. Big companies that is owned by the state is using sub contractors and paying them crap wages. Always pushing them to do more for less money. The thing about agencie drivers over here, in my opinion, is that you are treated as a sub human. Always getting the worst gear, treated like crap by the people in the offices and so on. So over here it might be preferable to work directly for a company. But It might be hard some times to find a good company to work for. I have been driving for several different companies and several types of trucks, tipper trucks, store deliver, long distance and so on. And some years back it was a bit more relaxed even in the smaller companies I worked for. The phone was not ringing all the time and some guy in thebother end asking where I was and why I was late and stuff like that. But in the later years it has changed to more stress and drivers are being hunted like wild animals. They are talking about shortage of drivers. Well guess what, thank your selfs you f*cking idiots. You on the top brought this on your self. Pressing wages all the time makes the drivers disappearing. I do have self respect and I will never be a idiot behind the wheel being yelled at by some clown in a office that does not know the difference between a bicycle and a articulated truck. I have come to the conclusion that life is to short to spend any time or energy working for some one who treats me like crap. With all my experience they should be happy to have me driving their trucks not the other way around. Maby I sound a bit like the best driver in the world but I have been driving for 26 years so I want to say I have something to contribute with for a company.
Anyway. Take care and drive safe mate.

There definitely is exceptions. But the industry is broken over here as well. The big companies are pushing the prices down and demanding more and more. There are subcontractors who are working below the lawful limit for big companies, and some for state owned companies in Norway. They deny it of course but there is many examples of shady business.
Hope that the industry will get better sometime.

When I was working at NFT I was contract driver and most of the time I could pick and choose run. Sometimes they was pushing me 15 hours run. So what I done, I was taking night out after 13 hours, I have never ever been doing 15. Always night out after 13, because 15 is optional and not mandatory. Then they had to pay me nigh out allowance and after night out following day I was not working and company was paying me for 8 hours. Basically my duty was 4 on 4 off - done night out at 1st and 3rd day - so working only 2 says instead of 4, but getting paid for 4 days. After some time they just understood that there is just no point giving me long runs since agency can do that run maxing 15 with no night out and still coming next day. We should get about £20 M-F. If companies pay to agencies £20 plus and get different drivers every day who don't care, why don't the companies pay that to fixed drivers and get much better results????? I worked on agency for a big company for 18 months and saw a number of drivers go across to contract . Every one regretted it . I was asked a few times to sign up but politely declined. I'm still with my same agency now working elsewhere as the rates and flexibility suits me. Next twelve months will see a number of small companies folding ( reported in Truck & Driver ) due to recession and fuel costs. so there's a danger the rates drop back again . Raul could be the new Mick Lynch . ( might have to tone the language when talking to Good morning Britain ! ) Take care pal.

@@R88-w7k new passes rarely get contract work first off so agency gives you a chance . It's also good to try different types of work to see what suits you. You'll get the work the experienced guys don't want but the learning curve is good fun .
As Raul says once you sign up the mood changes as you are theirs now . Agency is less secure but the flexibility makes up for that imo.
      Good luck .

This is what ive found out moving to HGV work. Everyone takes breaks getting tipped, but as ive recently done cpc they are wise to this. VOSA now say you cant take your breaks at a place of work. You must now show a decent drive to your break. Everyone was complaining on the course as some said they have a cafeteria at work..it doesn't matter you must drive to your break.

Stobart was only option to gain that experience, I know it's crap pay but I hope that after 6 months I can find something better. Stay safe.

Passed my class 1 yesterday. So relieved😅 so yeah, I'm in this predicament at the moment. I'm busy moving house at the minute so not got anything lined up as yet, but I'm not sure which route to go to be honest so I'm gonna just try and see what works. I'd love to work 4 on 4 off, but I guess it's gonna be a case of whatever I can get at first. I'm curious about agency work but at the same time I like routine... I'm not keen on the idea of swapping about a lot. I dunno! Anyway, keep up with the vlogs mate, love watching and have done for a long while!

Loved your latest rant, Raul. It was interesting to hear an insider's viewpoint. Trouble is, the low wages, along with increased and varied workload is affecting every profession. Pharmacists are now being recommended instead of GP consultations, Health Care Assistants and Carers have to take on many more responsibilities than they originally signed up for and staff in supermarkets do everything from unpacking goods, cleaning, baking and everything else to ensure the shop is fully stocked and running smoothly.
Don't know if there's a simple fix for the way things are.

I am working for an Agency. Most of my summer work is in Europe. The wages are fantastic. However, I can only work in Europe for 90 days out of 180. This means that I have to find Agency work local to my home. Most Agencies near me only offer a couple of pounds per hour more than regular contract drivers. I like tramping but many companies will not pay for secure parking. This means I have to pay for secure parking myself or look at taking a shit in the bushes. Parking in the UK is very expensive compared to Europe and the facilities are nowhere near as good. I have tried all kinds of companies and driven containers, flat-beds, curtain-siders and box bodies. LHD and RHD. Manual and automatic. There is no such thing as bad experience when it comes to driving. Unfortunately, there is lots of bad experience around with different companies. I have to agree though, the bigger the company, the worse the office staff.

Hi Raul689, great and very honest video as usual BTW, in Northern Ireland as a HGV driver (C class) it is as normal that companies no matter small or big pay you between £10/hr and £12/hr if ya lucky and (CE class) a bit more £13/hr.
Isn't funny that truckers get payed such a silly money and ie Forklift operator getting £16/hr.
