Budget beginner bourbons- for me- WT 101, Basil Hayden, Buffalo Trace, Woodford, JB Black. I love jack Single Barrel, however I wouldn't put it on a budget beginner list. Great content fellas!!
This is some seriously funny s**t right here! Scott’s incredulity over Barts pick on the Jack is awesome😂😂. 130 proof for beginners- my man Bart!! “ I coined the phrase err boldly “ Scott almost fell out of his chair😂😂😂. Love you guys! Cheers and Narb Creek!
Great choices and I would agree to put the ECBP on the list so people new to bourbon get a chance to taste the WOW. You can usually find for $60 to 70 but it is worth every penny. BT to me is a great drink, so rounded and well balanced. A very easy sipper and at a reasonable price.
I'm with you Bart, ECBP 139.8 is what really got me into bourbons. The amount of flavor and how approachable it is at such a high proof is incredible. I give it to buddies when we do tastings and they're almost always impressed, even with very limited experience. It's not incredibly hard to find in plenty of the country as well...not always there but if you're out and about in stores on a regular basis you'll come across it for sure. Great pick!

So far tried: Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Bulleit Frontier, Makers Mark and Elijah Craig 12. For me the EJ12 takes it but I do have the Eagle Rare 10 on my list to try buy before the end of the year.
Thank you for this video!!! It's like you made it just for me. What would everyone recommend as the next step after these? Keep up the great work nice job gentleman

You guys have done some great videos but this has to rank up there with the best. There are a lot of videos out there that offer suggestions on beginner whiskies, but yours hit the nail on the head. All of your selections are available pretty much anywhere (except ECBP) and I think you gave a great selection of easy to drink whiskies that lead folks into something just a little more complex as your suggestions reached your #1 picks (E.C. Barrel Proof may be tough for a newbie). Thanks for making your videos!! Cheers from Delaware!!
Scott holding it down against the forces of Ridiculousness here. Bart thought he was filming the “you’ve had a few bottles of bourbon, try these next” video! Thank you for staying the course 😂
I have only tasted Jim Beam but I'm curious to know what else bourbons can offer. Now I ordered a bottle of Maker's Mark and Elijah Craig Small Batch. Thanks for the advice guys!
thanks megan! those are glencairn whisky glasses (labeled as the official whisky glass). Many reviewers and websites sell them. We have some available on our website scotchtestdummies.com with our logo!
I think beginner bourbon means something different to everyone. To me, a beginner bourbon is something that is introductory to bourbon, to get someone's feet wet. Nothing too crazy challenging, expensive, or complex, so for me my list would have to be: 5. Evan Williams single barrel, reasonably priced, decent flavor, usually around 8 years, recognizable brand. 4. Larceny: its a beautiful little wheater, I like it more than the Makers (in my opinion closer to the Makers 46). Sweet and mild with a touch of pastry, decent price point. Out of Heaven Hill, so plenty of exploration to be had. 3. Wild Turkey 101, higher proof, more complex but not off putting, good price point, avalible, known brand. 2. Elijah Craig small batch, great whiskey to learn about bourbon, 94 proof lets you know its there, but after you let it sit for 10-15 min a little bit of alcohol evaporates off and it opens up to be even better! 1. Buffalo Trace, in my opinion, this and the Elijah Craig are what bourbon is meant to taste like! If you take a friend through a flight of bourbons there is enough variation here to know which direction to send them.
Wish there were some Aussies doing this given the radical difference in pricing for some of these - ala Bulleit or Buffalo, which are close to 100 here.
@@ScotchTestDummies Some of it definitely gets pricey, including a few surprise ones (given I've looked at lists from the US about budget/budget-ish Bourbons: Elijah Craig ($84), Maker's Mark 46 ($86), Knob Creek ($94), Michters ($120). Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve (Standard and Double Oak), Elijah Craig, Maker's 46, Wild Turkey Rye, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, Wild Turkey 101 and Longbranch are all, locally, in my 'acceptable' price range (EC and MM46 only just). Just musing cause inherited my father's booze recently, found I really enjoy his Southern Comfort but not the Scotchs as much so figured maybe Bourbon is more my thing.
I guess I do qualify as a bourbon beginner according to Bart. Just picked up JDSBBP at Fuzzy Duck in Columbia, TN. I agree with Scott’s list, being more appropriate for beginners. Bart should’ve titled his list as 5 bourbons you have to eventually try.
Thanks again, gents. I wouldn't recommend high proof for beginners, because too many people seem to have a "brown liquor blackout" story and the high alcohol brings back bad memories (or lack thereof). Having said that, I love all of your choices.
I think the Makers mark is a good pick. I haven't drunk very much $25 bourbon I am also with Bart in thinking the JD single barrel taste great. What do you think about the wild turkey Kentucky spirit?
I'm gonna have to agree with Bart. Coming from Scotch I found most Bourbons tasted very similar. However after trying a few barrel proof bourbons such as Booker's and especially the Stagg Jr. I became a big fan of bourbon. Now I won't buy a bourbon unless it's barrel proof. Hopefully I can get my hands on the Jack Daniels Double Barrel and ECBP one day!
When I started drinking whiskey I found older whiskey were a lot smoother and easier to drink. Young whiskey like Makers Mark was horrible, when I started, but people always recommend for beginners.
Scotch Test Dummies I can enjoy it now that I’m passed the beginner stage, it was just one I couldn’t choke down when I started, if I go back to a lot of whiskeys that I couldn’t handle when I started I can enjoy most of them now.
I have to agree. I was getting vinegar notes from the mm46 and regular mm. I'm hoping the bottle will get better with time as slowly try drinking some now and then.
Great show guys. Bart, I love all your picks, but barrel proof is just too much for beginners. However, you could finish a beginner bourbon tasting with the ECBP and then it could work. JDBPSB is $65 here in Chicago - not exactly beginner pricing for a bourbon/Tennessee whiskey. I think I have to go with all of Scott's pick. Entertaining show. Thanks!
an excellent still reasonably priced bourbon. They've done several different bottlings and all that we've had have been excellent for the money. We have the 1792 Bottled in Bond waiting to be reviewed.
I overall agree with most of your picks. However, the barrel proofs are both a bit expensive and harsh for someone new, especially if they are new to drinking in general. Also, I have not even seen ECBP in Lincoln.
Good show boys. As a general rule, no barrel strength whiskey/whisky for beginners. NO SIR! There can be a few exceptions obviously (your wife being one), but I define a beginner as someone who may have tasted whiskey/whisky in a mixed drink once or twice or never at all. There's a good chance a powerful, complex whiskey like EC Barrel Proof will just scare them away,...and I ain't wasting my good stuff on them.
I'm with Bart on this, don't see anything wrong with cask strength for a beginner. After all, a seasoned scotch drinker can also be new to Bourbon. By the way, is that Bart yelling "yeehaw" in the musical intro?
Boom Hoy! You da man. and in regards to our music it is Dan Pancaldi our music man who hails from Canada. He is a very creative man and came up with that wonderful Yahooie blend of intro music. bart
I agree with you on the Makers Mark. rather cheap, but decent quality + easy access. and i would also recommend Four Roses small batch, subtle and smooth
Even in lower priced Bourbons, there is a lot of quality, a beginner can get even a bottle of old No 7, or even Jim Beam (yeah I know, one dimentional, lower end, bottom shelf), old crow, etc, and have a great Bourbon experience, from that you can go up, and, yes, Bulleit, Buffalo trace, Makers, Elijah, are not good, they are great!. I don't search for higher priced Bourbons , why do it if you have so many great ones at lower prices?. Great job as allways guys, It's allways a learning and fun experience!!!. Buena experiencia!
You guys are insane, in a good way. I feel sorry for you Scott, LOL. 2 barrel proofs - for beginners. Barts lost his mind. Keep doing what you're doing. Love watching your shows.
Bart did get that Jack Daniels single barrel double barrel for 49.99 because I got mine for that when I bought it sometime ago. Generally I can still find it in the Low 60.00 range around here but its getting harder to locate. Elijah Craig barrel Proof beginner bourbon? I mean I understand where you are coming from but I don't think it would be wise for someone starting out without someone to walk them through it. Ahhh, to each their own. Another great production.
I wouldn't have a single barrel in my beginners list since every bottle/barrel can be totally different. For example, my Double Barrel has zero banana, it is all about the black licorice. Bushmill's 16 is delicious but again a bit pricey for a beginners anything.
I kinda agree to disagree about the double barrel Jack... once they add maple charcoal filter it is no longer bourbon... whiskey yes.. lol.. but I'm not going to give a guy wanting to try his first couple cigars some humi filler bundle stick .. I'd give him something decent like romeo or fuente to start and maybe next time a Liga or something
It s a Bourbon. Aged in Kentucky, bottled in Germany and since 2013 some bottles are send back to america. It s sold in Germany for about 13 USD and in the US for about 23 www.whiskyintelligence.com/2013/09/pennypacker-kentucky-straight...
i am actually shocked with some of the ones that made the list. i dislike that spicy peppercorn bite that you get from the rye in most bourbons; so my first ones was makers 46 and 1792.
Good luck finding BP ECraig beginners. C-mon man... All of these are excellent bourbons though! Most (except ECBP) are in my cabinet and enjoyed on a regular basis. Great Video guys!
Bart went off the deep end again and apparently hit his head! I agree that Jack Daniels is technically bourbon, so I don't have a problem with that, but expensive barrel proof bourbon is not something for a beginner. I have the same issue with ECBP...its barrel proof, expensive and hard to find, so not a good choice for beginners for three reasons. I love all of the bourbons chosen except for Bulleit...I'm just not much of a fan of Bulleit...don't hate it, but just don't love it. Scott, great job! Bart, I get where you are trying to go, but I just don't think barrel proof is the correct approach for beginners, just like I don't think heavily peated scotch is appropriate for beginning scotch drinkers unless they are already used to strong flavored whiskeys.
Buy the Mrs. a Tenuta Ulisse Amaranta Italian red wine, @BART! well, I'm sure ye've had it. Deep and rich. Not cheap-o but affordable. #winepointers #wine
Darn it Bart, just because you like a bourbon does not mean it should be recommended for beginners. How can you advise someone new to bourbon to go spend $70 on something they may not even like. I think you have the wrong show for those bottles. But I do agree ECBP is an amazing drink, but I wouldn't give it to my wife hoping she becomes a bourbon fan. I enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.
It pains me (a little bit) to admit this, but in this episode, Scott is a genius. Ya, I know talking like that more than once could go to his head. In this case we just can't deny it. His picks were ...Einsteinian... compared to Bart's. He even clearly explains what would happen if you set a beginner loose with a cask strength, with a glass and without Bart there to keep him safe. Yowza! I also see Scott giving the camera a look like "I know I'm making a shortened version of this, so that's why I just sit here and let Bart go on..." (about ten times). Patience, and genius... great, like a bottle of Wow. (Disclaimer: I can talk like this because I usually side with Bart. Ha!)
Scott knew his picks were Einsteinian compared to Barts as soon as the filming stopped! Thanks Raster. And yes, good call on how I was staring at the camera waiting for Bart to stop knowing I would cut most of it out! Scott
Well, there are different types of beginners. Someone new to bourbon, but who has drank other high-strength spirits, probably wouldn't mind having a few barrel-proof bourbons among his first dozen or so bourbons. But someone who has never drank high abv spirits, yeah, leave the barrel-proofs out for them.
i was good to go until Bart brought out the ECBP.... I have been to 20 stores in my area and not once have I come across this... ever... The beginner is not going to be able to find this. Love ya Bart but nope nope and nope... maybe I am just jealous... hmm...
uh..Scott looked liked he was trying to hide behind his hand when Bart pulled out EC BP ;) you guys slept on a few good ones from other distillers though!
You guys are great, yeah Bart is kind of full of shit but Scott tempers him with his eyes alone. But if you want to learn about Bourbon, watch "Its Bourbon Night".
People will tell you that Jack Daniels that is not bourbon because they just so happen to be correct. Hey you with the cowboy hat, JACK DANIELS IS NOT A BOURBON!, it’s a sour mash whiskey, it’s on the stupid label. Yes they use the same recipe as bourbon except they add the leftover fermented mash from the previous batch, thus making it a sour mash whiskey. But the Lincoln county process is the only thing that makes JD a Tennessee whiskey. You with the cap, Buffalo trace is a great first choice.
haha thanks Jonathan (from the guy in the cap aka scott). Actually sour mash can be used with a bourbon i.e. Elmer T. Lee Sour Mash Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey for one. But JD uses the maple charcoal filter in the Lincoln County Process which is why most say it can't be a bourbon. We've heard that they could actually call it a bourbon if JD wanted to but they feel Tennessee Whiskey is an even better and more exclusive attribute.
Scotch Test Dummies On May 13th 2013, Bill Haslam, governor of Tennessee (TN) signed House Bill 1084, which created the first state law to define what can be called Tennessee Whiskey. The law defines TN whiskey as: a spirit manufactured in TN; filtered through maple charcoal prior to aging, also know as the Lincoln County Process; made from grain that consists of at least 51% corn; distilled to no more than 160 proof (80% abv); aged in new charred oak barrels; placed in the barrel at no more than 125 proof (62.5% abv); and, bottled at not less than 80 proof (40% abv). On 4 May 1964, the United States Congress recognized Bourbon Whiskey as a “distinctive product of the United States.” The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits (27 CFR 5) state that bourbon must meet these requirements: Bourbon must be made of a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn. Bourbon must be distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof (80% alcohol by volume). Bourbon must be aged in new, charred oak barrels. Bourbon may not be introduced to the barrel at higher than 125 proof (62.5% alcohol by volume). Bourbon which meets the above requirements and has been aged for a minimum of two years, may (but is not required to) be called Straight Bourbon. Bourbon aged for a period less than four years must be labeled with the duration of its aging. If an age is stated on the label, it must be the age of the youngest whiskey in the bottle. Only whiskey produced in the United States can be called bourbon. Sour mash is a process used in the distilling industry that uses material from an older batch of mash to start the fermentation of a new batch, analogous to the making of sourdough bread with a starter. The term can also be used as the name of the type of mash used in that process, and a Bourbon made using this process can be referred to as a sour mash Bourbon. “Sour mash” does not refer to the flavor of the Bourbon. Consider the mic dropped

Bart and the fisherman are definitely out for a pleasure cruise on this one. ha!

I'm with you Bart, ECBP 139.8 is what really got me into bourbons. The amount of flavor and how approachable it is at such a high proof is incredible. When is the top 5 Mexican Whiskies video coming?
We are down with that
Love ec but might be to complex for beginners
The regular small batch ec?
Four Roses Single Barrel or Wild Turkey 101?
good call on both of those too 321!
Damn! It's Hank 3 and terry funk!
Boom
i am actually shocked with some of the ones that made the list. i dislike that spicy peppercorn bite that you get from the rye in most bourbons; so my first ones was makers 46 and 1792.
shocked with Barts picks? Scott
I know Bart likes his spicy and slap you in the face notes and Makers mark don't have that.
Good luck finding BP ECraig beginners. C-mon man... All of these are excellent bourbons though! Most (except ECBP) are in my cabinet and enjoyed on a regular basis. Great Video guys!
Thanks Todd. More ECBP has recently showed up in our area. I've seen it in several stores recently.
I'm on the hunt!
26:44 What The? Scott is thinking what did that mean!?! :-)
I was thinking "where is he going with this? Scotch follows Scottish rules?"
bourbon has to use charred oak barrels only. a bourbon cant finish or 'mellow' in honey maple and still call itself a bourbon.
true, they have to use the "bourbon finished in ____________"
Bart went off the deep end again and apparently hit his head!
Great points Jeff. Scott
Buy the Mrs. a Tenuta Ulisse Amaranta Italian red wine, @BART!
well, I'm sure ye've had it.
Deep and rich. Not cheap-o but affordable. #winepointers #wine
will have to look for it.
The Regular Jack Daniels, Evan Williams and Old Forrester are all excellent for beginners. No way Black Bart!
haha thanks Dan! Scott
I've had many a newcomer see my collection and I've walked them right up my ladder list...winner winner chicken dinner.
Drinking bourbon with you guys would be fun. TEST IIITTTTTT!!!!!
absolutely! Thanks tallesta!
I must have thought Sheboygan 9 times through this video ( Velvet Elvis ) to keep someone on track........
Boom...Bart's always thinking Poughkeepsie...but only 7
Darn it Bart, just because you like a bourbon does not mean it should be recommended for beginners.
Thanks Troy! Scott agrees!
I've seen many a new drinker turned off by cheap Scotch or Bourbon never to return. I think you show them the magic right from the get go. Bart
My 5 would include, Woodford Reserve, Elijah Craig, Larceny, Evan Williams 1783, and Eagle Rare.
Rare breed was my wow bourbon
thats a good one!
No BP whisky for beginners. LOL
scott agrees! Thanks eric!
Jack daniels
we like JD.
Thanks ArtMorte! Great point.
Bart is so tanked that his cowboy hat is on backwards.
Lol. Nope. I hear that a lot with this hat but that’s how it was shaped. I picked this one up brand new for a wedding years ago in Colorado. Bart
Bart I think you’re stealing that err boldly phrase from the Martin Luther quote to sin boldly, lol.
One things for sure...He err'd boldly on this one! Scott
i was good to go until Bart brought out the ECBP.... I have been to 20 stores in my area and not once have I come across this... ever... The beginner is not going to be able to find this. Love ya Bart but nope nope and nope... maybe I am just jealous... hmm...
thank you Lockguy! Scott
uh..Scott looked liked he was trying to hide behind his hand when Bart pulled out EC BP ;) you guys slept on a few good ones from other distillers though!
Thanks Sorachi, theres a lot of good ones out there for sure!
Jdbp not a beginner bourbon
Scott agrees
JD Double Barrel lol Not for beginners! and it is Not a bourbon! Come on Bart! haha
AND ECBP lolol oh man
thank you Claire. Scott
👍 scott
Bold moves are often dumbass moves. E. G. "Here, hold my Beer."
Tru Dat
You guys are great, but Bart keeps saying transverse; I think he means inverse.😎
Jack
I like it when Bart gets corrected. Scott
You guys are great, yeah Bart is kind of full of shit but Scott tempers him with his eyes alone. But if you want to learn about Bourbon, watch "Its Bourbon Night".
thanks for slight jab Martin!
first
LoL ...64% can't by definition be a beginner's drink. Consider this friendly fire :)
Scott is standing tall, no friendly fire taking me down!
It’s NOT Bourbon!!!,
Jd on a bourbon list ,smh.. and a barrel proof for beginners.
thank you. Scott
On 4 May 1964, the United States Congress recognized Bourbon Whiskey as a “distinctive product of the United States.” The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits (27 CFR 5) state that bourbon must meet these requirements:
Bourbon must be made of a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn.
Bart, I love you man and I'm sorry, but if it takes you like 10 minutes to explain how to drink it, it's not for beginners. :)
scott agrees.
Who cares what these yokels think? I would avoid anything they recommend.
Yokel? Who you calling a yokel?
Bart's more of a folkel
@@ScotchTestDummies Wearing hats indoors … sigh.
