The TurboGrafx16 got a raw deal, I bought mine a month after launch and loved it. Still gaming on it. IMO TurboGrafx16 >>> NES

Sure?, I don't like Nes so much, but are you sure?

I mean, sure, but it wasn't in competition with the NES as it was a 16bit and came out a generation later. It's like saying PS2 is better than PS1. I'd kinda hope it is!

Well the turbo grafx 16 /pc engine was competing with the nes not snes. So yes the turbo grafx 16 /pc engine was better. Even when the snes and genesis came out the system still held its own regardless. It was the 1st system to have a cd add on. I still play my duo still. Turbografx /pce rocks!

@@crazyoldschool6342 I still think regardless of the graphics, the Nes catalog is superior.

@@GryphonICDNot true, it came out like a year after the NES.

I do not believe the TG-16 was ahead of its time. The PC Engine, perhaps, but the TG-16 was 2 years too late. Had NEC/Hudson released the TG-16 in 1987/1988 it might have gotten a foothold in the American market... maybe. They still needed to contend with Nintendo's illegal, predatory licensing scheme of which they had no answer for. Further, selling the console piecemeal while claiming it was a 16-bit machine was not the way to go about it at all.
Addendum- I remember seeing the Sega Genesis and TG-16 announced in gaming mags. I wanted both so badly I could taste them. My mother basically had me pick one for my big Christmas gift of 1989, but which one did I go for? I flip-flopped incessantly over the decision. One week, I was all about the TG-16, and then the next, I was all Sega. Fate finally decided for me when a friend got his Genesis early with Ghouls n' Ghosts. I had never seen anything like it before and I had to have it. That Christmas, I got my Genesis w/ Altered Beast, Space Harrier II, and Phantasy Star II when my parents could find it.

It was ahead of it's time the graphics are stunning for a console released only 2 years after the Sega Master System.

Keith Courage was a favorite- played for hours and hours - graphics were great, 16 bits for 2d scroller - wow at time. 😁

A third of the Turbo Grafx 16 library are space shooters. I picked up Valis 1-4, Legendary Axe 1 and 2, and Keith Courage. There's a serious lack of quality rpg's, platformers and beat em ups.🙉

No Blazing Lazers? I honestly think is not only the beat shooter in the system but perhaps it’s best game

It's all a matter of personal opinion but I don't know how China Warrior gets a top 25 mention for the PC Engine especially when you are including CD games; game only initially grabbed attention due to the large and detailed character sprites but the game-play and level design didn't measure up to that. I kind of dismissed this list as soon as that game was showcased.

Too bad the TurboGrafx16 didn't get some of the games the Sega Genesis had. Tecmo games, Sunsoft games, Tengen games and Marvel games.

The problem with turbo grafx 16 was:
    1. They only had 2-button controllers, showing it was designed to rival the NES and Master System and not something more advanced and inventive.
    2. The games were primarily designed for the Asian market. Anime-based games that were far from popular in North America and Europe at the time. They were either about Japan or China. It was either Kung Fu or Anime or Ninjas. That was about half the games, which got boring quickly. Adventure games and RPGs, as well as sports games and multi-player games, were absent from the system.
    3. The games were very vivid in color for a lot of the series. Some were overwhelming too strong or intense. They also had the same repetitive game designs that were reused over and over.
    4. WAY too many shooters. The Atari, Sega Master System and Genesis, and NES , ll flooded the market with shooters, but TurboGrafx 16 really flooded the market like Atari.
    5. There are way too many single-player games. They didn't really make any multi-player games until the system's end of life, compared to its competitors.
    6. It was difficult to find a system if you didn't live in or near a big city. Many NES games sold more units than NEC sold systems. It was so difficult to get a TurboGrafx 16 if you lived in a small city or town. Compared to NES or Sega.
    7. It was too focused on the Japanese market as opposed to being a cosmopolitan system, which is what Nintendo and Sega understood. Being in-house meant that the designers and creators were limited by their own ideas.

There were 6 button controllers available for it too.
You forgot to mention the biggest crime against humanity: the western covers. They got the 5 year old kid who designed the NES Megaman american cover to remake all of them, when the originals were the best covers in the whole history of video games.
And they had to change the slick Japanese console design to a giant turd. I don't know what they were smoking tbh.
The western release was very half-assed. It probably would have been better received just as it was in Japan, without changing anything but the language. Yeah it wouldn't have been a household name like Sega, but at least it could have found its niche among shooter fans and import games fans.

This is not even close to the most stunning games on the TG-16. Street Fighter 2 is better than half of these. Castlevania Rondo of Blood is also better than most of these. Also, the most technically impressive game on the system is missing as well. Sapphire or (Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire).
