Making a custom dimple pick. Part one - Just the tip

  • Inspired by entering @terrybpickin9941 pick design competition I got back to making some dimple picks. I raised the question some time ago that while many people seemed to make custom pin tumbler picks there didn't seem many people making custom dimple picks with nice wooden handles so decided to have a go and bought myself a mini lathe and some files. since then I have started these TH-cam videos so thought I would document the process that I have learned while teaching myself wood turning and metal work.

    Brilliant work.
    I too loved metalwork and woodwork at school in the 1970's. Made a scroll coffee table in metalwork and a chessboard square table in woodwork. Still going strong in 2024. Wow 50 years of use. Congratulations on your masterpiece ❤

      Thanks for that, I actually failed both metal and woodwork at school, it's just goes to show that if it's something that interests you enough that you can actually get better, only took me 40 years to find this out. Thanks for watching

    Nice picks there!
    I my self, kind of like to modify those huge Chinese picks to fit smaller keyways and have the ability to set the pins that hide between the wardings. Also the shaft needs to be rounded down and made smooth so it can travel more smoothly in the keyway from pin to pin. I do all this while trying to pick a lock, so this way at least I can open one lock with said flag.
    I just basically keep modifying the flag until I can pick the lock with it. 😂

      You will need to thin them down, I take most of the top and then oval it afterwards, it takes a long time. I do have some 1mm I am going to experiment with soon. Best of luck with making. What will you do for a handle?

      @@NIGBEE-lock-bothering not yet, i got the injector pins and some tools on the way. I guess getting the flags done will only take time. I have a high powered dremel tool and cutting discs as well as polish barrels, carbide burr/rotary cutter heads and drill bits, but my planning stops at the point where I need to create a stable handle for the (hopefully soon to be) flag pick. I need to think about a couple of ways to secure the resulting flag in a handle

    I admire your patience to use files, but OMG you are working way too hard. Start with 1.4mm and 1.3mm ejector pins with 6mm heads, wire 100mm long. Use a bench grinder for making the most of the flag. Rotate the pin between your fingers to produce the flag width to 0.100". Quench every two seconds in water. Shape the final flag thickness with a cut-off disc and Dremel tool. Shape the square sides round with the cut-off disc as well. 1.5mm is way too thick.

    • @NIGBEE-lock-bothering
      @NIGBEE-lock-bothering  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, yes the 1.5mm is too thick and produces the hardest part of me making the flag, thinning it down to an oval. I have not found anything in-between 1.0 and 1.5 for ejector pins, I have bought some 1.0 to have an experiment with but they feel really flexible in the pack (not had chance to try them yet) because of my fixing method for the handle the 1.5 becomes an advantage.
