Beginner's Guide: th-cam.com/video/i9P248pkgYI/w-d-xo.html HEADS UP: De Jure claims are locked behind a technology at the 867 level, I forgot to mention this! Thank you all so much for watching! In my excitement to record the video, I totally forgot to cover prisoners, ransoming, and other bits of war. Would you guys prefer this in its own video on War itself? Or is it easy enough to understand within the game? I figure most of you have already gotten that part, but the actual combat itself can be very convoluted so I wanted to peel back the layers on it. If you haven't picked up the game, you can grab it through my link here: www.nexus.gg/italianspartacus . This helps me out a TON as it gives a direct commission to the channel, and depending on what time you see this, a discount to you as well.
I think it would be good to cover as part of the war video. Little quirks like how a ruler gets released if you capture them after enforcing your demands are good to break down. Sometimes it's better to ransom BEFORE enforcing because you have 100% score from occupied territory and battles (for example, you might capture the ruler from a siege on the capital). This would be a good point to ransom the ruler, get 50-100 gold, then immediately enforce demands when they accept and get another payment and your war target. Another thing to cover would be waiting to ransom a prisoner if it says "cannot afford full X gold" and they are a ruler's relative (e.g. the box in the top right where you see the person paying the ransom is different than the person in prison). The ruler in this case will increase their income and eventually pay the full ransom if you wait, rather than short-changing yourself. One more thing might be executing a ruler of the opposing side during a war, which basically ends the war and invalidates their resistance and gives you the war target (sometimes this is preferable over enforcing demands or ransoming for gold). For example, as Malcom in Scotland you may end up fighting your brother/rival, and executing him might be worth the penalty to get rid of his claims. Dealing with an opinion penalty and possibly 1-2 factions that are unhappy might be way easier to handle than him plotting against you (with high intrigue), and constantly having a claim to your titles. If you can get rid of him before he has an heir, or get rid of his heir before pressing claims it also cuts back on the amount of nonsense you have to deal with from his side of the family.
@@rwpage89 I had 100% in a war, had the leader captured, and ransomed them for 100 gold. The war percentage then went down to 48% and I didn't have enough soldiers to complete the fight!?
@@p0tatob0ys You have to check what your sources of war score are before ransoming -- capturing the ruler of the opposing side automatically gives 100% itself. However, occupying the war target, winning a couple battles, and occupying some/all of the opposing side's territory can add up to 100% between the 3 as well. So in some cases you might have 200% war score. An easy example might be in Ireland with all the separate counties. You go to war with a Count (Earl?), and you siege down his 1 owned county, which is also the war target. After the siege, you capture the ruler. In this case you would already have 100% score from occupying ALL of their land (1 county), AND the war target. The additional 100% comes from capturing the ruler. You could then ransom him, get paid, and would still have 100% -- you could then enforce demands and get paid again, get prestige, get your territory, etc.
Great point. I had a lot more covered but I decided I'd remove it and put it in its own video because the video was an hour long and it felt TOO heavy for what was effectively two primary subjects I wanted to cover
ItalianSpartacus my bad I think I misunderstood the question. I think prisoners could be their own video - with the examples above, then also the other topics like imprisoning for crimes within your realm (or against your faith), using a hook to unlawfully imprison, using an unlawful imprison to incite a rebellion and take titles, etc. Honestly I think “enforcing demands and capturing rulers” could be its own video too.. I think to some people it’s confusing that you can siege down an entire country to only receive 1 county - maybe that would go along with different CB’s and stuff like that. Lol so much stuff to cover with this game, I love the endless depth (even if it makes the learning curve a bit rough)
@@Curratum Stockholm Syndrome is gamin for us. We know Paradox abuses us, but they give us 50% off after 2 years and occasional free DLC. It maybe worthless, but it's a gesture from the our Swedish overlords. You see, I don't go out much, girls reject me and my body is a disgrace. Paradox is all I have. It maybe Stockholm Syndrome but its a life I can't find outside. Allow me to escape through Paradox, without your judgement.
The best way I recommend to just understand everything is play the game a few hours (after doing the tutorial) and figuring it out yourself, set everything on easy it’s just to find out, then whatever you don’t understand just find a guide and cuz you already have experience with the game it won’t go in one ear and out the other
@@italianspartacus Hey I also really enjoyed the guide as well I was like @louis doat this is also my first crusader kings game,. I started out as daura and through succession and some clumsy wars I just founded the kingdom of Haussaland! I was hoping you could go a bit in depth about supplies and attrition. I've noticed it takes my army longer to gather in some areas than others and do my armies get reinforcements only in my territories or any place I occupy?
Hey my dude! did the part in this video about supplies/attrition help any? i do go over it in this video and outside of that ,there's not much more to go over. if anything confused you, happy to help out :) They get reinforcements anywhere!
Story of my life at CK 3!!! My wifes ALWAYS got pregnant while I´m off fighting wars. I made peace with the fact always thinking I´m taking then with me. Ignorance is bliss! lol
I absolutely needed this combat guide so badly. Pretty much every other strategy game has taught me that bigger numbers = win. I'm a touch intimidated by how deep the combat systems go but knowing how it works is going to make warfare much easier for my heir
Yeah its a lot more tedious than it let's on. It definitely feels like strictly a numbers game when you start, but as you get into it.. Woof.. It's dense hahaha
Would love a guide on how to properly raise and educate offspring. I'm particularly confused about the ward/guardian system and how that match affects the base stat growth of the child.
Absolutely! So "education" traits have a higher chance of being passed down with higher learning, and the skills the guardian has can be passed down. There's also a CHANCE that the ward will inherit the culture of the guardian, even if you chose not to
Yeah, I feel like this aspect has changed a lot too but I haven't bothered much with trying to educate my children properly yet, haha. I am too overwhelmed with everything else. I do know one thing though, there's a really cool dynasty legacy line called Blood that makes getting good inheritable ("congenital") traits for children and avoiding bad ones a lot easier.
@@scully4life I'm completely new to CK and these videos are the only thing keeping me afloat. I had a pretty good run going but everything fell apart when transitioning to the next generation. I don't think a single one of my heir's stats were above 10.
@@linsinbigler Oh I hear you. I have hundreds of hours in ck2 but for ck3, I binged this game over the holiday weekend and since the tutorial for Ireland is the easiest start to learn with (people even called in "tutorial island" in ck2) I just stuck with Ireland after the tutorial, and I had to restart several times due to making mistakes because I didn't know about some mechanics and had to learn the hard way. I save regularly and just pick a save point to reload from. I don't really consider it save scumming if you are learning, and I usually have to go back quite far after a major mistake, like to a previous ruler, and it's pretty punishing losing all that progress and having to do it again.
ItalianSpartacus Interestingly, in CK3, the Guardian’s Learning stat/attribute actually plays a role in getting the Ward a good education skill. Even if the Guardian has 4-star skill, but 0 learn, it’s likely the Ward will get 2-star skill
Thank you so much for this in-depth explanation of combat and claims in CK3 - this actually helped me to understand the systems much better and also use things like forests and mountains to my advantage!
Great videos, thanks for sharing this! Quick nitpick from a former (and reformed) Latinist: "de jure" is Latin, meaning roughly "by law" and is pronounced roughly "day you-ray".
Man, I'm loving your videos. I really appreciate the work that goes into it. Just so you know, the "traditional" western way of pronouncing casus belli is 'case us bell eye'. That's probably pretty far off from the original Latin, at least as far as the vowels go, but there's not much debate about the consonants. There wouldn't be a 'sh' sound unless there was a c, cs, or j in there, so you can be pretty confident about using regular old S sounds in casus. Don't quit making these videos! You're the best on TH-cam for CK3! Love it!
Thanks so much for watching man! :) I always struggle with how to say latin in my videos. I took many years of it, so I learned Classic, Church, and a more modernized version of Latin and I sometimes have a hard time deciding which to say, so I'll flip flop through pronunciation at whim throughout the video. I'm sorry if that came off as annoying!!
Man, I just want to thank you so much for these videos. Especially going over the minutiae in the menus. It does help my deeper understanding of the game loads. I'd love maybe a wee tutorial on factions and how to deal (disband) them effeciently. They are defintley not working the same as CK2 and i'm finding I'm constantly putting out fires with regard to these instead of actively pursing goals. Its getting me frustrated. lol
Same! I think the new control mechanic helps with that (for the peasant factions) and having dread really helps with keeping vassals from joining factions. The middle tree of the military lifestyle is almost a requirement if you are expanding a lot. Also, if I have a ton of kids, after getting alliances, I like to marry the spares to my vassals kids. That way they won't be able to join factions. I also like to make my wife a vassal. Even with male only succession the game will let you give the queen titles. With a high stewardship wife (my favorite), I can give her a ton of titles and she will love me always and control like half my kingdom haha. Plus, she has the same heir as the king so on succession you get those titles back to give out to people you like (cowards make the best vassals for avoiding factions) or just do the same thing with the next queen.
After 50 hours or so on the game I just watched the warfare part. And had a couple eye openers. I can retreat in an orderly fashion from an unfavorable battle? I can assault a breach to make sieges go faster? I can check which prisoners I can safely sell off? Dayyuummm!! Thanks man, that helped a lot!
Thanks for the video, very informative! Could you do a video on how to put together an effective military? Which men at arms regiments are the best? Do you want more regiments or bigger regiments? Are mercenaries worth it? What's the best way to get high quality knights? So and so forth.
Another very helpful video, thank you for making these!! I just have a couple things to add/clarify that were different in my games (maybe it's a settings thing, I'm not really sure at this point). I noticed that marrying relatives off can be super dangerous because of their claims. It's a bit of a catch-22 because you want to get our dynasty on foreign thrones but at the same time, they will use their power or their new liege's power against you to press their claims. For example, I married a daughter into the family of the English ruling dynasty (de Normandie) in my first Ireland play-through. Then, a couple generations down the line, my ruler has a relative as a vassal to England who has claims on ALL of my titles and England was MUCH more powerful than me and they stomped me into oblivion. So the next time around I enacted male only succession as soon as I could (which sucked because I'm a woman so I like to play as women) so that daughters can't inherit claims, but that doesn't seem to be working correctly. They can't inherit titles but they are still inheriting claims. However, the realm I marry them into won't be able to press those claims on my male-only titles unless somehow a woman gets them, which theoretically shouldn't be possible because not only can they not inherit but also I can't grant titles to women now. But the game says that women can't inherit claims under male-only and they still do. They just can't be pressed... but if they can pass those claims to a son I could be still screwed... It's all a bit confusing for me because so much has changed from ck2, which I have hundreds of hours in. I can't imagine how confusing it is to completely new players. The other thing that is different in my games is that characters lose their unpressed claims if they lose the war. They only get the pressed claims if the war ends in white peace.
Excellent video only been playing for about 10 hours and have been waiting for a video like this to show all the ins and outs of the combat screens really helpful mate cheers.
Bro the combat phase breakdown you did here is fantastic. I have played HOI4 (300 hrs), EU4 (700 hrs), Imperator: Rome (50 hrs), and Stellaris (40 hours), and I still learn new stuff about combat from Paradox games. The pursuit portion is something I had NO clue about and wondered why my armies, despite being "elite" and way outnumbering the enemy, were not actually killing more of the enemy soldiers. It was like playing ping pong where I would slap them and they would just shatter and come back with basically the same size. Turns out I didn't have good pursuit (basically just using skirmishers and levies). Thanks for this, great work!
Yeah man, it's such a huge portion and it really can cause a huge issue for you because they'll be able to come back at you with almost the exact same numbers and whittle you down over time. Men-at-arms are SO important as you progress beyond the earliest stages of the game. Once they start making units to "screen" it's a whole different ball game! glad i could help man :)
@ItalianSpartacus I would love to see a guide on vassal management. As you expand from county to dutchy -> kingdom->empire what are the various strategies on managing your vassals and titles so that vassals stay happy and do not become too powerful to oppose you. Once i hit kingdom level i seem to hit a brick wall and find it difficult to expand further.
You want to have as few vassals as possible. If you're a king you don't want barons or counts (except in counties or duchies in your demesne). You want the vassals to be more or less organized around the de jure lines for the duchies and kingdoms if you're emperor. Rulers will want their de jure vassals assigned to them. That's usually the best way to keep vassals relatively happy.
Thank you!! It's my first time playing and I got stuck on the tutorial! It was forcing me into war but I didn't understand how to win after depleting the enemies health lol I had no idea what to actually do during the seige 😂😂😂😂 I plan to practice more today!!
i tried this game yesterday and i mad emy own character and started as a chief in a province in Norway bcs i really wanted to try that. i dint go through the tutorial either since best way to learn is to simply play it. i conquered a bunch but i never managed to create the Kingdom of Norway. but i figured out how faith and money works and how to sorta increase it. and such. thanks for helping others enjoy crusader kings 3. I'm pretty sure many people are new to crusader kings right now bcs of the third game.
Great stuff in all your videos. Watched a bunch bcs I just started the game. Great content and well explained. You seem passionate by the period. Keep up the work!
Thanks so much on the vid! As a newcomer watching your videos, it helped me tremendously and I'm now a fan! One specific problem I keep running into is having my heir succeed me but having all my vassals having a low opinion of him, leading to factions and etc when i just want to expand my kingdom. Were you going to ever make any vids including an explanation on how to avoid this? Thanks again for your hard work.
Great videos man! You go over everything with amazing detail and it helps as a new player of the franchise to know whats what and how to make sense of it all. I was wondering if you had the time and could make a video on what does your courts purpose serve, and marrying them with others to expand your claims/land if thats a thing? Also i was having issues managing domains and granting titles to my heirs especially when i died i didn't understand that one of my sons was no longer my vassel and was his own thing that i no longer controlled even though he was my brother. Essentially the line of succession and how to grant titles to people in order to expand your empire and stay within domain limits. If that makes sense lol. Keep up the good work dude!
I did a video on succession! That might be able to help you out with a good chunk of this.. Did you catch that one? It's linked in the Playlist at the end :) as far as courts.. I'll add that to my list! Right now I've got making money, then the renown/dynasty system.. Court's I can definitely add
I dig your channel and enjoying learning the new game. One suggestion - the battle breakdown is nice but I would also cover the after battle report. Its the green or red notification (depending on whether you won or lost) at the top of the screen. It can give you a more detailed breakdown on the results which can be helpful in figuring out better compositions, ie more light cavalry in the pursuit phase.
The opening scene of Kenneth Branagh's version of Shakespeare's "Henry V" is a great visual example of the "fabricate claim" action. It's also a great movie, especially if you are English ;)
Sparty: Let's dive on into the game and have some fun with war, combat and claims in Crusader Kings 3. Also Sparty, 1 second later: So before we actually get into war and combat... Such a blue baller, shame on you! I chose to play as Tatomir, Count of Sandomierz in Poland and has been stuck with Sandomierz, Radom and Cieszyn whole game. First we got steamrolled by Hungary, and later Polish king forbid to wage war between his vassals (need a strong hook). Now I lost Radom to my brother after Tatomir died, and I am going to lose Cieszyn to another nephew when this character dies. I hope this video helps me out.
@@DavidDiaz-ej6mw Thanks, that's a good point. Sparty even mentions it here, just from the liege's perspective. I didn't think about it from the vassal perspective, good one.
This game has got to be the hardest game I have ever played. The level of just stuff you have to pay attention to. I only had one ruler whose reign was peaceful. made a ton of money build up a ton of infrastructure. His son made the kingdom go into debt and his son was murdered by peasants for his fathers actions. So far I have had hours and hours of fun and have no idea what I am doing at all.
Thanks for the detailed terrain info, I didn't realise mountains, etc had as large an effect as they do. Does anyone know the benefit of high ruler prowess apart from random pop up events? I get that you want it for knights who actually fight, but I've not seen a situation where my ruler is actually fighting, only where he leads an army and martial is key.
Hover over each skill as your ruler, it'll give you a quick breakdown of what it does at the bottom of the tool tip under "Effects:" I can't remember off hand unfortunately! :) but that should help you
These videos are great! What's annoying me with the UI with respect to War is that it shows your army power vs someone you might Declare on based on your army and all allies. So I've had a few times where I didn't fully look at each of our individual army sizes without allies as the main screen showed my enemy was "vastly inferior" but then once I declared war, 1 ally wouldn't come, 1 would but couldn't because he was a vassal of my enemy (but still showed his army size in the UI contributing to "vastly inferior". And then the last cost so much Prestige (750) that I didn't want to do it. By that point instead of it being like my 4000 with 3 allies vs his 900, it was my 800 vs his 900. The UI definitely needs a tickbox for "include Allies" because this isn't Civ, Allies don't just auto-join every war. Also, just like Civ, if I don't bring my army to help in my allies war, I get in trouble but I can't yell at my allies if they don't come help me out? Come onnn lol
I haven't bought the game yet, but stumbled upon these awesome videos while doin a little research and....well I want ck3 even more now. Can't wait to unite Africa or begin Portugal. Yeah amazing videos
Thank you so much dude!! Hahaha you'll love it, I promise. I have a purchase link in my description if you'd like to use that. It's still on sale until January 5th!
This helped me alot. In my tutorial campaign, my heir suddenly lost a ton of income and levies because my second son suddenly held a metric shit-ton of titles. It almost halfed my armies in one succession, which made me unable to heplpout the hebrides against the danish 5K armies. I went from almost 4K to 1800 levies in one stupid event, that the tutorial did nothing to point out.
I would love to see a guide on how to manage marriages. I’m especially bad at using matralenial marriages successfully or getting my dynasty to have lands outside of my empire.
I tried hoi4 but failed misserably to understand it. Gave paradox another chance through ck3 coz i believe once a get it iz gonna be amazing and fun. And your guides are helping me so much. If this mechanics if brought over to total war (where i am a real veteran), it’s gonna be the ultimate strategy game of all time.
Some info about using another character's claim would be appreciated I dont have a specific question but when I played a few days ago there was a claimant in my court but couldnt use him. Was I supposed to invite him to my court and then try to press that claim? Also there were a few moments where I could hit the declare war button and use another character's casus belli but the confirm button was greyed out. I know I'm not super clear. I'll play again and if I run into it i'll formulate my question more clearly
You might be tempted to go after castles for loot and hostages. Ransoms go for 10 and can go as high as 500 a pop. Enforce demands happen basically immediately and the AIs might take a couple days before it reaches out to surrender.
Hey Sparty, these videos have been incredibly helpful to me as someone brand new to the series, and now I'm having more fun with a game than I honestly have in years. I have a question though-would you ever consider doing a video on expansion methods beyond just war? I've been marrying into claims, fabricating them, and using other kinds of claimants to expand my kingdom, but I always end up actually grabbing the territory just by invading and sieging. I'm in my third generation starting from Dublin on tutorial island, and I've "united" Ireland and am now invading Wales, but I feel like this ultra-aggressive method is maybe the least interesting way to play this game, even if it still is really fun. Any tips for diplomatic strategies or intrigue strategies to expand?
You've probably figured this out by now but for anyone else: 1. Inheritance, its slow but if you make lots of kids any marry them off into other dynasties their decendents can end up as the heirs to those kingdoms and eventually they might name your player heir as their heir. 2. Speed up the process, use schemes to murder those who are ahead of you in line to inherit titles. And once you are first in line you can kill the current ruler, no war needed. 3. Diplomatic expansion, if you form say the kindom of Ireland but don't have Ulster under you yet you can demand vassalization from their ruler. (Depends on opinion of you) 4. Passively, once you get big your vassals may declare their own wars on people outside your empire which expands your realm for free. (Doesn't really apply if you are just Ireland, also dependent on realm laws)
I have a question on how archbishops give you claims. I've used that function a lot in my Ireland run so far, but I've noticed sometimes I'm given the option to pay more in order to get a claim to a whole duchy (or petty kingdom in Irish terms). What causes that? Do you have to fabricate against the ducal capital, or is it random?
@Zack Reynolds ah. Okay, I'll do that. I thought that the only things that could happen with that were sometimes taking opinion hits, and that archbishop skill only affected time efficiency, but you may be right
Yup, what Jeff said - a particularly good archbishop will give you better claims - such as lower prices for the fabrication, or even a larger title. that red/green text is not generic.. it's indicative of the SKILL LEVEL of the councilor in question. So lets say you have a bishop with 20 learning, well their red/green text (if there is any red at that level) will read differently than someone with 6 learning. So always pay attention to that :)
What everyone else said, haha. High learning bishops are excellent! Also, if you want the duchy claim just keep letting the lower tier claims pass by choosing the second option (don't remember exactly what it says) and eventually you will get the duchy claim with a good bishop. With a learning skill of 15+ it would usually only take about 3 tries for me. Well worth the wait. Just be sure you have enough prestige because the duchy claim wars can cost quite a lot of prestige and if you need allies calling them costs even more on top of that.
@@scully4life yeah, if that's true it'd be way better to wait than to try and grab those bigger duchy's one county at a time lol. I didn't know waiting could change it (thought it just meant you changed your mind lol), I'll give that a try!
I'm unable to currently play on account of my laptop unable to run it efficiently, but this gives me a look on how the game works once my new laptop arrives
I figured all this out when looking at making an men in arms. But what i'm clueless about is how to find out who can ally you in which battles before starting a war though. Yes the tips on top tells you which allies in current war you can have, but how do you find out before starting said war who can support you that you're allied with? And if you simply can't then how do you see who the enemy is allied with to figure out for yourself based on their alliances?
So an ally won't join you if you go to war with their LIEGE, or another ally (typically). Select the ally's faction and look in their diplomacy section to see who they're allied with. As for their liege, you can see that to the right of the ally's head
@@italianspartacus thank you. I was hoping there was like a way to see allies on the claims part of when you are selecting reason for war but at least there's some way of seeing allies. Just wish it was easier.
i love your channel i‘m a new ck player and i‘m so glad there are channels like yours. I have a question though: after the tutorial with the murchad guy i had an unpressed claim on the kingdom of ireland BUT the kingdom of ireland is not yet created. how would you go about if you wanted to actually become king of ireland? or is it just an impossible hope?
Amazing tutorial! Subscribed! Could you please do a tutorial on gold and levies? I am having a hard time understand gaining levies and increasing army quality.
Regarding claims, I found I could also use this to my advantage against targets. I had a subterfuge heavy count in Portugal where I had no option but to murder my way through the succession line to inherit some more land, not entirely successfully as I only gained 1 county (I suspect because I was discovered in at least one plot and disinherited along the way). But turning my attention to the south, murdering the lead sultan splintered his kingdom to more manageable chunks I could take on with my fledging army (although this took years in game time sitting on one county ownership).
Jesus Christ. I was just fae rolling combat and couldn't understand why with a huge ass army, the opposing army was allowed to walk away with only like 100 soldiers lost. Never figured that the combat bar would also have Blue Help Text. Game changing.
@@adamp.2517 that and golden obligations is a good combo...but unfortunately poor people cant pay you(darn peasants) and the wealthy tend to have half decent armies
Choose the Stewardship Lifestyle. I take it almost every time and if all goes well I make 16-17 Gold a Month. With the Stewardship lifestyle you can get +10% Gold etc. Also construct buildings and upgrade them. Make sure control is 100% in every county so you get 100% of your taxes and not just 60-70%. You can increase control with your martial.
I would be curious to know if there is a way to expand without war. I understand that marriage and inheritance of titles is a way. Are there other ways?
I don't know in ck3, but in ck2, we could set up a vassal to inherit. Has long as is new title is of lower toer than in our realm, the new territory is incorporated in our realm. I presume it is the same in ck3, I have just not tested it
Was wondering why sometimes when I've sieged an area my troops end up saying standing still. There is no progression on the siege. I've tried to go and attack my enemies troops away from the siege and some of the time I do catch them and get the 100% but when I enforce the demand I don't get the county. Is that a bug or am I doing something wrong with my attacking. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Quick question - In ck2 you were able to take "extra" land/counties that you occupied during the war. Are you not able to do this anymore? IE - I took land #1 (wargoal) but I also took land #2 and #3 because I seiged it and occupied it and secured it during the peace talks.... did I explain this right? Lol who knows.
Ok so i am just wondering what is the best way to increase the quality of your armies as they get bigger, i am finding that the bigger my armies get the worse they become (quality wise) and i am not 100% sure how to make them better other than spending tons of gold on men at arms regiments.
Having more Knights and more men at arms is the biggest thing that you can do. The Knights will greatly influence that and the men at arms can have their "level" increased so that there's more soldiers in one unit! This is your best bet
I've put in I don't know how many hours since release. Several campaign attempts, all the way up to forming an empire. And I had zero idea about any of this combat stuff. I've been looking at the numbers over the head of my army vs theirs. And if I'm bigger I attack. And I wondered why sometimes I got destroyed even though I had 4x as many levy. And now I know. This was incredibly helpful. I didn't even know you could retreat mid battle... I wish you would have went into attrition and supply more, maybe tips on how to manage it?
I do wish you could add a war target for allies sort of like total warhammer 2 has. I find the ally ai most of the time kind of helps but would like to be able to focus them a bit more
Great video, cheers for the pointers. Quick question though, can you get claims for entire kingdoms and does that allow you to win the kingdom once you win the war? Or do you have to conquer one duchy at a time?
Yes! You can get claims on any level.. Tribal has the ability to do a "conquer kingdom" casus Belli.. This will enable you to take a kingdom plus ANY additional land you've capture during the war Additionally.. You have a chance to fabricate a claim above the one you're targeting. So it you're looking to forge a duchy claim.. There's a chance it'll change to claim on the entire kingdom
It seems like supplies are contingent upon what the land can afford you, this game is so intricate but didn’t take supply lines into account? I mean armies, once establishing a spearhead into foreign land should be able to establish supply lines and not have to survive off of the nearby land. Is there a supply line bonus if a port is controlled or joining friendly territories?
Quick Question(literally near start of video) if you create claims on Duchys, are you able to have a greater claim upon the unclaimed duchys of the full kingdom?
If I bring a combination of men-at-arms with skirmishers, archers, pikemen and horsemen, and my enemy does the same. How does their countering work? Great video and I hope you'll continue cover some of the combat details
Each men at arms. Will counter each other.. So they'll get percentage buffs to their damage AND debuffs to toughness depending on the units. You're most welcome!
Forewarning, this is just my best interpretation of the available information, and I haven't done any testing myself. Each unit only cares if they themself are being countered, and by how much; it doesn't matter if that unit is also countering other enemy units. If there are 2x or more enemy countering units, your unit has their damage stat reduced by 90%. If there are less than 2x, your unit's penalty is scaled by the proportion less than 2x there are. For example, if there are equal numbers of enemy countering units, your unit will have a 45% damage penalty; if you have twice as many soldiers as there are enemy counters, your soldiers will have a 22.5% penalty. Repeat the calculation for every unit involved in the combat. So in your example, the skirmishers, archers, and horsemen on both sides are being countered by an even force and have their damage stat reduced by 45%. The pikemen are uncountered and are dealing their full damage.
@@BookofAeons wow that's some impressive insight you are able to dig up. Thanks! Does all these damage from various troop type (various men at arms, as well as normal levy) just add up to a single number for the calculation?
@@leetcoding1 I'm not certain, but if the combat mechanics are similar to past paradox games I'd expect them to be calculated on a per-soldier level. Each soldier that fits in your combat width will attack and be attacked by the nearest soldier within the enemy's combat width, and when one side runs out of soldiers to fill a full combat width they start getting flanked.
@@BookofAeons Then they'll have to calculate health for each soldier. This is could be its own game if actually implemented this way. Not even Total War calculate per individual soldier. I'll be surprised (in a positive way) if that's how they do it
So if I understand this correctly when you order lasagna à la carte with amuse-bouche followed by soup du jour before the fin de siècle your je ne sais quoi nullifies all your legions joie de vivre thereby preventing a hostile ménage à trois from the nouveau riche. Beginner's Guide: th-cam.com/video/i9P248pkgYI/w-d-xo.html
HEADS UP: De Jure claims are locked behind a technology at the 867 level, I forgot to mention this!
This game is so complicated, but so fun! over 30 hours and I still have no idea what I'm doing! These guides have been uber helpful!
Bro Ive got about 200 hours and im only just able to complete a play through on Iron man mode
Playing a game for 30 hours and still having no idea what you're doing is called "playing a terrible game with Stockholm syndrome".
@curratum depends on how you define “game” ;)
@@Curratum Stockholm Syndrome is gamin for us. We know Paradox abuses us, but they give us 50% off after 2 years and occasional free DLC. The best way I recommend to just understand everything is play the game a few hours (after doing the tutorial) and figuring it out yourself, set everything on easy it’s just to find out, then whatever you don’t understand just find a guide and cuz you already have experience with the game it won’t go in one ear and out the other
thanks so much man. this is my first crusader kings and you're really helping me enjoy the game. thanks for all the guides :p
glad to hear it brother! it's such a tedious game, but once you get around it, it's SO amazing

Hey my dude! did the part in this video about supplies/attrition help any? i do go over it in this video and outside of that ,there's not much more to go over. if anything confused you, happy to help out :) They get reinforcements anywhere!

love you tho

Wow what a positive gaming experience comment I found.
This is my first CK game, and your guides have been fantastic. I really appreciate all the work you’re putting into these tutorials!
Thank you so much man! I have one for money coming up once I really drill down on the mechanic myself :)
Ÿour videos should be included in the game as official tutorials. They have helped me a lot. Thanks bunches!
Hahaha God I'd love that. Thank you so much for watching brother
Wait, are we not going to talk about how his wife got pregnant while he was off fighting a battle?
Are old story for soldiers. Hehe
Story of my life at CK 3!!! My wifes ALWAYS got pregnant while I´m off fighting wars. I made peace with the fact always thinking I´m taking then with me. Ignorance is bliss! lol
That is one of my top questions and laugh a little when it happens...frequently.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
We don't talk about such things
Man the details in this game are mindblowing. Thanks for the guide!
Absolutely friend! happy to help :)
Great videos, thanks for sharing this!
Quick nitpick from a former (and reformed) Latinist: "de jure" is Latin, meaning roughly "by law" and is pronounced roughly "day you-ray".
I love knowing the proper pronunciation, you have saved myself from losing my mind on wondering if I pronounce Latin correctly
MVP of the year, I needed this video. Thank you so much!
My pleasure my dude! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for these tutorials I love grand strategy games but this one by far has the biggest learning curve.
Glad you enjoy it! I also struggle so don't worry, we're learning alongside each other at the same time! :)
That has been an amazingly helpful demonstration of just how detailed the war aspects are - I had not realised at all how rich this was.
Absolutely dude! Happy to help :)
Again, love your videos. Well structured, well detailed, well spoken, couldn't ask for more. Thank you
And thank you for watching my dude! :)
Game just keeps getting better thanks to these kinds of great videos!!!
Thank you so much I have around 25 hours and still couldnt understand everything about claims. You really explained them super clearly good job !
Thanks for the guide and great video, greetings from Malta.
Woud be so cool to have all this diplomacy combined with some decent combat like in the first total war games.
And Anno gameplay instead of clicking on upgrading and building in baronies
Never Back Down IS a great movie!
You are a godsent 😭 extremely helpful!
So helpful to a newer player, thanks so much!!
I learned how to play stellaris and by god I’ll finally learn this
@ItalianSpartacus I would love to see a guide on vassal management.
Brilliant video and guide. Look forward to more.
Your guide certainly helped me get around better in this game! Thank you very much, you got yourself a new subscriber :)
Thanks so. Much for watching brother :)
Dude, you're very good at this.
This really helped. Hopefully I will be a little more successful in my kingdom hence forth!
Just watch out for anyone on the grassy knoll. THanks so much for watching brother :) Glad I could help
🎉 awesome, thanks!

If possible you can modify your vassal contract to warfare sanctioned and you wont need the hooks on your liege

:) but that should help you
You do an amazing job explaining. Ty
thanks for this . . . . a great vid and explanation of combat. Very helpful Cheers!
Thanks bro, great videos!
The best way to understand De Jure claims is to think of it like a pyramid: County
I’m really new to this game and I’m finding it very complicated as the game mechanics aren’t super intuitive but your explanations are brilliant
Yes! Exactly! Invite him to your court and then you get the claim since you can use his claim as a Cassus Belli :)
You might be tempted to go after castles for loot and hostages. Ransoms go for 10 and can go as high as 500 a pop. Enforce demands happen basically immediately and the AIs might take a couple days before it reaches out to surrender.

oh dude i even have a note to cover that. your'e totally correct! sorry man
Hey Sparty, these videos have been incredibly helpful to me as someone brand new to the series, and now I'm having more fun with a game than I honestly have in years.
You've probably figured this out by now but for anyone else:
(Depends on opinion of you)
4. Passively, once you get big your vassals may declare their own wars on people outside your empire which expands your realm for free. (Doesn't really apply if you are just Ireland, also dependent on realm laws)
Youre the best man!
@@jeffreypeters2803 Absolutely, I thought that at first also but I saw someone do it on a YT video and tried it myself and it worked like a charm.
That's next!
Honestly I'd recommend starting off as Asatru or changing your faith to include either the Warmonger or Pursuit of Power tenets
I was hoping you would go into detail on the land limit and if/how your able to raise it and what's the penalties for going over?
26:00 Wait a minute...how did the King's wife get pregnant while the King was out commanding his troops?
Jesus Christ. I was just fae rolling combat and couldn't understand why with a huge ass army, the opposing army was allowed to walk away with only like 100 soldiers lost. Never figured that the combat bar would also have Blue Help Text. Game changing.
How to know where to go with your army when you are trying to help a Ally I can't find them on the map.
The guide that Id really like is an idea of how to make money; I can't help but feel like Im missing something on how to do that efficiently.
That's next :)
@@italianspartacus Great!
I join every war I can and continuously seige castles. Ransom every person I can for gold.
Thanks
Thanks for this.:) Man is that combat system convoluted though.
You must be new to Paradox strategy games. Trust me this is the most understandable one.
@@solodatemaru I agree that this is the most accessible Paradox strategy. I still find the combat needlessly complex and unengaging.
Bruh, thank you for this video. I couldn't find anything to explain this claim BS.
My pleasure brohan of rohan
I need to learn more about troops and how they work.
This will enable you to take a kingdom plus ANY additional land you've capture during the war
Additionally.. You have a chance to fabricate a claim above the one you're targeting. So it you're looking to forge a duchy claim.. There's a chance it'll change to claim on the entire kingdom
-sets up an amazing setup for my dynasty
*they instantly kill each other so that other nations can come in and take what i legit just took*
HUGE BRAIN
I'll be surprised (in a positive way) if that's how they do it
When combat width limits your armie's "frontline", how does the game decide which units are at the "frontline"? Levies/men-at-arms/knights?
So if I understand this correctly when you order lasagna à la carte with amuse-bouche followed by soup du jour before the fin de siècle your je ne sais quoi nullifies all your legions joie de vivre thereby preventing a hostile ménage à trois from the nouveau riche. Any raison d'être therefore becomes
fait accompli and your enemies suffer déjà vu.
HAHAHAHAHAHAH
What about prowess and army quality ?
