    40:57 Most important thing is that you fixed it carefully and prudently. Regardless of experience and skill, I consider this work a continuous learning process.
    I actually use the power injection method when necessary, but if I could use freeze spray and/or alcohol methods, then I will.

    That bracket at 4:40 usually doesn't really need both screws removed. I only ever remove the screw that attaches to the housing, and keep the other one attached to the board

    • @ststele
      @ststele  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ray I worry about bending it when I tape the board to the table or by getting it caught on something. I get a lot of boards shipped here with it left on and never had an issue with it though.

    You have could find the short in less time if you used the freez spray , it's like magic , I would recommend you to remove the VCC main it self first then connect a small wire with any of the VCC main components then connect voltage but don't forget to spray the freez spray, short will revel it self

    Impressive work. There is also a lot other methods for diagnostic and finding shorted components. I will suggest using thermal camera for finding bad components, since you are using heat. Also you can apply some alcohol on the components so you can see if something is hot and evaporates it. :))

    Thermal camera

    • @abigguitar
      @abigguitar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, while the handheld ones are a little pricey (~US $400-$1500), if you're looking for subtle heat sources, a thermal camera is the best option. If you get the right one, you might even be able to plug it into your video recording stream. Without a thermal camera, as this video shows, you're hunting in the dark.

      Current and alcohol work just as well, but not as fast. But if he drops a couple grand on a thermal camera, how long will it take to achieve ROI? How many jobs warrant a thermal camera? If every job were a short like this then it may be worth it. If you’re doing one a week or so, I would submit it’s a questionable investment. It certainly is a “nice to have,” though.

  • @bkj242

    I had the same issue on an iPad mini, the issue was the CPU but it never heated to a "hot to touch" point. Removing it however cleared the short.

    3A at 0.06V is just 0.18W. It will not get warm. You've to watch the voltage on your power supply too, not only the current.

    Considering your fancy gear, I'm surprised you don't have some sort of thermal imaging optics. Dead shorts often don't have much of a heat signature (since R=0) and therefore are hard to find by fingering the board.

    Hi, noob question. at the very beginning you are touching positive and negative pads on the battery connector? Aren't two pads "two parallel lines" are plus and minus?

  • @bkj242
    @bkj242 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's possible for a cap to be shorted via punch through, at rated voltages but not show a short at much lower voltage. Best to makes these PS probes at no less than VCC_MAIN.

    Hey I was wondering if maybe when u are checking for a short and feeling for heat with ur hand, if maybe u could use a laser temp detector and it would show those slight changes when u connect ur power supply and have a short. Just a thought I wanted to run by ya. If u don't think u could apply that to this type of work just disregard this comment.

    Hey Jason.. I have a technical question.. I have an iphone 6s that turns on but won't charge.. the phone had a broken screen, I don't have much history on the phone as i just bought it to repair the screen but charging was not working before screen replacement anyhow, so i changed the battery and i am able to turn him on both via power button and lightening cable.. I changed the charging dock also but it won't charge..do you have any idea what could that be? I don't want to jump into replacing tristar or tigiris.. what do you think it could be..
    Since the phone is turning on using the lightening cable so i believe the charging dock is sensing something or at least it is well connected..please help me and sorry for the long message

    Hi Jason! What happen if only take that shorted vvcmain cap from the board and not replacing it and trying to turn the iPhone on? Does it turning on at all? I'm asking because I removed shorted vvcmain cap (C3220_RF) from iPhone 6 board which released the vccmain short. That was my first vccmain short hunting and I found that short on second cap, yayy! That was absolutely some kind of luck :D

    Ist always so funny and hilarious,
    But whats is real important then your handy microscope ?
    What are you breathing in? Heat up the bord , there is flux on the bord ans some flux and lead solder, tin residue
    The all show a lot of equipment and and handy tools spend lot of money on
    YOUR 2 LONGS, LONGS THAT YOU CANT REPLACE
    SO BAY a AIR SUCKER OR MAKE IT YOUR SELF
    Make a simple sucker that you be sure that that smoke and flux residue will suck away from you !!
