  • Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku' is a renowned Japanese maple known for its striking winter interest due to its bright red bark, which gives it the name "coral bark Japanese maple." In spring, it emerges with lush chartreuse green foliage that matures to a vibrant kelly green. During fall, the leaves turn brilliant yellows with hints of red and orange, adding seasonal color. It typically grows into a large upright tree, reaching 15 to 20 feet tall over 15 to 20 years, with about a foot of growth annually. 'Sango Kaku' thrives when planted in a location that allows its winter bark to shine, such as against darker backgrounds or near conifers, enhancing garden aesthetics during winter months. It pairs well with other Japanese maples, especially those with red and orange fall foliage, creating a striking contrast. This variety is highly valued for its year-round visual appeal, making it a favorite among gardeners seeking both seasonal and structural interest.

    Oh I love Sango Kaku and all those coral barks for their cheerful bright color in winter when so much else is grey and brown.

    My favorite so far is Sango Kaku. When I got it, it was like a stick. But wow, in 2 years, it has tripled in size and I love the summer leaves and cannot wait to see the coral bark in winter. With icicles, it will look amazing.

    My favorite thing about sango kaku is how vigorous it is. It can grow like bamboo or like a dense shrub

    I have two SK JMs, both contained within large terracotta pots. The first one purchased during the start of Autumn exhibited surreal almost neon pink fall colours. It’s never repeated that Autumn Colour since, instead a pale yellow~orange tone instead. But the bright Red, almost like Dogwood, stems are interesting. Oh and it’s a vigorous grower with lots of spindly growth. Recommended!

    My favorite winter interest japanese maple has got to be the Sanko Kaku. And wow, im literally pairing it with a Fireglow ! I got the Coralbark last year and thought it was so kool when Matt said it makes a great pairing with Fireglow. I jumped in my seat !!! I agree !!! & What are the odds! Great advice. I just bought a small Coral Bark tree from our local garden shop. It only stands 3 ft tall, with the pot. I live in south eastern NC, where it is quite windy most of the time. I was hoping your video would give more information on how to plant and stake this tiny tree to keep it from getting damaged by our windy climate. Thank you.

    I was wondering if this tree would do good with showing it red in the winter if it has full morning sun only in the winter? I have a tree close to where I want to plant it but it wouldn't get much morning sun in the spring or fall.

    I am in Austin, and as my house was built in 2014, there is not much shade. There is also not much wind protection, other than a fence. Will I need to keep the tree covered every summer, or at some point, will it be able to stand full sun?

    I just stole a Sango Kaku at my nursery because it's winter and no leaves are out, so no interest from the crowd. I bought a VIGOROUS tree that is 7' - great trunk, wild ramification for only 139.00 in DFW Tx. I also bought the ONLY Fireglow there and I look for them every year but almost never find them. So HAPPY!!! I normally make these into Bonsai, but this is too beautiful and I just can't cut these trees!!!

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don’t do well as rooted cuttings. We do graft them to acer palmatum seedlings for the best root systems

    • @RCCRAYZ
      @RCCRAYZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrMapleShow I plan on mainly grafting it, I was just curious as to how it would effect cuttings going back to the original rootstock. So the normal rootstock just wouldnt hold up to growing naturally? I'm in zone 5.

    I ordered a Fjellhiem and plan on using it in a container. Is it ok to keep this in full sun? Even in the afternoon? I have a Cornus Kousa but it's too young to really have the mottled bark in the winter.

    • @MrMapleShow
      @MrMapleShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We do not grow Fjellheim because we consider it to be an extremely week cultivar. I don’t think it’s a good grower so we just don’t produce it. Very short lived even if you do everything right honestly.
