  • Is it worth it to spend tens of thousands on a confinement centre? Why not just hire a confinement nanny?
Motherhood isn't easy, especially when you have to juggle work and being a mum. Yen Lin, who has recently become a mother (yay!), shares her experience thus far with Ian & Shuen on this episode of 'Are You For Real?'.

choosing a which option to go for is like choosing a HBD, Condo or GCB. It all depends on your financial and afforability

$30K is an exorbitant amount! Across the border in JB, you can find ones as low as $3K and high end ones for $15K. Most Malaysians working in SG would likely go to these. The difference between the lower and higher end ones are usually just like a 3 star hotel and 5 star hotel. If you don’t mind spending on a super luxurious staycay, then sure thing, but most people would be contented with the mid to low end centres. It’s like choosing a luxurious water chalet in the Maldives over a beautiful villa in Bali. Both can be equally as good, but to spend that kind of money, it’s definitely more of a want than need. Moreover, the mummy will be stuck (confined) in the room most of the time, so you aren’t really enjoying it as much as a five star staycay. The mum would also likely be thinking all the time about feeding the baby, the baby’s condition, breastfeeding, expressing milk and learning the ins and outs of taking care of the baby. Best to ensure that the staff are attentive & knowledgeable and food is suitable for you. I think the extra money would be better spent on upgrading your home with the necessary equipment for the baby’s needs as you’ll be using that for way longer.

Unbelievable that we are actually having this conversation. $30K just for 28 days of maternity confinement?? 🤦🏼‍♂️ Many Singaporeans with full time jobs don’t even earn that kind of money in a year. If anything, it just signifies the seriousness of the WEALTH GAP in Singaporean society. The reason why such services is so expensive was probably also the LACK OF SERIOUS COMPETITION in that new industry.

Don't blame the confinement centers for such high charges. Blame yourself not having the capability to procure the services. It's not like you can haggle with the confinement on the prices.

How is it a new thing? Confinement centre have always existed it’s not like someone just randomly invented it recently and made it an essential. Confinement centres have existed for years.
