To elaborate a bit, Associate Football came out of a desire to codify the varies "football" games that existed within the UK. At the time the term football was used for everything, including Rugby or at least what became known as Rugby. Rugby was at the table when the Football Association (FA) started. However, when the rules started getting written-up, the FA refuse to allow the "carrying of the ball with hands" and thus Rugby and any other football that allowed the "carrying of the ball" walked out. As a result, we have Association Football or Soccer being born out of the codification of a football sport by the FA (the association in association football). The name Soccer was promoted early because there were other "footballs" and the FA wanted to distinguish their football from the other footballs. However, in most countries the term "soccer" is now redundant as when you say "Football" most people in the world know you mean Association Football. But in countries where other forms of football still have a major presence, such as USA, Australia, Canada or countries where the American influence is high, people still call it Soccer. We have The English Football League with The Football League Championship and The Football League Cup ... So No "s" word here!
