Although I don't understand the sweet Swedish language, I'll keep listening to Greta's lovely voice, the only precious gift of her, besides her movies and her photos. Thanks a lot for this phone call.

Väldigt artig, den där Broman. Men jag måste säga, att det var ganska fräckt av Herr Broman att spela in samtalet med Greta Garbo. Det var väl närmast ett förtroende-brott.

From the start (Man in black suit speaking):
This series from 1992 was made in 5 episodes and we are gonna watch a bit of episode 2. And this time it is about Greta Garbo, "the divine"
Gert Engström was picture/photograph manager at Expressen (Daily tabloid magazine in Sweden) when Greta Garbo arrived in Sweden in the summer of 1946.
0:52 What do you do as a picture manager?
I off course try to find out the possibilities of taking pictures of Garbo because this was a period where she wasn't a very public figure (timid according to Gert Engström). I quite quickly came in contact with "the fixer", Sten Hellberg at Bellmansro who called me and mentioned that Garbo will come and eat together with Max Gumpel and another person. I told Sten that you have to help us. We need to have a table beside them. And he promised we would get that. 1:35 And, you will place Garbo alone on the longside of the table and the two gentlemen on the opposide side, that could be possible right? Because they would probably want so sit and look at her the both of them.
And then you'll seat Lennart Håvi and myself at the other table and I will sit with my back against Garbo and Lennart Håvi will sit with his camera pointed in Garbo's direction. But we will hide the camera with a newspaper. And when we feel that Garbo should be photographed then Lennart would give a sign with his hand and I would lift the newspaper so the photo could be taken. 2:16
Didn't Garbo notice anything? No, she was so enaged in conversation with the other two gentlemen and they talked so loudly all three of them, and Garbo laughed so often. We never lifted the newspaper more than a decimeter above the table since the camera was on the table. And when Lennart wanted to take the photograph, that was when I moved over a bit to let Lennart have a clear view to take the photograph.
3:13 And then I just casually moved back after I heard the camera click. We did that very easily and nobody noticed anything
3:50 This photograph is taken by Greta Garbo. We see Sven Broman together with his wife Siv close to Klosters in Switzerland where they first got to know Garbo.
4:05 Did you have any idea of how you would approach Garbo? No, I didn't. We checked into the hotel where she stayed (that we knew) and then we wanted to see her. We were simply curious. Then it was a bit of a coincidence that she came every year to this hotel with an american couple, the man in the couple fell ill and the wife had to stay with him so Garbo was left alone. So this was our chance to approach her. We had rented a car so we could offer her to come along on our trip around in the alps.
5:10 The first meet, how did that happen? First I approached her at the table where she was eating, said hello, and asked if I should send my regards back home to Sweden. Oh, Garbo replied. Are you Swedish? That's how it started.
5:33 Eventually you got invited tom Garbo's home in New York. Yes, we were visiting New York and we had let Garbo know this beforehand. Then Garbo called our hotel after we arrived and invited us. She said to us that "nobody comes here". I had a feeling that the invitation to her home was a thank you for letting her accompany us during the trip in the alps. I was very nervous before the visit and brought 15 yellow roses and arrive exactly at the scheduled time. And it was obvious that we were expected since her doorman welcomed us (I thought he would tell us to go away when we said we are here to see Greta Garbo). But we entered her home and we had a very pleasant time at Garbo's. "And here nobody has been" she said many time during our stay.
6:44 Can you describe how it looked in Garbo's home?
Yes, we were most of the time seated in here big common room, where she practically had all the walls filled with art and also book shelves with classical litterature. I Looked around at the books and mentioned that "those I haven't read". These were nice book from England and so on. About the art she had mentioned a bit earlier. She asked me a bit of a tricky question: "Has Mr. Broman read Truman Capote?", and I understood exactly what she referred to. Truman Capote had written an essay that Garbo didn't have any better understanding of art than that she had turned a Picasso upside down. I have never owned a Picasso, she replied and Capote has never visited my home.
7:44 I got her phone number to be able to message her about something in Sweden. I'm not sure how many times she mentioned how unusual it was that somebody got her phone number.
8:00 But Garbo lived quite a lot "in her phone" I understood. She didn't meet many people in private but every day she had contact with a few of her friends in America for example. And I was a link to her in Sweden.
8:27 Well, hello! It's from Sweden. Oh, Mr. Broman.I just wanted to say that I got so surprised this morning when I turned on the radio. What did it say? No, on the radio. They mentioned that the king had said during a press conference in New York the he and the queen had met you. Well it was so brief, and so unexpected. They have been after me all this time. Yes, I heard this last autumn but I haven't heard anything after that.
9:10 I received a telegram from the royal palace (in Sweden). They wanted to know if I could attend some event. Then I asked my niece to call that man at the royal palace and tell him that i cannot commit to anything like that and then I thought that would be the end. But there is this lady who sets everything up for them. And here I don't know very well. And she was quite persistant. There was no escaping her (Garbo says laughingly).
9:56 And she wrote a letter, that she sent with her hand I was about to say. (My guess is that Garbo thinks of the common English phrase "by hand" in Swedish which would translate to "with the hand". In the Swedish language the phrase "by hand" doesn't really exist.)
10:04 And she hasn't got my phone number so she probably sent a letter with her driver and said that they would be so happy if she could come. Then I thought to myself, "Oh, goodness. I guess I will have to put on a pair of shoes and go". So I did that.
10:20 I think they were overjoyed about that.Because this was probably the best that they could... They didn't seem overjoyed. Really? But the queen must have been nice?<
Oh, she is so beautiful! So very beautiful. I couldn't believe she was so beautiful. And intelligent. Yes, for sure.
10:56 And the king, he is a bit shy isn't he? No, he was very sweet. it was so brief the whole thing. I was so nervous when I had told them I was coming.I had seen in the newspaper that their schedule was very tight. I thought that they might change their minds. So I tried to get a hold of that lady and let her know that if it was too much of a difficulty to meet then we should cancel. But I wasn't able to reach her.
11:31 So this was in the morning? Yes, in the morning. Then they went down to some lake and stayed there for the rest of the day. It was some event they had arranged. It can't be very easy for them. No, I guess they are travelling around in many different cities. Yes, that is tough. But they are young.
12:02 But for them, and for us all as well you are.. I mean, this was a meeting between two queens, as I said to my wife. Well, she is the real one, "the real deal". She is the real queen. Come to think of it I hava met the kings father and his grandfather. Oh, did you meet his father who was killed in a plane crash? Oh, yes. But I didn't know him. But he was a handsome man prince Gustaf Adolf, Broman says.
Very handsome, extraordinarily handsome. But I didn't know him. So now it is the third generation... I feel extremely old. No.. Now it's only their children left.Yes, and they are very sweet. Yes, they are.
13:07 And I didn't remove my black glasses. I thought about that afterwards. They don't know how I look without them, they wouldn't recognize me.
13:21 What kind of beautiful clothes did you have on then? Nothing, I was naked. Oh, haha. Well, I never go out. I don't have any clothes. But it still went okay.
13:38 Greta Garbo is one of the most genuine person I have ever met. There wasn't an ounce of ""fakeness" about her. She was completely upfront. And this was combined with an immediate humour which she often showed. Even at times when she was feeling sad or ill she could suddenly tell a funny story or something similar.
14:10 I think about all the B-level celebrities one have met during ones life that doesn't even take a natural breath, and then you met Greta Garbo who is just so natural.

Жаль что Грета Гарбо не оставила свой голос на качественной записи за последние пол века. Приходится слушать эту плохую телефонную связь. Во всяком случае - это лучше, чем ничего. Спасибо! И голос её прекрасный!
