      Well, it may well understand, at least the meaning behind the sound, as well as the associated body language.
      But cats are contrary, and in this case, I reckon the cat has worked out that that area is for communication, and is seeing if it can communicate with the human on the cat's terms, not the human's.
      It's almost saying "I shouldn't need to press a damn button. They're making you stupid. Everything I'm doing should tell you what I'm asking, it's just you're not paying attention to anything but the buttons, silly monkey."
      And yes, I'm probably overthinking it, but I care not 🤣

      @@HunnyBee23 Ignorant is a strong word, especially because of its connotations. Be careful with your word choices or people will think you're rude and "ignorant" of social behaviour. I think being ignorant of a particular pet owner on the internet and their specific word buttons is much better than being ignorant of how to behave in a civil manner in society. Try reworking your sentence to be reasonable and you will get much farther (in life in general). Now after all that, if you look at the original comment, first of all it was easy to tell that it was well meaning (that's the effect of lol) and that the sentence was more about not understanding the cat rather than the buttons. The buttons joke was referencing BilliSpeaks (RIP) and her mad button.

Dogs might be able to train humans with these buttons, but cats? dont care to train humans. they've already done it at least twice in recorded human history. Yes, we are trained by cats, and dogs are trained by us. so dogs, conversely, can train us better than cats will with these weird speech buttons, because they can't live without us but cat's are fine without humans. they train us, we train dogs.

      Communication happens in many ways and it’s easy to miss it sometimes! We’re all animals, doing our best to sift through stimulus, bias, and so much more constantly. True communication isn’t about immediate understanding, but the ability to get to the common ground. They got there; she was listening ❤

    I feel like she communicated exactly what she needed to and you were just so busy trying to force her to use your overly diverse communication tools for a language that is unrelated to them. Instead of paying attention to what she's actually trying to tell you. My cats will point to what they want or lead me to what they want. I'm not saying it's not cool that we can teach them to use this but I'm also saying like pay attention to their body language also

    The multiple studies with apes and monkeys during the 70s until the 90s taught us that humans are very good at cognitive dissidence. Researchers and animal handlers tricked themselves as to what level, the animals were truly able to communicate.
    In the studies no one fluent in ASL could understand the animals that had been raised since birth using a bastardized version of ASL. Their handlers would insist they could communicate through ASL and just had to parse through all the animals frustration “as not being understood quickly enough”. Those fluent in ASL watching would say the animals (chimps and apes alike) were brute forcing hand movements until they got what was offered.
    While the researchers with claim that each and every wave of the hand, was a “word”.

    • @BastianAndbrews
      @BastianAndbrews  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You’re misrepresenting the research and I’m not sure if it’s because you truly don’t understand it, or if it’s a case of confirmation bias. Either way I implore you to look a bit deeper. Perhaps read the literature review published earlier this year about the buttons with Rossani, Levenson, and Bastos

    • @Kebabbling
      @Kebabbling 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Based off the bit of research you paraphrased (from the 70’s through 90’s.. we’re about to be in 2024) - would this not be a great example as to the associations animals can create with space awareness and movement? How far off is it for an animal to hit an associated button from a wave or tap? I’m playing devil’s advocate that animals do not truly understand words and therefore do not truly communicate with buttons to make this argument.
      I believe animals understand us and can communicate in their own ways. I believe in AIC and “the buttons”, as humans use similar communication devices and techniques. I believe that animals are like small children and build their “language” similarly, though word association.
      I’m not some higher power with all the answers, but we sure as hell won’t find out being skeptical and denying various valid research so long as it doesn’t fit the narrative that animals are simple and stupid, and therefore incapable of basic feelings like anger, hurt, and happiness.
